The Keeper: Stephen Jones and his 1966 Porsche 912
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Automobiles, particularly those of the vintage and classic variety, are far more than four-wheeled conveyances for simply getting us around. Hang out around them long enough, and the right car can morph into something approaching a friend and companion that we share adventures and the ups and downs of life with. They can mirror our human interactions, sometimes passing in and out of our lives for a brief period, never to be seen again. And other times they become something undeniably intrinsic and important to our lives. Car enthusiasts use the word “soul” pretty often to describe a car that resonates with them. It may seem a stretch for someone who is not into cars, but it’s an undeniable sentiment for folks that are passionate about automobiles.
Stephen Jones has had his 1966 912 since 1973, and it’s safe to say that he and the Porsche have become an inseparable duo over the years. Over the decades that he was alternately either flying in the military or working as a airline pilot, his 912 has remained a constant, which was certainly no accident.

I've had my 68 912 Targa since 1970 and never looked back. It was my daily driver and commuter car until I retired in 2000 and then it became a garage queen until two years ago when It went back into daily use. I never once even considered selling it. It's been painted twice, the engine has been rebuilt twice and the interior redone once. It still gets thumbs-up virtually every time I drive it.
I never get tired of these stories about classic cars and the owners that love them. Beautiful Porsche.

Utterly MAGNIFICENT!! Porsche perfection in green!!
Steven has been a great caretaker of that old gal! The color is gorgeous and she purrs beautifully! That German painter did an awesome job!
The most iconic body style of all time. Beautiful.
That is my absolute dream car 😍 I’d have it exactly as it is here, same colour I love everything about it. So cool.
The 912 looks absolutely awesome in British racing green.
Lovely car. I sold my '69 912 in the late 1990s in L.A. when it couldn't pass smog. Had the car for 18 years and drove it cross country without a hitch. If I could find it I'd probably buy it back.

I still have my 912. I have had it for 52 years. It sat in the garage for a few years until it was too old to have the smog test requirement.
My personal favourite Porsche model nice and simple.
Wow, I love everything about this video! Beautiful car and a passionate, dedicated owner combined with incredible filmmaking make it really fun to watch.

about the same time, I had a 911... wish I could have kept it...
In the mid to late Sixties, our high school chemistry teacher drove a 1958 powder-blue 356, which he then traded for a red 1965 912. Our Friday afternoon class often turned into car-talk sessions where he would often come down on Detroit Iron. When he eventually married the biology teacher (I’m not making this up!), he traded in his Porsche for a new 1968 Camaro with a 3 speed auto tranny! Ever the gentleman, he let us give him eat his words!
Beautiful color.
Great story and beautiful car. I purchased a beautiful '69 912 in 2008, 2 years after earning my Naval Aviator wings in Pensacola, FL. Many great memories in the 912 but regrettably, I let it go, not realizing that the challenge of maintaining a vintage car while moving every few years in the military was a small price to pay for the experience of classic Porsche ownership. Hindsight is 20/20. I now enjoy a 2011 Porsche Racing Green Cayman.

In 1974 I had a '67 912 for a short time, it got about 40 miles per gallon. Prior to the 912, I had a 914 which caught fire, I used the insurance money to buy the 912 but the seller ripped me off. The front end of the 912 was rusted, he stuffed newspapers around the frame and undercoated it. It was my bad for not getting the car inspected before buying it but I was young and naïve. For the short time I had the car, it was fun to drive and I wish I still owned it.
Cool Car & Great Job Zach Mayne
My first car was an identical Irish Green 1967 912. Drove it for a decade in my 20s. Always regret selling it.
Absolutely beautiful little car. Nice to see it in the hands of such a caring owner.
Absolutely stunning.
Thank you for letting me to see this car again, this is the same model my high school math teacher used to drive 33 years ago. He kept the car very clean.

One of the happiest moments of my life, getting one. The next happiest moment, selling it.
Just enough upgrades to keep it close to original. Nice to listen to someone who loves his car, not for the money it’s worth, but for the joy it gives. Great car, and video. Thanks, RickGTI

I have always loved the handling of 912s and am very happy that this one found the right owner.
Beautiful car and Ferdinand Porsche’s favourite colour. Lovely video thanks for sharing your experiences, greetings from the 🇬🇧 .
Beautiful green machine 👌 I see you drove 747’s before I assume. Speaking about “keeping the momentum”, that’s necessary in the same way when turning tight corners. 👍
has a great stance
Love the green

Excellent video on this '66 912!!!! And my ole home New Mexico to boot!!!
Beautiful car! In one respect I have you beat. I have had my 1969 912 for 52 years. I too purchased my car in the Bay Area. I made the plunge in 1971, not long after I got out of the AIr Force and went to work for Western Airlines. My 912 was my daily driver for decades. Unfortunately, mine is not in anywhere near the same condition as yours. It sits in the garage next to my 2007 997.1 Turbo, a recent acquisition. My 912 has about 212,000 miles on the clock with the original engine and transmission. Perhaps I will start a renovation project of my own. I love that car, even if is is not as fast, nor will it hold the road the way my Turbo does. Thanks for sharing.
Cool film, enjoyed watching it and happy to see such people as him loving and driving those cars.
Beautiful story and a beautiful car! Thank you!
Very good!
Very nice relationship between a car and the owner👍
Man great story love the car a story of ones life
Just a lovely film. So enjoyable to watch and listen. Cheers Zach!
The tiny neighborhood Mr. Jones lives in (my father does as well) has a disproportionately large number of beautiful vintage Porsches.
A beautiful partnership Stephen and a great testament to good men. Thanks Retromod for the inspiring video.
Nice to see such loyalty to a beloved car
What a gem! 👍
Just for a second, when he backed out the garage, though he was going to hitch it up to the trailer!!
Great little car. Beautiful example of the classics 912. Oh, how I miss my little 68 912. My biggest mistake was selling my 912 as my family grew. Your 100% correct. It handles the curves better than a 911. Congratulations!

Hey Steven, often wondered where you got off to. I have vivid recollections of you & I joining the Navy together at NAS Alameda on February 10, 1970. I think we must have driven up to Alameda together in my Karmann Gaia cabriolet, before I purchased my 1955 Porsche Continental Coupe that I drove down to Pensacola...
What a great story,Thank you for sharing

Loved this!
classic love story of man and machine. He enjoys it for exactly what it is, not what it could be or isn't. This story has nothing to do with going 200 mph or 0-60 in 2.3 seconds, yet find another guy who appreciates and enjoys his car as much as he does.
I love the video, what a history, an honest explanation what the car is and how well it has been maintained. These are the type of car and owner that I love to follow on KZread.

Well done and gorgeous car
I remember those Moffet field planes flying over my grandparents house in Mountain View in the 70’s all day long. The story was they were sub chasers doing routes over the coastal waters and back, sometimes doing touch and go’s, then back out again. The things kids make up to explain stuff they know nothing about. 👍
Lovely video, it ticks all the boxes. Thx

I had that exact car. It had dealer installed factory air conditioning a five speed and about 70k on the clock. I bought it in 1990 from the original owner. Foolishly traded it in on a truck in 1996. I miss it terribly!
Another awesome film, Zach! Loved it!

I’m not a petrol head but this car is beautiful ! Great story.
Excellent tale.
Just a beautiful car.
What a beautiful car! Glad your keeping it alive.
You're a lucky man Stephen. When Porsche designed this shape, they didn't put a line wrong. In my view, all of its subsequent iterations took the car further and further away from that original timeless design. It's hard to believe that this classic is over 55 years old - it still looks as fresh as a daisy. I can fully understand your love affair with the 912.. I'm sure it's the best $2500 you've ever spent!
We have a 1987 targa Carrera. Lowered a bit, chipped and SSI heat exchangers. Sweet car!

Sensacional que carro fantástico e o som do motor parece que foi fabricado esse ano, congratulations
This car s so beautiful
Growing up, I always wanted a Porsche. Any other brand of car just wasn't even close to the mark. Until I saw the price tag and then I thought "I don't want one THAT badly". I'd rather have 10 really nice motorbikes in my garage.
I miss my bahama yellow 1968 912…my eldest son rode in the jump seat for about a year till it had to go. Traded for a 1973 volvo.
Great little documentary. Really interesting to hear about the real experience relative to the 911.
very nice.

Beautiful car. I bought my 1967 912 right after college. I’ve had it for 17yrs now. Bought it When they were still very cheap. Funny- it’s had a some similarities to your car. It was originally from a Vietnam area pilot, It has spent a lot of time at my parents garage while I moved to different countries. I needs a lot of work- but it has some LN Nickies, wooden steering wheel waiting for it when I return home. Unfortunately- it is not Irish green.
bless you and thank you for your service
