My Dad's last boat was the 356 under Bull Halsey's 3rd Fleet. Gunners mate at 17. His Howard Johnson map he kept from a returning troop train stop is a illustrated history book but it's self. The invasions and patrols he took part in then recorded while still fresh is stunning. Pt 356. The " Honeysuckle Rose " was one of 2 P.T.S on night recon sweeps that were accredited with being the 1st Allied vessels to enter the Philippines Sea since MacArthur left on a PT. I found that out from The Naval Records online. A Smithsonian fact. My dad never mentioned that. Just a few stories that he chose to share. He did mark on the map who and where his friends fell. The map is my prize possession. I do have his dress blues. He was a little guy at 17 I can tell you that.

@valedslinger6290 Sir Thank you so much for sharing this incredible piece of history about your dad's service during World War II. It's truly touching to hear about his experiences aboard PT 356, known as the "Honeysuckle Rose," and the significant role it played in Allied operations in the Philippines Sea. Your dad's dedication as a gunner's mate at such a young age and his commitment to preserving the memories of his fellow servicemen on that Howard Johnson map are admirable. The map sounds like a priceless treasure filled with personal stories and history. It's clear that your dad had a remarkable and humble spirit, choosing to cherish these memories privately. His dress and the map are wonderful keepsakes that help preserve his legacy and the history of those times. Thank you for sharing this glimpse into your dad's courageous and honorable service. #LestWeForget

@@kilcar He was in Ron 27. Pt 356 was his 3rd Boat. I can research the map I have and be more factual, but I recall The Gilbert Islands, The Solomons, Mindanao, Coral sea, Borneo, Sipan, and a base at Balikapan. His squad was on patrol with the 109 that night. He knew JFK as a "Skinny LT." My mom has a pic of 3 Pts leaving a dock. 109, 356, and I forget the 3rd. He always commented on the lack of notice of the PT Crewmen that stayed on Batan to make room for MacArthur staff. A point of pride for the Ron Squadron. Unheralded for sure.

I laughed when I heard the bit about "The Bluejackets Manual", being issued in 1943. Why? I was an ROTC cadet between 1973-1976 when I graduated after 3 years of college. I was commissioned as an ensign of course and one of the two books we had to own and read were "The Officer's Guide" and "The Bluejackets Manual". I still have both stashed on my bookshelf. Both have dog-eared pages. History. Makes me feel old. But then, I am.

Family history as well . Father was a WW2 vet , had an Itallian POW as a helper , said you couldnt do that with the Germans . He actually made friends with the guy as much as reasonable . I could send you a copy of an uncle's USAAF field report, dated 1944. He was an aircraft mechanic , he and his crew would fix up downed allied aircraft behind enemy lines , then a crew would be dropped to fly them out . This report was about two B24s that went down in Yugoslavia . The Yugo partizans were feeding and protecting the Americans while they did their work . Ended up having to blow up the repaired plane to prevent the Germans from getting it . Found out later that the B24s were part of an agreement we made with the Russians , to land in USSR to refuel and rearm , hitting targets imortant to the red army on the return flight . People dont know about that , as it was silenced in the cold war . But by doing that , NO area was safe from allied bombing , as the bomber could use its full capable range , by landing in Russia . Be interesting to hear an Italian soldiers interpritation of it all . @@WW2Tales
