The Japanese Doom Psych Band Who Hijacked an Airplane

Ойын-сауық

Most people are introduced to Les Rallizes Dénudés as the band whose former bassist hijacked an airplane during Japan's late 60s/early 70s counterculture movement. But while this did indeed happen, it's hardly the most interesting thing about them. The Rallizes' blistering, feedback-laden "Wall of Sound" music is awe-inspiring and incredibly innovative. They played doomy shoegaze punk rock years before shoegaze, or punk rock were even a thing.

Unfortunately, Takashi Mizutani passed away sometime in 2019, and we only just got the news today. The phone call from Makoto Kubota to Mr. Mizutani mentioned here, said to be from 2020, was actually from 2019, very close to the time of his death. The reason it is just now coming out is that since Mr. Mizutani does not often contact people it seemed normal that no word was heard for several years and those close to him assumed he was still alive. May he rest in peace, and be remembered for his incredible musical talent and pioneering of many musical genres. R.I.P. Takashi Mizutani 1948 - 2019

After Moriaki left, the story of how Mizutani recruited his new bassist is great. Allegedly he asked the bassist he wanted to meet to go to a cafe so that they could "talk". The bassist was already in a band and wasnt sure he'd join LRD. Mizutani pulled up to the cafe in a van, opened the door and demanded he get in. Dude basically kidnapped his bassist to get him to join 😂

After the hijacking, Mizutani was extremely paranoid that the American CIA was after him. I believe he went as far as to make sure he never appeared on the street during daylight for a number of years after the incident. He was never "found" because I don't think the CIA were ever looking for him, but it goes some way to explaining his clandestine behaviour.

@@michealpersicko9531 Bro, he was in close contact with a terrorist, almost a world famous one at the time. Police usually looks into terrorists' friends, that's just usual business. Of course CIA wasn't looking for him, but the Japanese police definitely had a file made for him, and that is normal. The rest is just paranoia probably, but there were confirmed cases of Japanese police surveilling people who were close with (for example) Japanese Red Army Faction. Again, that is how it is in every country. Your comment is pointless, because no one is "throwing groups" into this, literally only two options exist - CIA and Japanese police. CIA argument isn't baseless too, by the way. CIA was working with the Japanese on the Yodogo incident, and had deep roots in Japan, since US was controlling the country until barely 20 years before Yodogo and were on look out for every revolutionary/protest/extremist group that was there acting at that time.

This band was actually one of the biggest reasons I picked up bass guitar again after years. The simple yet captivating bass lines in “Enter The Mirror” and “Otherwise Fallin Love With” were easy enough to figure out by ear in 10 minutes and that was enough to get me started on other songs. This band will always have a special place in my heart because of that.

Longtime fan of this band. Glad they’re getting more recognition thanks to videos like this! According my late friend and bandmate Yuzo Iwata, who shared a rehearsal space with Mizutani in the 80’s as a member of Maher Shalal Hash Baz, the actual reason why they never released any proper studio albums was simply that Mizutani was somewhat insecure about the sound of his voice. He hated the way his vocals sounded on higher fidelity recordings. Hence, the bootlegs. Another interesting detail he shared is that a lot of the younger art rockers in Japan at the time regarded them as kind of corny, because they associated them with the 60’s. Most of the younger people in the scene dismissed them along the typical “punks vs hippies” lines.

For those that don't know them already, you should definitely check out Flower Travellin' Band as well (a clip of their Satori II video is used at 9:53). As best as I understand it, they were another band who played a large part in introducing noise-rock, heavy metal, and psychedelic rock sounds to Japan. Granted their music is quite different from this band's - and probably a lot more 'accessible', as they were heavily influenced by the classic rock sounds of the US in the late 60s/early 70s - but they were also a part of the counterculture movement. A good place to start would be their Anywhere album, where they covered classics like 21st Century Schizoid Man, House of the Rising Sun, etc... And their rendition of Louisiana Blues is out of this world.

Ive really enjoyed your documentaries lately. Some outstanding digs and wonderful discoveries. As a musician, I have been spending a lot of time looking in places Ive never looked before. As someone who has married into another culture, the discoveries I have enjoyed over the years, learning how small my American mind has been. I have been making music for nearly 34 years now, from Prog Rock to metal but have only recently discovered a growing appetite for the sounds of history outside the borders of my Western country. Your videos have been a delicious and informative find. I applaud your efforts and encourage you to continue your digging and discoveries as well. The 2020 world reset has provided a unique opportunity for me to spend time exploring new sounds, bands, projects and fantastic events that have remained hidden away until now. There have been profound bands and events that have carved out changes on the world stage that are worthy of being shared. For those who truly appreciate art, music and the creative souls opening the minds of those who dare to listen, I encourage them to spend some time with your many videos and I am confident they will learn a Great deal and find some inspiration as well. Salute to you good sir. Thank you for your efforts, interests and awesome story telling.
