Also respect to the choreographer, because the way you sculpt a ten-minute dance break without exhausting your performers or boring the audience is to break it into beats like this, giving each group a good moment to show off, then a moment to step back and catch their breath, and thus it plays out in a way that's interesting but also a good use of resources. (Oddly enough, I just mentally compared it to the scripting of Mad Max: Fury Road, which is basically a movie-long car chase, but where the action is cut into beats in such a way that it's not same-y and boring. Good directors and choreographers figure out how to section off and show new details of a thing that might otherwise just put the audience to sleep.)

I compare this number (in Cats) to the subset of Operas, which have a Ballet in the middle.

And this ladies and gentlemen, is the purpose of CATS. It's not meant to have an outstanding plot or storyline, it's simply meant to show you the visual and musical spectacle the cats give during their Jellicle ball. In other words, it's where the performers work hard to give us an amazing show. Is it weird? Oh totally. 100% no doubt. But it also has a lot of heart to it, and shows. THAT'S what makes it so great :)

Agreed! Just this week I was taught this part during a classical ballet class. My teacher explicitly stated she doesn’t understand the storyline to this day, but enjoys the dancing.

ironically the movie quite improves the narrative aspect, i know that you may not have enjoyed but at least it is an uncanny yet unique piece of halloween entertainment despite TOM HOOPER´S IDIOTIC ELEMENT regarding the CGI aspect XD, AND STILL, THE JELLICLE MOVIE DANCE version still captures the essence of this musical number

@@scoutart1508 Actually, funny you should say that. While I agree that the movie choreo looked really cool under certain angles, some parts of it actually misinterpreted a few of the character's personalities. Rum Tum Tugger is actually a really good example of that. I'd explain, but then this comment would just get much longer. Anyway, whether it was because of Hooper or Andy Blankenbuehler (the choreographer), I don't know. Although considering that Andy also wrote the 2016 Revivals choreo and that seems to have a pretty good grasp of the character's one way or the other, I'm pretty sure that it was Hooper.

@@scoutart1508 Funnily, I find that two of the worst parts of the movie is in the added plot and the presentation of the dance numbers. Adding that basic narrative aspect distracts the audience from the original intent of the show, which is to sit back and enjoy the spectacle, and only tempts its audience to spot all the holes and unexplained parts in the plot. Meanwhile, I find the visual presentation of the film a big mess. Especially for dance numbers like the Jellicle Ball, there is little focus on the actual dancing, when the camera either uses too many wide shots, shot so far away you can barely see the silhouette of the dancers let alone details in movement and expression, or cuts away from the dance too frequently too give us reaction shots from Victoria or Old D. It is not a film that really cares about the dance.

There arenot many musicals that can put 10 mins of dancing without any singing and still keep people watching. I love this.

I adopted my cat who came with the name Rizzo and I just felt it didn’t fit. I decided to name her after the cute little one who sings Memory along with Elaine Paige….Jemima. She was responding to it in less than 24 hours

I remember in the BTS of this film Gillian Lynne once said to the cast, something like, I want you to do your best in the shooting so that you won't be thinking anything like 'I could have done better' after the film comes out. I just want to tell her so bad that she did it, and the cast did it. They are unsurpassable.

Headcanon: The Jellicle Ball dance didn't always exist, Old Deuteronomy allowed it so cats who didn't want to sing had a chance to perform to and with the other Jellicles. This is why Victoria, Quaxo and Tumblebrutus are featured heavily, and always when the Old Deuteronomy tune is playing. It's also why Old Deuteronomy joins in in certain parts, he's very proud of his creation and wants to join in the fun.

I love the detail that it's the cats with powers (the twins and Misto) that sense Grizabela first, followed by Skimble, who is the most attentive of the tribe.

I really liked it when noticed that Mr. Misto, instead of pointing at Grizabella, created lights and just distracted everyone. One more reason to love this cat :3

Jacob is such a good dancer y'all. He just...brings life to his performance.

Phyllida Smith is a breath-taking ballerina; her expression of the Cats choreo is simply the best, including the prologue dance, there are so many details yet so pleasant to eyes and balanced; and she really looks like an adorable white furry elegant cat...

Imagen being a owner of one of these cats just to find them dancing with other cats and that they all want to go to heaven...

I love how the musical portrayed Victoria and Plato's mating dance/pas de deux as graceful, beautiful, and very intimate. Yet, when you see real cats do it, it's actually awkward, noisy, and sometimes chaotic.

This movie is so underrated. One of the best stage musical to film adaptations of all time. Why? Because it IS in essence the stage production, in all of its glory. No hubris on the part of directors who insist on making it "their own" or leaving their mark on it: just Cats. No CGI, just beautiful costumes and make-up. No unnecessary celebrities, just incredible performers at the top of their game. THIS is how it's done.

Rum Tum Tugger is my favorite by far, and I love seeing the little moments in this. Like how when everyone is starting to lay down, he's just lounging in the back in a very Tugger sort of pose, and then he is over there talking with his daddy.

Watching my cats react to cats is always amazing

I love how this is a compilation of the other songs, but with their own little spin on each segment

4:23 - That dancing pose when it hits that huge musical note is pure theater!!!!

I love Cassandra so much, what a perfect cat, lol.

Best parts are starting from Mistoffelees, Alonzo, and others dancing, into Bombalurina’s suave entrance, and ending with Mistoffelees and Tumblebrutus’ duet.

This is wonderful, but I wish they had released the uncut version. There are sections of the Jellicle Ball that are missing.

I keep dancing to this cause I have an audition for Cats Jr and I’m using this to practice. I love this number so much, I just feel like it tells a story without them saying anything! I wish I had the DVD of this whole musical 😭😢

I went to see this when I was 10. I'm 37 now and still remember how in awe I felt! Maybe because i was 10, but the props.. oversized gigantic cornflake boxes, or massive boots being thrown on stage. I laughed but my nan said " well imagine if you were a little cat, that's what it would look like." I love the music too, it just captures the personalities of different cats. Playful, moody, melodramatic. The movie they brought our recently is rubbish. Such a thing has to be on stage, it takes you in completely.

Can I just say how much I love Quaxo's tail? It's like really cute and in my opinion, the best tail of all of the Jellicles (other than Cassandra's ofc).

My favourite musical ever. All cats are individual, as this portrays. I have definitely got a Mr Mistoffelees in his manner and the the same colour. No backflips or cartwheels yet. You never now. That'll be the day, I don't think

Victoria and Plato. My Lord. They’re so good. And I swear, this is why I love writing with nonhuman characters and cultures. You can have a race - cats, or rabbits (Watership Down), or whatever - and you can write them with this instinctual one-mindedness that you can’t give to humans. Victoria’s no longer a kitten, she’s beautiful, she shows off, and she takes a mate. Its natural. It’s simple, and you don’t have to worry about writing a typical romance, when it would interfere with the story or bog down the plot. Humans (maybe mostly the writer types, who knows) are so self-conscious and awkward and we have so many finicky rules about interacting with one another so distantly, it’s refreshing to see something like the Jellicle Ball where everyone’s comfortably in sync.

It's never too late to catch the stage version, I guess. It took me a long time, but Cats were never among the first choices of going to a musical, since I figured "a bunch of dancing cats" surely wasn't for me. After seeing the 2019 movie, which I enjoyed, I thought I would give it a chance, since it would be easier for me to understand the plot of the musical (as English isn't my native tongue). Saw a touring version last year, and started to watch these clips from the 1998 movie. Now, I watch several clips each night and I do realize that the 1998 version is so far above the 2019 version, it's crazy.

It just hit me that half of this dance is basically a mating dance, and the scene at 4:34 is the younger cats breaking into their first heat and that's why their behavior suddenly changes. .-. The scene that follows after is Victoria's first mating

Just! Jo Gibb at 8:32 is so… GAH!! Elegant? Smooth? Fun? Amazing.

Victoria 🥰 Was there ever a cat so lustrous as adorable, Mrs. Victoria? Love at first sight - I'll admit it, I didn't understand the musical right away either, but I did understand one thing: the nature of the enchanting Victoria. She outshines any other cat, captures any show, captures any fantasy. Why? Maybe it's because of Victoria's metaphorical character, a snow-white young cat in the midst of a garbage dump, gifted with never seen terpsichorean powers, the quiet manner and name of a great monarch with a radiant aura that makes even the Jellicle Moon to appear pale; this white cat who, free from suspicion and a clouded view of the past, welcomes the glamor cat. But no, it's not just her pure appearance, but also her distinct movements that make every wonderful dance of any of the cats even more perfect. I've seen so many shows, trying to sit up front or at least close to the entrances to get a close moment with her as she walks by. Oh, Victoria, I love you. 🥰

I loved Baubulina's part(red cat lady). I had it memorized when I was a kid.

You have to be a real master to be in this musical, man look at them dance. 👅❤

This will forever be one of the best scenes in Cats for me. The music is amazing, as is the dancing, it all comes together so wonderfully 😭💞 never get tired of rewatching to see what all the different cats are doing

Starting at 6:00 is my favorite part...it is just so happy and 80's sounding with all the synth! I also love the part where they all lean back together, and of course the pas de deux.

I’ve always loved that rift at 7:45 sends chills down my spine every time

I did Cats Abridged in 2017 (I played Munkustrap, and it was literally a lifelong dream come true!) and this (or, well, a shortened version of it lol) was the Act 1 Finale, and honestly, I feel like it's a far stronger A1F than Memory Prelude. If you wanna have two lots of Memory, replace Moments of Happiness with it, have the older cats scare her off, have the cast relax to the same music that plays after MoH, then go straight into Jemima/Siliabub singing Daylight 🤷‍♂️

The Jellicle Ball is fantastic! Wonderful music, great harmony among the dancers, and so expressive in every move!

the actors before this: "Soo you want me to slowly touch her leg and then place her on another womans stomach while she is doing a bridge? YOU GOT IT CHIEF!"

I always come back when my inner 5 year old self needs to be visited as a mean of my inner-child healing & I always cry 😂 I’m almost 30 now. I used to make my mom & sisters watch this with me nonstop lol. I remember we were in the VHS section at like Target or something & I picked it bc I could read “CATS” & then I got the Rugrats Movie.
