The Island Leader Who’s Sticking It to China | Ishmael Toroama

Bougainville is a small island of around 300,000 residents. It's currently part of Papua New Guinea, but it wants to break away and become its own nation. One of the things that makes this island so special is its ability to thwart Chinese influence. In this episode of China Unscripted, we look at the history of Bougainville, how its leader, Ishmael Toroama, is sticking it to China, and how China factors into Bougainville's bid for independence. Joining us in this episode is John Kuhns, the chairman and CEO of Numa Numa Resources in Bougainville. He’s also the author of the book They Call Me Ishmael, a novel based on the real story of a rebel leader with big dreams for his island.

When I was growing up, my dad(therefore family) befriended two Boganvillians who were over here in Australia. One was studying, the other was having a complex operation on his spine. They were lovely, and when they smiled, their teeth were like beacons as their skin was so black. Their humor was laconic but poignantly reflective, showing a deep intelligence I now realise. I greatly enjoyed being around them.

In 1988 the BRA demanded 14 billion dollars from BCL to allow them to continue operating. BCL was obliged by law to always negotiate with the central government, not the landowners. While BCL was trying to make changes to allow it to pay more to the landowners BRA attacked BCL assets. Bougainvillians in general very racist against the people of PNG. I lived there 13 years

As an Australian, our biggest bogan destination in the region is Bali. Hence the term Bali Bogan! But the reference was a nice and funny surprise to hear.

We need honesty here. The biggest copper mine in bouganville was by an Australian company. both PNG and the Australian goverment had directi onvolvement in the crisis due to ecoconomic interest. Both were responsible for the unfare sharing of wealth with the islanders that led to the war. When the war started australia provided helicopters to the PNGDF to fight the rebels.

Why not join Australia? It would give more security than independence. They would probably have to be have to have another UN referendum, but being a state in Australia, after negotiating good terms would be very beneficial as far as economic stability and health care.

Just to put the record straight, In central New South Wales, Australia there's a town called Nyngan on the Bogan river. In 2015 they made the logical decision to erect a giant cutout statue of a Big Bogan. A guy in a singlet, with a fishing rod and beer cooler, holding his thumb up. Think twice before disparaging significant cultural icons like Bogans. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Bogan
