The thing I think makes James feels so disproportionate is the height of his chassis. Also just the layout and sizing of the chassis in general. The wheels feel a bit too big, they feel a bit to spaced out, all the engines feel a bit out of gauge because of the way they tried to do the flanges with the hubs sticking out, and James's proportions really highlight my gripes with the new wheels. James is a skinny guy, and with how high off the track he sits, he feels like an American engine, with how tall he is. His skinnyness also emphasizes the width of the wheels. I actually think his length compared to the length of the tender isn't too bad. I think the biggest change I would make is to put all six wheels one one bogey, with the pony truck as a pony truck, and made all the wheels a bit smaller so the driving wheels line up with the wheel wells. The chassis are really triggering a serious uncanny valley thing for me, with them feeling just wrong enough to be unsettling.

James is done very wrong, the new Toby is also very awkward. In Mattel's new energy to impress us with more details, more wheels and more elaborate boxing they are drifting away from the essential scale of engines.

Great review! I remember when I first got my James, I was glad that he was still slightly smaller than original TWR tender engines. As for getting more, I personally think you should! Especially the upcoming wave 2 models like Edward and Henry. Plus I really enjoy these videos. Keep up the good work!

I've never collected Wooden Railway stuff but DAYUM do i want these! The faces are just so damn CUTE!

my issue with the James is kind of the face. he honestly imo, looks like either he had all the sugar... or some other white powdery substance. at least from some angles. ngl that is kinda accurate since in the model series James had all the interesting faces. great vid as always Trainboy!

How would it look putting one of the older James tenders behind him? I think that might make him seem a bit more natural in terms of side.

Got here in less than an hour, nice :)

My most favorite detail is that they added his front pony truck. (The 2 small wheels upfront.) Mainly because almost all James merchandise lacked this feature.

He would probably be almost perfect if they did the WR Arthur approach, having the front two wheels attached straight to the frame and the rear six on a loose bogey.

I do really like this brand of Wooden Railway. I never had the wood boys as a kid because my parents KNEW they would break...andprobablybecausetheycostwaymorethanTakeAlong...but these are definitely a step in the right direction for me. I like the old wooden Thomas toys, but having something closer to Take Along in terms of looks is quite nice.

I got my 2022 James at barns and noble although the wheels are big I honestly think it’s a nice model!

I mean, if there's one thing i would change, is the tender and the cab, adding a black area to the back so it can get more realistic. And size more his smokebox and face. But the model itself seems good.

It's definitely an interesting review. I personally would've preferred if the three larger wheels were on there own axis. But as of right now, I'm curious to see your thoughts on Hiro, with his lack of a fourth set of driving wheels and the addition of a set of leading bogie wheels.

I think you should get more! The Edward, Henry, Emily, and Toby look pretty nice despite me thinking Toby looks a bit smaller then I think he should.

I feel like they're still worth the money given the amount of quality and detail going into each model as well as the amount of wood.

He looks like an RWS James for some odd reason.

I like him a lot also if you notice gordon is bigger there using the original bogies from old twr for james and the old murdoch bogie (i think) for gordon so i think they nailed the medium part

Honestly, if the model had the driving wheels on one bogie and then the leading wheels on another bogie, it would more or less be perfect for me. Either way, I'm thinking about going to a DOWT at the B&O Museum in Baltimore, so maybe I'll get summer models then.

Despite having accurate wheel confiugurations I never really cared much for the 2022 Thomas Wooden Railway. I only really like the 1992 - 2001 engines (well range as the whole) and I still stick by that.

I’m just glad Mattel is making good products again and not that crappy reboot

I was very mixed on James when I first saw the promos but I recently bought a James of my own and I actually quite like him. His proportions are still a little wack but he’s very nice looking in person.

I recently got thomas and diesel but I'm trying to get gordon and I'm waiting on henry.

The major problems I have and I think everybody else is going to have with the new Wooden Railway is the rolling stock for one the Annie & Clarabelle does not look right at all and if you've seen pictures of the new troublesome trucks the printing on the wheels doesn't look right While we all appreciate and we can agree that the engines are a massive upgrade and are very welcomed by everyone just when you look at the rolling stock it's like a massive downgrade it's like when Mattel designed the engines they took 10 steps forward but with the rolling stock Mattel took 10 steps backwards in the wrong direction and with the new Tidmouth shed and Knapford Station it's like Mattel is trying to overcomplicate the destinations what made the original Wooden Railway destinations work is that they were simple but in a good way they weren't visually overstimulating and they weren't trying to be something that they're not like Mattel is trying to do with the new Wooden Railway destinations In my mind if Mattel is going to keep the new Wooden Railway range going the destinations and the rolling stock are going to need a massive redesign because like I said with the engines they took 10 steps forward but with the rolling stock and the destinations also they took 10 steps backwards in the wrong direction and it will be interesting to see how they do certain characters moving forward because if they don't get certain characters right then this could be a failure for the whole range While I like the engines in the new Wooden Railway range as a whole very much If Mattel is going to keep the new Wooden Railway going and making sure that it will be a success they are going to have to work out some major flaws and problems in order to make that happen and like I said one being the rolling stock and the second being the destinations and even with that being said why didn't Mattel just re-release the old Wooden Railway destinations Instead of the redesigns we're getting

I think if they have made his chassie as a 6 wheel with a extra 2 wheel at the front. It would have worked better. Making him still accurate along with the chance to shrink him a little bit to show he’s a medium size engine. Still for a first attempt in this new ear of Wooden Railway. I say it’s still a good model. Plus he is still 100x better than his Wood counterpart.

I like the new James model but I think Mattel screwed the pooch with James is tender you know and seeing how Mattel miss sized James is tender I think the tenders are going to be a major problem for Mattel moving forward I think with even other engines we're going to see even more problems with the tenders such as Murdoch and Spencer and Donald and Douglas because if Mattel doesn't get those tenders right for those engines then you might as well say those models are all wrong

I think, that james chassis is way to big. I mean, just look at the space between the wheels and the actuall tender. A lower chassis and smaller/older TWR wheels would do wonders for this model.

when you compare this to, for example, the Diesel model, I mostly hate the James one ngl, which is sad, with James being my favourite

The color is great but I have quite a few issues with this new James. First of all his tender is way too small and his face is not tv series accurate at all and his boiler is way too long. Do you know if Henry, Toby or Emily are in stores yet?
