The Joys of Researching Tanks.

This actually went up on the WoT Console channel a couple of years ago, but it seems not too many people go there. So, re-posting here. Although this primarily refers to World of Tanks, the problems inherent in research applies to basically any game or even scale modelling.
Since this video was made, the priorities in game design and balance may have changed.
The address for that bookstore, by the way.

Glad you had the qualifier in there about the operator manuals. don't know about then but in the 90's I was an instructor at Ft Gordon, we had new equipment coming out. We were given copies of the proposed Technical Manual to review, and promptly found all sorts of errors between what the manual said and what existed in the equipment. Dimensions, weights, all sorts of things. We wrote detailed critiques which were promptly ignored ... hope things were better back then.

I'm gonna make an unpopular statement, and stress the importance of archived information like effects of mold on 2.5 ton trucks in the Pacific theater for the long term storage and readiness of equipment, like the storing of equipment in Norway or other locations in the event of large scale war. Not interesting or relevant to war gaming, but interesting and relevant to real world.

The thing is, Wargaming has introduced the main battle tank 70 in WoT, all information is available, for example, that the tank reaches about 60 kmh with 1500 hp, so really really fast, BUT he only reaches 50 kmh has only 800 hp and reaches the 55 kmh once every 5 battles. In short, all the information was there, but it makes the tank worse even though it is underbalanced, but why...

Nicholas, thanks for posting your video, great stuff. I have a few questions: 1. I came across of some of whole bunch of your bootlegged videos in other language of you reviewing WWII fighters like P-51, P-38 and ect. Can you point me in a detection of where you have them. I tried to poke around this channel with "no joy"... 2. I do have interest in WWII aviation as much as in tanks, but for the life of me I can't find CREDIBLE statistics on Causalities and Victories, or perhaps sorties flown of WWII broken down by countries and aircraft type. For Example I know that P-51 shut down around 5000 German aircraft, while for a loss of 3000 P-51, and ect. It is interesting for me to compare where was more German fighter losses in the Easter front or Western front, in perspective of how many Soviets aircraft losses. The reason is that lately a lots of Russians trying to diminish Allies contribution into defeating Hitler in WWII prior operation Overlord.(I know, its not a novel debate, but never the less very interesting subject). BTW any input from anybody greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Of all tank simulators I've played only two: 1) old 1980s "Abrams Tank" (I guess, that was the name), it's pretty much unplayable now, as the speed of the game was tight not to the timer, but to the clock speed of the processor, imagine the difference of speed of 286 processor and modern multicore CPU - when you try to traverse a turret, it spins like a propeller on a helicopter. Thus the only was is to use special software to emulate old PC or throttle your processor several hundreds of times down in speed. 2) T-72 "Balkans on Fire" Anyway, even there games were sort of arcades, still games, I'm not a big fan or real simulators.

I can agree with the fun to a game... World of tanks is more of a fun arcade shooter than full on simulation. Moving over to War Thunder, I learnt that the hard way. In world of tanks, traverse speeds as well as track speeds are all enhanced so you can rush in at speed and play it almost like an FPS. Moving over to realistic battles in War Thunder though and I spent the first several hours of gameplay dying a lot. Rush in in world of tanks and you can often win. Rush in with War Thunder and its likely that you get sniped from over a kilometer away as unlike world of tanks where enemies can be hidden only a hundred or so meters away until they're detected, with war thunder, it's pure line of sight. Doesn't matter if the tank is 3 kilometers away... If there is no intervening terrain, you will be seen. All that in mind, War thunder is a nice in-between game between the arcade of World of Tanks and the pure simulation of Steel Beasts.

Has anyone bothered to try and organize and/or file the archives? Like every time they bring somebody a box that has not been checked out in a long time, they respectfully ask you to record subject matter of the items you find? Like you get a new box and as you rummage through it you have a little note card so you can record for the archivist that Box 23A has a post test report for the M3 37mm, the specs for an M1 helmet, a detailed nutrition breakdown for a D-ration chocolate bar and a requisition form from the supply officer of the 4th ID asking for more pencils. Has anyone tried doing anything like that?

However, he has chosen a very obvious piece of cover" *boom* ... *BOOM* ... "CUT! Will someone go get Mister Nisbit, let's get this bloody scene done..."

I do not play this particular game, but very much love how this Major (retired) has so accurately identified so many of the so-called "grognards"...the self-proclaimed "experts" who have never been closer to a battlefield environment than the dark environs of an air conditioned movie house. Have been involved in wargaming since 1960, in one form or another, and have helped research for many games, by some great people who did not know where to look. Have learned so much from this series in the "Chieftain's Hatch".. Thank you so much. (2/503rd, Ranger, U.S.Army...Info analyst.)etc, blah, blah, blah.

i had an "encyclopedia of german tanks and armor vehicles" that was published in late 50s early 60s? it was written in english with german titles on the photographs. i bought it late 60s very early 70s but it included Everything the germans built, designed or proposed during the war. i believe there was a proposed Porsche design of a concept T-34 copy.

I've always noticed The Chieftain makes mention of the Archives. Does he mean the National Archives? Or they have an in-house thing going on, I'd really like access to it and do research on my own.

Yes, the National Archives, mainly in College Park, Md. There is a WG collected archive as well, but I tend not to use it as it’s mainly in languages I don’t speak.
