This clip is a rough cut of what we might use to introduce Calcutta's role in the Story of Indian Jazz. We are in need of authentic photos and documents from the Jazz age of Calcutta. Specifically we are missing interior photos with bands in the clubs and ballrooms, including Princes, the Golden Slipper, The Winter Garden , the Blue Fox. We also need

I remember Ted Weatherford very well.......I was born in Calcutta,,,,,I remember when I was 8 years old in 1943 I had been very ill, when I got well, my Dad took me to The Winter Gardens night club, in Calcutta Ted Weatherford was playing there....I got on the stage and stood by the piano while he played,,,,,he then asked me if I knew how to play the piano and I said yes,,he then asked me to play something for him and I played In The Mood, I was only 8 years old , that was an evening I will always remember, I am now 80 years old.

This is really interesting. My parents would tell me stories of seeing Teddy Weatherford & Jimmy Witherspoon, Billy Eckstine,Count Basie & Duke Ellington at the ballrooms mentioned above. They knew a number of anglo-indian jazz artists back in the 1940s-1950s. Percy Mann was one...a clarinetist.

This is what Jazz was then..... Like a living breathing breathing heart, growing, evolving, changing, but like the spirit of jazz.... Improvising.. Within set formats/ rules.. Of that era... Those rules have changed, radically, blossomed into myriad forums of today.. With influences from all over the world, Latin with African influences, direct African new influences rhythms, Arabic Spanish influences, artists from Europe, Scandinavia.. So much cross fertilisation taking place now.. Esp in the Americas, esp Latin America and Cuba, a hothouse of fecund, prolific, prodigious incubated explosive dynamic ideas & energy.. .. Rich talent.. Great genius.. That was then.. Reflecting those times.. Of post Empire indolence, leisure.. Music is Universal. Belongs to everyone.. Is like water..or air.. the need to breathe it in, drink it copiously, enjoy it, experience it... There's only your sensibilities and ability to absorb the medium, the musical ideas, and feel the rhythms.. To luxuriate in the experience.. There's no rich and poor.. In music.. Just participants who enjoy the ride.. And those who don't feel, don't understand, can't let go..& go with the flow.. To learn to understand and enjoy it.. Its Universal.. Just like qawwali or shayari... Its inventive creative enjoyment bliss.. Of creation Enjoy. Yr criticism is absence of understanding.. And argumentative.. There's is No place for that here.. My friend.. Don't like it ? Leave ! Switch Off ! Enough said

Jazz has come a long way since that time when it was played in posh hotels..Old greats are also old. From what I am hearing here , it seems these guys are frozen in time and that is symptomatic of any old Indian musicians..they get too happy with too little.I am not bashing rich becoz they don't really have good taste here in India. So I don't expect from them too much. Its the good audience that challenges the artists to strive.

please stop posh bashing, and what exactly is a 'enjoyment for the rich'? i'd never heard of a music form that only the rich can enjoy. The not-rich don't seem to have any sort of hearing or brain-function deficiency that won't let them listen and enjoy some form of music. please explain 'hotel jazz' too. all the old greats seem to have played in some sort of hotel or bar, kept on doing so even after they got rich!

This is not really jazz..some enjoyment for rich. Where is the ingenuity and beauty here..i cant feel it. Hotel jazz is the last thing i want to hear. :(
