The Jack Of All Trades | 2023 Audio Technica ATH-M50x Review

Ғылым және технология

The Audio Technica ATH-M50x has been proclaimed as one of the best headphones in the market. It's hard to say who these headphones are truly meant for since they strike such a balance between so many uses, which is how they became the jack of all trades, master of none of the audio world.

Great review on a HP that's not talked about at all these days. I got into the hobby in recent years after the hype for these died out. Will have to try these out.

I’ve owned a pair for 12 years now. I’ve recorded, produced and mixed hundreds of tracks with these. I’ve even gotten compliments from professional mastering engineers about mixes I’ve done exclusively with these saying the mixes translated very well to the mastering stage and sounded really good. All in all, I really like those headphones. They’ve travelled with me in backpacks and the only thing that has come apart is the earcups that I just replaced 3 years ago. They have a good build quality and deliver good results as long as one knows them well and knows what to listen for when producing/mixing.

Loved your honest and almost complete point of view on these covered mostly everything other than the one thing I was really interested in hearing ya view on and that was using them for gaming esp for FPS still tossing up between something like these or DT-970/990s

*I have my M50X since 2015 for all around uses and one thing I can say is "It's a Tank!!".* *The plastic frame has it's own issue but can be resolved by hand nonetheless it's a good headphones.* *"9/10"*

thank you so much.. great review.. idk why many people hating the m50x. I tried this headphone at jaben store 10 years ago and at that time I really like the sound.. and couple of months ago I came to the same store trying the same headphone unit that surprisingly it is still intact after hundreds of people have been using it.. it still sounded great.. I love it..

I think a lot of the hate comes from its lack of character. It’s versatility naturally makes it a bit lukewarm but I think people expect it to sound stellar since it’s so popular.

Nauu to haters because when I tried these back 2015, i feel in love with them, the only reason i bought the mdr1abt because of aesthetics and bluetooth capability. 😂

I’ve seen a lot of good things about these headphones. I’m getting them to plug into my guitar amp and just casually listen to music and shows. Is the bass really prominent and booming but not all over the place?

The bass is definitely hyped but I don’t think it’s out of control.

Watching your review with my M50x🤣I do agree with your pov that M50x are done so well like a hexagon fighter. I start to look for my next headphone pick with Vocal focus & good amount of bass. I'm not bass head type of person, any recommend? Thinking about Hifiman Ananda, what's your suggestion?

  • @KenCreates

🤣 but I do understand why it’s such a contentious headphone. It’s versatility sucks all of the character out of it. Are you looking for something that’s easy to travel with, open back or closed, and what’s your budget?

@@KenCreates Yeah, I saw a lot of review from how great it is to how worthless to buy🤣 but for me it's great. So far portability not really important to me due to home listening, I heard that open back headphone are full of joy in soundstage but I never try it yet. Budget around 500usd probably, mostly listen to ACG, JPOP & KPOP.

@@Jackson0709 Open back headphones are an incredible experience but in general, open back headphones tend to not have a lot of bass due to the way they're built. I don't have experience with hifiman (yet) but I only hear good things about most of them. I was looking at the hifiman drop HE4xx for exactly the description you mentioned, but I'm sure the Ananda will outperform them in every way.

what does he mean by break them in, is it hardware or the fact you gotta get used to the tone of the headphones

Typically most headphones and IEMs need time for the drivers to fully open up and reach the ideal sound quality they’ve been advertised for. The sound you’ll get listening straight out of the box is not the same sound after you’ve put a couple hundred hours of play time on them. The process of letting audio/music/white noise play on new headphones for several hours/days to open up the drivers is called burning in or breaking in

I have done some testing and I have come to realize the sound quality of these headphones is significantly affected by the.headphone's stock earpads. The sound of these headphones becomes much closer to neutral (flat) with a change of the earpads. When doing so, the very slight prominence of the bass frequencies becomes less and the voices and musical instruments' already realistic sound becomes even more realistic There is a (what reviewer Lachlan described as a "shimmer" to the sound of these headphones) I would agree with the augmenting comment that shimmer sounds slightly unnatural to my ears. That shimmer is removed with a change of the earpads. I do not know if all types of earpads will affect/improve the the sound of these headphones the way the ones I used did but I do obviously know the earpads I used did. The earpads I used were a hybrid type made of imitation leather and a fibrous (somewhat velvet-like) material that touches the side of the face around the ears. I hope this information is helpful to you.

These have made no sense to buy for about 8 years now, and I still see people wearing them, and two friends ignored all my advice to buy a pair, and they hate them. For the good of everyone AT should just discontinue them.

Were your friends were looking for headphones with a certain character? The M50s are versatile because they really don’t have any character at all. I think people buy these with the expectation that because they’re popular that they must have coveted sound quality but they’re really just lukewarm utilitarian cans.
