I am Chinese and I live in 天津. My parents have used them before. It is entirely compatible with NES cartridges! They say it is rather a NES clone than a computer. Those "educational computers" are much cheaper that the real NES back then and you can run visually every NES cartridges on it, and that's why it went really popular. Just a technical point, this computer's CPU is a total clone of the MOS 6502 processor on the NES, however they added an extra I/O chip for the keyboard. (Pls pin me)

Back in the 90s and early 2000s these Chinese computers were very popular in Russia, as well as other NES clones from Taiwan. Russians called them "Subor".

It's not a total clone. These famiclones usually use UMC6576 or similar NES-On-Chip as their kernel rather than separate chips. There are lots special quirks and differents in it compared to a normal Famicom or NES. If you try to run some very complex games that are tailored to Famicom/NES circuit setup e.g. BattleToads, it won't work. On the other hand, complex games tailored for such NOAC won't work on Famicom/NES, especially unlicensed (but actually quite polished) games by Waixing (外星科技) or Jncota (晶科泰).

Nice to see another video on this, caught Winston's a while back. I thought the internet would be all over that Jackie Chan computer the first time I saw a picture of it but not many video features. Let me throw in some trivia. Subor was actually founded by Duan Yongping - a very enterprising fellow. Back than foreign gaming devices were banned in China, so he actually personally reverse engineered a Famicom and made it play jNTSC games in PAL (that's why here are vertical bands on the screen and the timing is off). He arranged mass production of a "homegrown" gaming device, effectively coining the standard of an awful famiclone as we know it. He mass produced the bloody thing until the late 90s, when he got fed up by it, sold the company and started a DVD-player manufacturer known as BBK. In mid to late 2000s effectively every second DVD-player in the world was BBK (one way or another)... And then he got fed up again! He founded a mobile phone manufacturer known as OPPO and One Plus. His company is bigger than Apple in Asia and Duan Yongping one of the most rich Chinese... Well one of the richest people in the world! I wonder, what shall he do, when he gets bored with mobile phones? PS. I have one of those Subor keyboard contraptions (the Russian version), as I collect weird computers. Sadly no educational cartridges. Perhaps somebody would ship me one of those? I'll pay for the delivery.

Maybe one day you'll see me on a motorbike in China on one of his videos :p . I just need to learn how to ride a motorbike. And go to China.

RetroManCave that would be awesome :) PS in South Africa(where I am) we never really had the official Nintendo systems only a extremely limited number of of grey imports , what thrived here was the famiclones , nick named "TV games" mostly it was the "golden China" clones , I wouldn't mind sending you one but it will be no different to any other famiclone you can get there so I don't know if it will be any value to you :)

I've seen pictures of a later version of this with a 3.5" floppy drive built in, so if this version doesn't have any cassette or external floppy ports that was remedies fairly quick.

funny thing about the scale at 10:00 is that is it's displayed as C major but it's actually minor, and not only that, but it's the D minor scale (dorian) gotta love Chinese quality control hahaha

This keyboard console was half of my childhood! I still have the cartridge that came with it and about 20(something) other cartridges laying around at my parents place. It was a weekly ritual where me and my brother would go down to the marked every Saturday and exchange one cartridge each for a new one. Edit: Oh and for those of you wondering my cartridges only contain one chip under a blip of black goo, not so fancy as the one shown here.

My jaw is stuck in the open position right now. I clicked for the Jackie Chan computer, but I don't think anything can top Naomi.

Very well-made video. In the mid 90s there was a flood of Subor console/education PCs in Russia in various form-factors and I always assumed the name was something local since the programs were in Russian, but turns out it was a Chinese company.

This kind of reminds me of the Magnavox Odyssey 2 (the only gaming console I have ever owned.) As a former English Teacher in China for a few years, I always appreciate the way clever Chinese people innovate to sneak around draconian PRC laws.
