That would make an outstanding hunting blind, hammock, A-frame, etc. That pattern looks a lot like the mossy dolomite where I often go north of Toronto. Expensive, but solid-looking.

Did you actually experience that temperature increase, or you are just citing from their site? I wouldn't put my trust in that! I own the Thermo Hunter version, and I can tell you from my own dreadfully chilling experience that you can't go anywhere near that. Stop believing and perpetuating these lies! Put that thing to use, and than review it. I urge you to try using it as a sleeping bag, and even make a video of that. I bet you will run after your summer sleeping bag in less than 5 minutes, and then say it's the warmest piece of gear you've ever owned. For the rest of your viewers I only say this: if such a temperature increase was real, this "reviewer" should have been sweating like hell with that bag on him, or he should have shot that part of the video half naked while wearing that. Get real!

The temperature results were achieved in an independent testing laboratory, in a refrigerated wind tunnel. The published results are available online. Maybe you misunderstood something. As to my own experiences with the Jerven, I have only used it down to about 8 degrees c. When sitting, crouched inside it, I found that after about a minute, I started to feel a noticeable temperature increase, to the point I felt comfortable removing a jacket and being in base layers only. When I slept in it as a sleeping bag (at about 10 degrees C) I felt comfortable. The one major problem is condensation but there are ways to minimise this. As with a sleeping bag, keeping your head/mouth outside of the enclosed bag helps greatly. Your version is lined so that should also help. As to me not sweating in the video, I had been out for a couple of nights so my core temperature was already low and as you can observe in the video I am not moving much. When walking with it fully zipped, it gets very hot, very quickly. Setting it up right is vital to getting the best performance out of it.

I used mine (the Hunter, lined and Primaloft padded version) at about 7°C, completely zipped in, and I wasn't able to sleep because I was too cold, while my summer sleeping bag performed admirably in the same meteorological conditions, wearing the exactly same set of clothes. My point is that those so-called laboratory tests results of these bags being able to provide an increase of 23°C and 29°C from the exterior environment are nothing but lies and false advertisement, and I can testify this based on my own experience in the field. I put my trust in this bag and it failed me when I needed it the most, because I could have never imagined that it would perform so poorly. A 10°C temperature increase was the maximum of what I was able to achieve inside it, and that by sitting cross-legged on top of my backpack. On the other hand, I slept like baby inside my summer sleeping bag, which has a comfort rating of 8°C, with a lower limit of 4°C. And I do sleep hot. However, after wasting a whole lot of money on this item, I got smarter and compared the specs. Summer bag - 100gr/sqm fill, Jerven - 60gr/sqm fill, both synthetic. Voilá. I should add another interesting fact: all commercial sleeping bags have standardized ratings (EN13537), that do not specify the increase of temperature one might experience while inside the bag, but they do provide information regarding the temperatures at which it can be used. Jerven has no such ratings, so it cannot be held responsible for anything, because it doesn’t have to comply with anything. They only brag and lie, while they fail to deliver. What is even worst is that they don't even bother to back their merchandise. I contacted them more than a week ago and exhaustively explained all the details of my experience with their product, and how it failed to meet its specifications, but I haven't received any reply. Even the seller refuses to accept the return, saying that it's "used textile". Of course I used it, that's why I bought it in the first place! All that versatility fades if it cannot be used as a sleeping bag... or maybe it can, on a very hot summer night. Anyway, I appreciate your reply and I'm glad that it works for you. Having your own experience with it, do you honestly still consider it to be the ultimate survival kit? I wonder how it's going to perform in 0°C. According to laboratory tests, one should have a 23°C temperature inside it. If you could only prove in a video that you were able to obtain that...! As to the condensation problem, no, I didn't experience any of that. I was just cold.

Hello. Thanks for your reply, I found it interesting. As to the laboratory conditions - if I remember correctly, the wind tunnel was refrigerated to something like -40C. The fan was then used to add wind chill to produce the final, relative temperature of -80C. This means that as soon as you block the wind, you would be back up to -40C. The Jerven, unarguably, is a total wind block so in terrible weather, that would mean a lot. Lets say the air temperature was +10C, a 50mph wind would produce a wind chill of -17C. Get in the bag, cut out the wind, temperature in the bag goes back up to +10C.If it was -40C with a 50mph wind, relative temperature would be -88C. Cut out the wind, inside bag temperature goes back up to -40C. So that's a 48 Celcius difference. So massive temperature differences really are achievable. I am still unsure as to why you feel you have been misled? The material is also waterproof, also very important. As I'm sure you know, being wet aids cooling incredibly. A sleeping bag loses a large percentage of it insulative value as soon as it gets wet, whether it be goose down, primaloft or synthetic. A sleeping bag simply can not afford you the same level of protection as a Jerven can. In a storm, I would much rather have a Jerven than a sleeping bag, if it was a choice between one or the other. Besides, there's nothing stopping you from using a sleeping bag inside your Jerven. In that respect, it can be thought of more as an highly portable shelter. I still do believe the Jerven to be great piece of kit, it's well made, tough and extremely versatile, so far, have used it as a sleeping bag, a poncho a windblock and as a tarp. Worked well. I look forward to testing mine in more extreme temperatures. I am interested to hear what the company had to say, please let me know. ATB Alex

As already stated, I feel misled because the temperature difference between the exterior environment and the inside of the bag was not even near those 29°C proclaimed by the manufacturer, and no, I didn't climb inside it with my clothes wet. It all looks good in theory, but the practical application was a whole different matter to me, and I felt that on my own skin. The idea of having a rain poncho that could also be used as a sleeping bag and a bivy in a single compact unit is very appealing, but the Jerven Hunter is not up to this job. Having my share of unpleasantness with an insulated Jerven, I must confess I am quite taken aback by the positive experience you had with your bag, which lacks the Primaloft insulation. But, to each his own. I wish you best of luck in your pursuit to using it in colder temperatures. However, I would advise to bring a back-up. Personally, I reached its limits much sooner than I would have wished or expected. I hike on steep mountainous terrain, during multi-day trips, covering at least 10 km of trail a day, avoiding to make any kind of fire, and carrying as less weight as possible. Since I prefer to sleep in the open, I thought that Jerven Hunter would be my ticket to replacing my USGI poncho-tarp and my summer sleeping bag, at least during the summer. According to a plethora of reviews, and to the laboratory and field tests made by Jerven themselves, it seemed to be quite an update to my kit. Everybody spoke so highly of this bag, that I was even considering ditching some of my clothes, although I knew what temperatures to expect. Luckily I didn't, and I was able to survive the night thanks to those clothes. However, my trusty sleeping bag stayed at home, thus finding myself in the situation where concepts like ''warmth", "sleep" or "comfort" seemed very faraway from inside the Jerven. The setup you talk about, i.e. using a sleeping bag inside it, was reserved to colder months, and I certainly would not have bought it if I knew that I wouldn't be able to reach at least the same degree of warmth as that provided by a summer sleeping bag. That is the reason why I feel deceived by this company and by its lackeys who write or film positive reviews, exaggerating to an outrageous extent the real capabilities of this product. But, hey, everything goes in marketing strategy, right? And they do need a very good strategy in order to sell such an overpriced item. My gripe is related neither to the quality of the materials used in this bag, nor to how they were put together, but rather to the fact that the final product does not comply with the manufacturer's specifications regarding the level of warmth one should expect while laying inside it. This being such a sensitive matter, the Jerven company totally avoids to approach it in any way, so, up to this day, I have not received any reply from them, and I seriously doubt that they would ever reply. As far as I'm concerned, they are untrustworthy and unreliable. As a side note, there is another interesting claim with regard to this bag. It is said that the polyester of which it is made is completely waterproof, but they do recommend to treat it with a water repellent spray after prolonged use, in order to keep it waterproof. Isn't this confusing? Is the material waterproof by itself, or it became as such after it had been treated? Is there anywhere stated what is its value of water resistance? Is it 5,000 mm, 10,000 mm, over 20,000 mm? I wasn't able to find any information in this regard. Most probably this is another surprise, left to be discovered in use.

First of all, thanks for an interesting discussion. I need to say this, I would hate to have to rely on nothing but a Jerven in extreme conditions! It is not enough to keep you comfortable BUT it is enough to keep you alive. Without factoring in wind chill, you will never achieve a 29oC temperature increase and I don't think the manufacturer implied otherwise. To make it a truly comfortable longer term survival option you would need a ground mat and good sleeping bag at the least. That way, you can basically use it as a bivi. Which in my opinion would be a good, if not roomy, shelter for bad weather. As to you considering leaving clothing behind, those lab tests were made with fully winter clothed subjects. Now the waterproofing issue. Any material will break down over time leaving microscopic perforations, the sporadic treatments should keep this problem minimal. I think that the hydrostatic head figure is not provided as essentially, the material is considered impermeable. Overall, in practice, I use it as a replacement for my waterproof jacket, trousers and tarp that I used to carry. Saves me carrying a 1000 grams with no loss of functionality. As it is large, it keeps me and my pack drier than when I relied upon a jacket and trousers. I always have a tent and sleeping stuff. The only time I would use it as a shelter would be if I strayed from my camp and got lost or something along those lines. Cheers.
