Oh god am i embarrassed... My Kata was the first and i did so horrible 😂 At the time i recorded this, i was everything but confident with the Kata (which showed off in the first moves). Thank you anyway Sensei. I will try to aplicate all the things you said, especially the stances. Maybe someday i will figure this Kata out :) Ozz

Jesse is correct. In all honesty, you shouldn't be attempting that Kata at your current level it won't serve you well later. In many Shotokan schools, unsu is classed as a 4th Dan Kata. Concentrate on the heian katas, that's what they're there for, to prepare you for those advanced Kata. Good effort though.

I love your take. I was a karateka at first and started training in grappling a few years into my journey. I have judged numerous karate kata competitions. My 3 areas that I look at are 1) Feet. Are the stances solid. As a grappler there is no faking a solid footing. In striking it is the same. Stance is the foundation for everything. 2) Are the blocks, punches and kicks delivered with proper technique. That is are they sound or just fast. I. e. are the elbows not chicken winged and punches and kicks controlled and not reaching. 3) Is there a reasonable amount of intent in the techniques. Karate kata is not a dance recital. I don't deduct points if it looks like the person is enjoying themselves, but I think the kata movements should be done with deliberate intent/ focus. Blocks should be done as if the person is under attack, and strikes etc should look like they would cause damage, not chasing flys.

Kata is about continuous improvement of one's self. Nobody ever truly masters a kata. The point of the practice of it is to try to constantly improve. Case in point: my favorite kata is Gankaku. Some of you may know it as Chinto or Jindo, depending on your style. My sensei taught it to me in 1985, shortly after I attained Shodan rank. Fast forward almost 35 years, I still mess up and lose balance sometimes. It's not a technically difficult kata to learn, but it's an extremely difficult kata to perform correctly. Maybe in another thirty years I will have it! The true beauty of kata is that it can continue to be practiced regardless of age. Keep moving forward!

To further advance your concept, include computer graphics and before and after videos. Jesse ...Congratulations on a new venture in your expanding emporium of vital knowledge on the Art of Karate. In which the aspect of the Kata, is the fundamental building block of the "ART of Karate". This and all "kata's" are to be respected & appreciated for what it returns to the individual practitioner; development of the basics in order to build a superior base from which to learn and apply the more advanced moves of the style of karate that you wish to study & learn. You are to be commended in your most humble approach, neither criticizing but encouraging thru your many years of study with a simple explanations of the theory & techniques involved. Karate and Taekwondo poomse . we look at the same things. power from the core not just arms, center of balance, strong consistent stances , timing of upper and lower body. I practice Taekwondo hapkido but I try to learn from all with open mind. Learning martial arts is like climbing a big mountain. at the bottom each path seems so far apart and different. Jesse san. The second kata where you say to "connect" lower and upper body. That is Matsubayashi Ryu. He is performing it correctly as there is a delay between stance and technique to generate big time koshi. This was taught by Nagamine O sensei, Nagamine Takayoshi, Shinzato sensei, Makishi sensei. And by my Sensei. I actually practice this style and have for decades. I do see small things but that happens to us all. A really good Tomari Chinto.

Great idea, The Kata Critic; thanks for it Jesse!! With the first Kata, Unsu, executed by an Orange Belt, I would've deterred him from doing Kata that is way far superior than his level of knowledge and understanding. Why?? Bad habits will be there, and the bad muscle memory will be way to stubborn to retrain, if at all. Our Soke and Dai-Soke would've killed us if we had executed a Kata that we're not mature enough to honor said Kata!! Please understand that I'm not wanting to tear this orange belt down, but the opposite, to build him up!! Proof is on the floor, and the floor is an uncaring witness!! Rika Usami is a fantastic model for many Karateka to observe how a Kata is interpreted across a wide spectrum!! Great input across the board, Jesse; thank you!!

Might just be a difference in styles but i was taught for the opening moves to not turn my head forward until the hands come back down in the opening 3 sequences. Another thing which we're taught is what's called the "Goju exchange" when stepping straight back keep your hips facing forward until the last possible moment then snap into the horse stance forcing your hips to contract which adds power. I find it helps immensely with keeping those step backs straight too Great katas everyone! Keep training!!

@@therolentless well to put it simply, competition is about putting on a show so you have to, have a very flashy Kata, give the illusion of power and speed meanwhile traditionally your kata is meant to help build your muscle memory and train you to be practical hence bunakai is an important aspect of Karate as it helps you understand your Kata better and picture a real fight, it's hard to switch from Competition to traditional and back again but both are helpful in understanding how a Kata can be adapted for a certain situation, cause a kata needs to be adaptable for a specific person and the situation you in be it a drill exercise, performance, or a fight

Esteban Outeiral Dias they aren’t judging his choice in fashion. It’s important to learn and master the basics before moving on to very advanced techniques and katas. They will look sloppy and awakward. And in the end, you’ll struggle more on learning how to do things rather learning how to use them powerfully and efficiently

I have heard that some argue for the low half proceeding the upper due to kenetic linking. Sort of rubber banding the punch for additional power. Or course the boxing legend Dempsy would say to step with the punch gaining power from gravity in stepping with the punch.

@@KARATEbyJesse I'm currently contemplating different forms of power generation. So far I am aware of 4. 1. Kenetic linking from force exerted on the ground. (For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, power you push down into the larger mass of the Earth is translated back into the body. Sort of pushing with the legs into strikes) 2. Elastic tension on connective tissue ( using tension of the body and release of tension) 3. Force of gravity with strike (where the weight of the body is added to form.) 4. Centrifugal force (spinning mass of body to build power and release it at the point of strike.) I have not included the power of muscle fiber twitch but should be considered, however this may often depend on conditioning rather than technique for power generation. Your thoughts?

Enpi is another one that is deceptively easy, but incredibly nuanced. And most karateka don't do it correctly. In most styles it's an introductory level black belt kata. In my opinion of the typical sentei (selection kata) typically Bassai Dai, Enpi, Kwanku and Jion, Enpi is the hardest one of those four. Enpi contains movements which are very unnatural. It's a Shorin form, but most students perform it like it's a Shorei form.

That’s very interesting, I train shotokan and (in my club) generally we treat those kata (bassai dai, jion, enpi and kanku dai) as prerequisites to shodan. Although only bassai dai is required for our shodan grading, my senseis prefer for us to know all four before grading for shodan. It’s cool to here about the shorin version.

@@CwGuitar01 It varies from dojo to dojo. Keep in mind, all Shotokan kata are derived from Shorin Ryu and Shorei Ryu. The Heian katas, Bassai, Kwanku, Enpi and Gankaku come from Shorin Ryu. Hangetsu, Jion, Jitte, and the Tekki kata come from Shorei Ryu. In my dojo, my sensei taught us the sentei kata he felt suited us best. We learned it at brown belt and had to do it for our Shodan exam. I did Bassai Dai for my Shodan test. For Nidan, I had to demonstrate Enpi, Kwanku and Jion and show an improvement in my execution of Bassai Dai.

8:55 That take is very interesting. I learned from Sensei Richard Amos that upper body and lower body should move as one entity, connected through the core, which you also mentioned. As of recently I'm training at a university Karate club and I have a little argument with my senpai who trains us. She learned to start a technique after starting the legs. You said you start it even before the legs. Doesn't this go against the principle of moving everything together, as you said afterwards?
