The Jailscraper vs. Chinatown: NYC Residents Fight Construction of World's Tallest Jail
Residents of New York's Chinatown are speaking out against the construction of a new megajail in the neighborhood that would be a third as high as the Empire State Building, which would likely make it the tallest jail in the world, if finished. The so-called jailscraper is part of an $8 billion plan to build new jails across the city in order to retire the infamous Rikers Island facility, but opponents say that money would be better spent on social services, harm reduction and other initiatives that would better serve the community. Jan Lee, co-founder of the community group Neighbors United Below Canal, says Chinatown residents are interested in "creating a more humane environment for those who are incarcerated." We also speak with Christopher Marte, who represents the area on New York City Council, and Jon Alpert, co-founder of the community media center DCTV, based in Chinatown for half a decade, who has been documenting the struggle.

TheRealPhil, you made an excellent point. When people were trying to fight to end poverty, classism, racism, and capitalism the media and your fellow Americans looked the other way. Now because of the pandemic those people who looked the other way for years are in trouble themselves, and have lost their homes and are living in shelters, in their cars and on the street. Donald Trump, Joe Bidan, Nancy Pelosi, the congress and the Senate threw them a few crumbs and said," YOU are on Your own," we're going to give a trillion dollars to the people in the Ukraine and Afghanistan. Let's also give them all our baby formula. The American people are stupid, they just sit quietly while they slowly kill us. Don't you people get it, in their minds we are the enemy, that's why they are attacking us.

A major corporate jail, but let's see where all like the same elsewhere in the world. Those who most belong inside of that monstrosity in the country, will never see the inside of a jail cell, but I bet all love this project. Ask someone like The Clinton's. Corporate hauls off into prisons for profits, began being implemented under The Clinton administration, but conceived during The Reagan administration. Imagine how many people will be quickly unjustly punished just to keep that monstrosity full and profitable. Taxpayers money funds it all. The more put inside, the more taxpayers money given to the corporation. Everyone not in politics or connected to, especially in the state of New York, might see the inside of that place. Add another big why to scare people off and away from New York City and state, but from wherever else can be sent there.

Sounds great but for the addicted and insane, they will continue to randomly attack New Yorkers, defecate and piss on the streets, and even worst shop lift to their content. Just don t complain to the rest of the country when your quality of life declines, businesses move out and your city budget hits a deficit. Please ask the rest of the country for a bailout because you are New York City. You guys voted for this insanity, now deal with it. Three things historically are needed for a city to exist, clean source of water, good sewage system to eliminate waste and safety. People will come to it, buy homes and open business in it. Miss any of these three essentials, the city will decline. You need your jails, otherwise the criminals will be left on the streets and you will have to deal with them. If the nice guy approach worked, crime would have dropped in NY since bail reform. It has not. Too many of the released end up being repeaters.
Just let the criminals do what they want, give them what they demand and they probably won't kill you.

Reaping what they showed, slowly, ut surely and abundantly..... AmeriKKKa 🙏🏾📖
I understand the whole NIMBY attitude - BUT, first of all, Rikers is a Hell Hole and it is very close to the courts. When push comes to shove, how many residential tenements are being torn down or how many people are going to be displaced?
Only in America would there be a high rise jail in the middle of a city. So strange and dystopian.
THERE IS LOTS OF MONEY TO BE MADE IN JAILS...
The world's tallest jail is the perfect metaphor for what our country has become. We let this happen a long time ago and somehow still think that crime bill Joe Biden is going to fix it. We deserve this!
Damn, this INSANE
The Mayor does not CARE 😡🤬😡!
Put jail in Staten island also
Stop arresting low level drug charges for marijuana
That's just "one" of the new jails in the area - they must be expecting an incredible rise in crime, because crime rate is already high
Keep that same energy to help People that are suffering in Jail. Not once did hey mentioned the care of humans or the need to help. Only money talk.
Unless the buildings are condemned, it makes more sense to put the money into community and prevention. The councilman says it himself: "modernize the buildings and build housing instead."

This is a form of targeting the poor and the unfortunate for small crimes such as your showed on your show the other day of three strikes you're out and you get a life sentence for something as simple as $150 jacket

100% I would argue that they are also targeting the poor residents in Chinatown by making it less residentially oriented. Gentrification at it's finest!

Stop stealing after you have two strikes? Or move to San Francisco where it's okay to loot stores and not even be arrested nor harass by the police? Not to mention SF has nicer weather than NYC. [Sarcasm]

A tall jail is a great idea, now all the politicians can really have “Friends in high places”.
