The Jewish Roots of the Papacy - Dr. Brant Pitre - Deep in History

Find Dr. Pitre's books, talks, and more at www.brantpitre.com
More information also available at catholicproductions.com/colle...
In a talk from The Coming Home Network's 2009 Deep in History conference, Scripture scholar Dr. Brant Pitre looks at the history of Jewish Temple worship, and how the language used by Jesus in establishing Peter as the head of the Church in Matthew 16 draws from those traditions. Dr. Pitre looks at what the power to bind and loose looked like in the Davidic monarchy, what Jesus meant by calling Peter a "rock," the meaning of the "keys to the kingdom," and a lot more.
For more of Dr. Pitre's research on this question, we recommend his book "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper."

@@lukebrasting5108 Better investigate why Jesus took the apostles to Caesarea Philippi and which rock Jesus meant He would build His church on. It was the pagan rock in Caesarea Philippi. The rock where pagan worship took place. A rock where statues of the pagan gods where placed in niches of the rock. Where incensed was burned. The particular rock in Caesarea had an entrance to a cave believed by the pagan worshippers to be the entrance to the underworld. Within that cave was a pool of water and the pagans would sacrifice goats and children to the fertility god Pan. The entrance to the cave was guarded by gates. The gates were referred to as the Gates of Hades. It was upon “THIS ROCK,” the ROCK where paganism was practiced in Caesarea Philippi that Jesus would build His Church and conquer the evils of paganism with the spiritual truth of of the One true God. Matthew 16 has nothing to do with Peter being the “rock.”

@suzannemcmaken4648 Almost correct. He took the Apostles there when he announced Peter would be the Rock. (Cephas in Aramaic meaning Rock)John 1:42 [42]And he led him to Jesus. And Jesus, gazing at him, said: "You are Simon, son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas," (which is translated as Peter). Jesus didn't hand over the keys to a Pagan Rock to guide his flock. That Rock was a Pagan Rock, representing a Pagan Church, and a Pagan God. Jesus was establishing a new Church to teach the New Covenant of the one true God and giving the keys to Peter (in Jewish Tradition the key holder was revered as the guardian) and not hell will prevail against it.

I admire your faith. The "stumbling block" of Jesus is monotheism. At the time of Jesus, no one knew of a Trinity (except for, perhaps, the Hindus), and, to be a Christian, one believes in a Triune God, which , for Jews to this day, is seen as blasphemous. That you overcame that stumbling block is a testament to your faith. May your faith always remain strong.

Roman Catholic Confessions James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of our Fathers, 88th ed., pp. 89. "But you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify." Stephen Keenan, A Doctrinal Catechism 3rd ed., p. 174. "Question: Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept? "Answer: Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her-she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday, the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday, the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority." John Laux, A Course in Religion for Catholic High Schools and Academies (1 936), vol. 1, P. 51. "Some theologians have held that God likewise directly determined the Sunday as the day of worship in the New Law, that He Himself has explicitly substituted the Sunday for the Sabbath. But this theory is now entirely abandoned. It is now commonly held that God simply gave His Church the power to set aside whatever day or days she would deem suitable as Holy Days. The Church chose Sunday, the first day of the week, and in the course of time added other days as holy days." Daniel Ferres, ed., Manual of Christian Doctrine (1916), p.67. "Question: How prove you that the Church hath power to command feasts and holy days? "Answer. By the very act of changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of, and therefore they fondly contradict themselves, by keeping Sunday strictly, and breaking most other feasts commanded by the same Church.' James Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore (1877-1921), in a signed letter. "Is Saturday the seventh day according to the Bible and the Ten Commandments? I answer yes. Is Sunday the first day of the week and did the Church change the seventh day -Saturday - for Sunday, the first day? I answer yes . Did Christ change the day'? I answer no! "Faithfully yours, J. Card. Gibbons" The Catholic Mirror, official publication of James Cardinal Gibbons, Sept. 23, 1893. "The Catholic Church, . . . by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday." Catholic Virginian Oct. 3, 1947, p. 9, art. "To Tell You the Truth." "For example, nowhere in the Bible do we find that Christ or the Apostles ordered that the Sabbath be changed from Saturday to Sunday. We have the commandment of God given to Moses to keep holy the Sabbath day, that is the 7th day of the week, Saturday. Today most Christians keep Sunday because it has been revealed to us by the[Roman Catholic] church outside the Bible." Peter Geiermann, C.S.S.R., The Converts Catechism of Catholic Doctrine (1957), p. 50. "Question: Which is the Sabbath day? "Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day. "Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday? "Answer. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday." Martin J. Scott, Things Catholics Are Asked About (1927),p. 136. "Nowhere in the Bible is it stated that worship should be changed from Saturday to Sunday .... Now the Church ... instituted, by God's authority, Sunday as the day of worship. This same Church, by the same divine authority, taught the doctrine of Purgatory long before the Bible was made. We have, therefore, the same authority for Purgatory as we have for Sunday." Peter R. Kraemer, Catholic Church Extension Society (1975),Chicago, Illinois. "Regarding the change from the observance of the Jewish Sabbath to the Christian Sunday, I wish to draw your attention to the facts: "1) That Protestants, who accept the Bible as the only rule of faith and religion, should by all means go back to the observance of the Sabbath. The fact that they do not, but on the contrary observe the Sunday, stultifies them in the eyes of every thinking man. "2) We Catholics do not accept the Bible as the only rule of faith. Besides the Bible we have the living Church, the authority of the Church, as a rule to guide us. We say, this Church, instituted by Christ to teach and guide man through life, has the right to change the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament and hence, we accept her change of the Sabbath to Sunday. We frankly say, yes, the Church made this change, made this law, as she made many other laws, for instance, the Friday abstinence, the unmarried priesthood, the laws concerning mixed marriages, the regulation of Catholic marriages and a thousand other laws. "It is always somewhat laughable, to see the Protestant churches, in pulpit and legislation, demand the observance of Sunday, of which there is nothing in their Bible." T. Enright, C.S.S.R., in a lecture at Hartford, Kansas, Feb. 18,1884. "I have repeatedly offered $1,000 to anyone who can prove to me from the Bible alone that I am bound to keep Sunday holy. There is no such law in the Bible. It is a law of the holy Catholic Church alone. The Bible says, 'Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.' The Catholic Church says: 'No. By my divine power I abolish the Sabbath day and command you to keep holy the first day of the week.' And lo! The entire civilized world bows down in a reverent obedience to the command of the holy Catholic Church."

Rabbi Akiva was taken out for his transgressions against GOD. He removed books from the cannon at the council of Jamnia, and he organized the early Church to get Judah out of the Holy land! Esau infiltrated the Israelites as a way to get back his blessing. It didn't work however and the frustration still sets in today among the Orthodox Jewish community.

@Asaph Vapor You clearly haven't listened to their talks then, I myself am not a Catholic (yet it would seem because the testimony of scripture seems to be on their side) but for the sake of intellectual honesty and greater understanding I've been listening to what these men have to say. Namely, their argumentation of the old testament being a series of symbols and shadows of the Kingdom of Christ is interesting, we can find types and shadows of all manner of things. Such as Moses being taken from Egypt (the land of sin) then lead to wander through the wilderness and eventually passing through the waters of the red Sea (baptism) and eventually receiving the promised Land (unity with God/Heaven). This same principle applies with David's kingdom and Christ With Christ being the king of David's succession (and a fuller one at that), and Mary being the queen (because the queen within the Davidic context is always the mother of the king, this is found throughout 1&2 Samuel as well as 1&2 Kings). The gatekeeper (who was the king's second in command) holds the keys in the Davidic context and this is Peter. I suggest you take time to learn about this as I have, their argumentation is sound (at least in regards to this topic), but as for the extent of the Pope's powers, I would leave that up to contingency on my end for now. God bless my friend.

I just was making a simple point that you didn't seem to be properly entertaining, I wasn't making any statements on your knowledge of scripture or even my own. I was demonstrating typology in the old testament in case you weren't familiar with it, then connecting it with what they were saying because at first it didn't seem as if you understood this I'm not getting into an extended discussion about this because never have I ever noticed an opinion changed over the internet. Have a wonderful and blessed day my friend. Not saying its wrong but I can see you don't intend on even entertaining this topic

@Patrick Montgomery perhaps I was assuming you were upset, but your use of capitalized letters (as per internet ethicacue) would suggest you were yelling or upset, sorry for suggesting you were, if in fact you were not. Pertaining to Daniel chapter 2, Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar who the head of gold is, he tells him, “ you are this head of gold”. Meaning Babylon, and it would be followed by 3 more kingdoms. Those kingdoms are Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome. The iron legs ( or Rome ), divides into 10, which are the toes of iron and clay. These same 4 kingdoms are represented in chapter 7 as the 4 beasts. And from the last (Rome) comes 10 horns ( same as the 10 toes ), which are kingdoms that arose out of Rome, and then you get the little horn, which is the antichrist. Do some research and see what you come up with, you won’t be disappointed. Pray and ask for guidance in truth, good luck brother.

Catholics say drink of the literal blood of Jesus. Yet BIBLE says do not drink blood. Acts 15, Lev 7:26. 6. Catholics say pray to Mary and "saints". Yet BIBLE says do not contact the dead. Deut 18:11, Isaiah 8:19. 7. Catholics say their statues are not idols. Yet BIBLE says do not bow down to graven images (statues). Deut 4, Exo 20:4-5. 8. Catholics say Holy Water. Yet BIBLE mentions nothing about it. 9. Catholics say Peter was pope. Yet BIBLE says Peter was just a leader of the Jerusalem Church. Gal 2:9, Mat 16:18 10. Catholics say there is a seat of Peter. Yet BIBLE says nothing about it. 11. Catholics say there is a NT clergy priesthood. Yet NT says OT priesthood was done away with. There is no clergy priesthood in NT. Heb 7:27, 9:12, 10:10. 12. Catholics say work for salvation (faith + good works + partake Roman sacraments + believe in roman pontiff + be in roman cult = to be saved). Yet Bible says “believe in Jesus to be saved”. Acts 16:30-31, John 3:16. 13. Catholics says they must do penance to atone for their sins. Yet Bible says repent, confess and sins will be forgiven. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6. 14. Catholics say Mary went straight to heaven without dying. Yet Bible says nothing about it. 15. RCC says Islam and Christianity have the same GOD. Yet Islam doesn't believe in death and resurrection of Jesus and Trinity. 16. RCC says Sunday is the day of worship, just becaise Jesus arose on that day. Yet--The HOLY BIBLE says the SEVENTH DAY IS the ONLY day God rested on, blessed and made Holy.--Gen 2:1- 3, Ex 20:8-11. Roman Catholicism is full of contradiction and anti Scriptures. Nothing is more evil than a catholic disguising as Christianity deceiving many. ------

@Patrick Montgomery Don't cry my dear child!! Indeed, you did call Jesus Christ a false teacher, for Jesus Christ teaches, "Whoever eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood, shall have Eternal life ", ( John 6:54,55), and you tell Jesus, "Not True!!". Indeed, The Flesh of Jesus Christ is True food and Blood True drink, just as Jesus Christ teaches. That is why many of His disciples freely chose to walk away from Him when He revealed this Divine reality, for Jesus Christ is the new Passover Lamb, and the Passover is not complete until the Passover Lamb is consumed, ( Matthew 26:26, 1 Corinthians 5:8, 1 Corinthians 10:16,18, Mark 14:24, Luke 22:19). No one brings condemnation on oneself for consuming a mere symbol in an unworthy manner as Paul warns in Corinthians. You are in my prayers as you journey toward Truth! And he did not even mention other names. And excuse me.... Where is Babylon during that time? When Peter wrote that he was in Babylon you automatically reject the idea that Babylon and Rome were the same. But if the revelation did mention about Babylon you can automatically accept that Babylon and the Catholic Church is the same...

I mean hopefully you're not hete trying to attack, and you're just trying to speak biblical, to show us that Catholicism is false, & not thought in the Bible. I believe that's what you're trying to do here correct?

@UCfu9CRSVQv9Eirxu4RM9mDQ That's funny, because the Bishop of Rome necessarily opposed the Nicolaitans. Read the First Epistle of St. Clement (Philippians 4:3). St. Clement claimed the authority of the Holy Spirit to resolve the crisis at Corinth. This has been held by the Church through all ages.

@Sterling Crowne That's not an argument. Nothing in those verses you cited prohibits offices of dignity in the Church. Nothing. Further, the precedent for adopting pagan titles and offices dates back to Old Testament times: when King David took Jerusalem, he also took the office of priest, just as Melchizedek had been, even though this contradicted the Levitical Law. Similarly, when Christianity conquered Rome, it took the formerly pagan titles as its right of conquest. This is all Biblical. You really need to study.
