As a coloured South African who travels alot, it's definitely a very tricky subject to navigate and I'm not even famous. So I get the hesitation from Tyla to address it on the breakfast club but it is also important since she has the platform to educate. From what I can tell the statement still confuses people a little. Coloured people are not considered black in SA. We are not biracial either. Trevor Noah for example is biracial, since his parents are of two different races. Coloureds are multiracial. My parents, grandparents and everyone before that, are coloured. We are a distinct racial group separate from black and white due to colonisation from Europe and migrations from the middle East and Asia. Our heritage consists of native South african cultures mixed with a variety of other cultures from years ago. Those mixed people continued to mix over several generations resulting in our own race and culture with diverse skin tones, hair textures and eye colours. We don't have the same traditions and don't speak the same languages as black people here. In fact, most of us speak afrikaans, which is a derivative of Dutch and no other African languages at all (except English). The accent that Tyla speaks in is a distinct coloured accent. Black people have a different one. When we have to fill out documents for example and they ask for race it's typically: black, white, coloured, and indian. The name is unfortunate but it was given by an apartheid government after all but we have our own heritage and culture that we embrace very passionately. Just classifying us as black in SA would negate the very separate experiences that black and coloured people went through in apartheid. Both awful but in different ways. But we understand that we're black everywhere else and that's fine, but we will never say we're not coloured too. That is what she's saying. Hope this helps anyone else understand. Anyways, Asambe! 💃🏻🇿🇦🙌🏼

@@teddybuckz789 that's kind of my point. We have white passing and black passing people and everything inbetween. So imagine I go to America and call myself black y'all will be like girl stfu. But if I called myself white here in SA they will say the same thing coz they can tell that I'm not white I'm coloured.

@@teddybuckz789 lol I am the most lightskinned in my family sure but would never be classified as white and never have been anywhere else either, usually they think I'm latina but never white. Maybe it's just the picture but anyway that's my point. It's a tricky thing to have to explain all the time coz we come in literally all shades.

This is actually a really good comment that helps me get closer to understanding the cultural interpretations of the term. It would have been amazing if Tyla could have articulated this herself on The Breakfast Club. Instead, she did nothing to further her cause or increase her public presence.

The lesson of “working for it yourself vs fcking up a given thing” has made me grow up and take care of my things I’ve worked for and what’s given to me because I understand it took work to obtain.

The whole take was just ridiculous because of Emmany. Bruce Lee competed and there's evidence. JCVD is a legit fighter, amateur and pro, and was a European and even World Champion before he turned actor. And his personal number 1, Chuck Norris, said that he stood no chance against Bruce in a combat. There is absolutely no one in the MA community that disrespects any of these guys. No idea who he gets his information from to be this disrespectful.
