    This movie goes to show you that studio execs (for the most part) don’t have a single clue about what they’re doing . Can you imagine what the Michael Mann complete 3-hour edit would look like? This film is a underrated classic, Mann’s version would’ve made The Keep into one of the pre-eminent films of its era.

    One of the most effective aspects of Molasar's design I think is that you don't really know what he is, or whether he is truly evil or not, until very late in the film, this film is a truly overlooked great, and worth KEEPing in mind.

    What I actually preferred in the movie, is the change about the main monstrosity. In the book he was once a man, who became avatar of Chaos, why Glaeken became avatar of Order/Light. It's kinda cliche. In the movie Mann made him this prehistoric, evil being of unknown origin. It's more lovecraftian and scary.

It was kinda Stephen King level of fucking up the story by including some dumb campy origin story. In the book they made him some human who achieved power of Dark side of cosmic force xD while in the movie they simply went with that demon/dark god vibes.

    I admit that I paid my $1.50 and sat in the theater watching this movie when it was first released, and I hated it. But, that hate has changed over the years. And I must admit that “The Keep” is truly an underrated, unappreciated & quite overlooked horror/thriller gem! I’m pushing 60, and have be a horror fan for as long as I can remember. In fact, the first movie I remember watching in a movie theater was the original Universal Studio’s “Frankenstein” & “Bride Of Frankenstein” double billing. I was about 5 at the time, and thought then as I still think, the Creation was beautiful, and I cried for him. I know you’re thinking that my memory has nothing to do with “The Keep”. And, you would be correct! But, it explains how long I have been watching & enjoying horror movies. I’ve seen masterpieces like John Carpenter’s “Halloween”, and stinkers like 1975’s “Bug”, which is one of those “SO BAD IT’S GOOD” movies. As for “The Keep”, I believe that this movie deserves complete restoration & a collectors edition release! Because, there are enough fans available to make the cost worth it!

    Brilliant idea best chance is probably an anchor Bay for this type of special release. Other than the demand for a longer version I've had for 30 years. Also a NightBreed fan and if you look at process to get to the director's cut there you'll find the quality would not be up to specifications for Criterion. As the longer cut is probably a very low quality vs the master and not protected from natural emulsion degradation. as far as I know Michael mann still does not want to talk about the film so that's a big hurdle.

  • @sebastianfitzptraick7395

    @sebastianfitzptraick7395

    The director's cut will probably never see the light of day, it all depends on whether the deleted footage is still in the vault and if Mann becomes interested. Hell, it hasn't even been released on even DVD yet. Although I love the idea of a directors cut, it's unlikely it'll ever happen in Mann's lifetime if the footage still exists.

    @@chadsknnr The keep are the walls a man builds around the power\darkness he knows is within his heart. A darkness he knows can't get out into the world but is also made of the world. The Nazis in the movie release this power finding it because they were looking for it themselves. From a man's perspective, the evil they bring into the world justifies releasing this power that will destroy everything it touches. When the creature takes the cross in hand and crushes it, it shows how meaningless the symbols of religion are to such power\darkness. The travler that ultimately drags the creature back behind the walls is the representation of the good in man's heart which is the only thing that can contain the darkness. But in doing so that good\light must locked behind the walls as well to contain the darkness. It so happens though the movie never showed it this man epresentation of good, was released when the creature\ representation of evil was released as well. Yin and yang. It's been awhile since I watched this movie. But I believe the Nazi Commander and the other guy are the physical representations of the battle one man is having. Does he embrace darkness or the light? Thiis is the battle taking place in his own heart. this is my own opinion and I haven't explained it very well but I believe this is what's going on.

To deny there was any inspiration is to admit they stole it instead. You cant make something that looks 75-80% identical and then deny it. Many of the survival horror devs drew inspiration from 80s horror films. Go watch Hellraiser for blatant Silent Hill inspiration. Its undeniable.

    Unfortunately that was due to the death of Wally Veevers the SFX Guy, before He completed the effects. Mann personally finished them , but admitted He had no idea what Veevers had in mind in some cases or planned to do for the finishing touches to the parts He had started.

Movies in 2019 had boring demons too, I just think people’s imaginations haven’t improved in the span time between that movie to now. I have seen some movies that left more to the imagination (low budget) and that came across more frightening but overall nothing is too scary. If we look at things human beings can become a lot of that makes demons, monsters and aliens from the entire horror, sci-fi genre seem negligible.

There is additional footage, it was transmitted once when broadcast on Canadian TV but has never been see since. It's crying out for a bluray with special features. It's a great film but horribly disjointed and confusing, largely because so much was cut from it. It's virtually incomprehensible unless you've read the book - The Keep by F. Paul Wilson (which is a terrific book by the way). Wilson has disassociated himself from the film. It's got great imagery and music by Tangerine Dream though

    Did i just watch Darkseid and Gandalf have a argument, Darkseid then be defeated by a man with a staff that shoots lasers, and then said laser staff man gets sucked up into light?.....Just making sure...
