The IRON HANDS Legion in the HORUS HERESY | Legion X: Origins & Lore

Ойындар

The Iron Hands were one of the most powerful Legions of the Great Crusade and their commander one of the most respected generals. but as the Horus Heresy unfolded, they would be one of the first Legions to be broken, and their fractious nature prevented them from ever reforming again.

    As a fan of IH, I've always liked the theory that the Drop Site Massacre was aimed 70/30 at killing Manus specifically. That Horus had done the napkin math and figured if the Iron Hands made it to Terra and stood beside the Imperial Fists and Custodes there was not a force in real space or the warp that would even breach the gates. Dealing a blow to the salamanders and raven guard was great. Vulkan was close to many of the loyal brothers him losing was a morale blow, and Corvus was an X factor that was good to hamstring early, but Ferrus HAD to be dealt with.

    @user-fv5ov2gf5v The "book on him" was written from the perspective of everyone else. It's widely regarded as one of the worst primarch books due to it not having much to do with the titular character. And the short stories are always the same. We learn surprisingly little in spite of them. It's all basic foreshadowing to his fight and death via Fulgrim. And in regards to him dying so quickly, that's not the issue you think it is. The reason we get to the Heresy so quickly is due to GW not knowing how popular the HH was going to get. Once the popularity picked up, they slowed the pace down drastically and have since dragged it out to be way longer than it even realistically needed to be. So it isn't that they couldn't have expanded on him, or lacked the time. They just already moved past him by the time they realized how popular it would be. Unfortunate timing, but it is what it is.

    It's sort of ironic that the Iron Hands were the "most shattered of the Shattered Legions", because they were arguably the least reduced in total number. They had been massive, and from the looks of it much of their strength was, theoretically, still in play. The problem lay in the unwillingness of the Iron Hands clans to work together with each other or with other loyalists. If they could have swallowed their pride and worked with others, they might have remained a force to be reckoned with. If Ferrus Manus hadn't taught them to compete with one another, they might have collaborated in a way that the traitors couldn't deal with. Alas, such is the tragedy of the Iron Hands. Ferrus Manus identifying his own metal arms as weakness was, in many ways, symbolically significant. His legion saw their humanity - their capacity for sentiment and their ability to connect with others - as a flaw to be excised, when in reality it was removing that living touch that made them weak. In trying to remove what made them human, they cut themselves off from that quality that is the true source of humanity's success: pro-social behavior and the ability to come together as a community for a greater purpose.

    I think it's a bit unfair to suggest that Ferrus was to blame for rushing into the Drop Site Massacre without also putting in the context that he'd just been betrayed by his own closest brother in his own ship, who tried to convince him to break his bonds to the Emperor and then murdered his entire bodyguard in cold blood. I'm not saying he's blameless by any means, but he's emotionally and physically wounded at the time by his closest brother, and it's not as if a different commander would have anticipated the betrayal of the second wave or indeed been able to salvage a victory given the odds.

  • @Willehable

    I agree very much with this, it's unfortunate that it's overlooked since Ferrus' and Fulgrim's friendship is portrayed as the strongest out of all the primarchs, which is made even more tragic by how different they are. It adds a lot of depth and emotion to the whole situation which unfortunately I think is explored far too little. In my mind this is the most tragic and interesting interpersonal conflict between the primarchs we've seen, maaaaybe topped by Horus betraying the Emperor but we don't really see much of that anyway so it's mostly speculation. In a more objective or tactical perspective, it also makes way more sense. They even discuss it before actually attacking, it's not like Ferrus just blindly drops down on Isstvan V like a World Eater or Space Wolf. He knows the traitors are consolidating and entrenching their positions, not to mention they will be aware of the loyalists as soon as they enter the system. Not giving them time to shore up their defenses and coordinating, Ferrus Manus takes decisive action and attempts to catch them off guard. You must also remember, the traitors were all depleted, they had scoured their own legions of massive amounts of legionnaires and other forces at Isstvan III already. Waiting, like Corax suggested could just as likely have ended with the battle being way more hard-fought than it could've been, had the other legions not betrayed them but at that point it wouldn't matter much anyway. With the information Ferrus had at his shiny hand, it makes the most sense and is a very reasonable decision.

    Yeah in these overview type videos the details do tend to be lost sadly. Regarding the Fulgrim and Ferrus thing I have begun seen their relationship and what happened to their legions to be a microcosm of both the HH and the aftermath and also why it is so tragic.

  • @deadtotheworld22

    @deadtotheworld22

    @@Fer-De-Lance I don't disagree, but I think there's a fair bit of context missing from the video, especially Ian's claim at the start that 'it was entirely their own fault'. It wasn't, and even if we agree that Ferrus pushed too far forward in the initial stages of the battle, it wasn't an unsalvageable decision until it emerged that the second 'loyalist' wave turned out to be working with Horus. It's an emotional but understandable move, and as much as Ferrus shouldn't have allowed his emotions to rule him, it sat within existing Iron Hands battle doctrine and would probably have worked had the stab in the back not occured.

    @@archmageeldran2567 It's a pity, because ArbitorIan's generally very good at picking up nuance with these videos, which was why it stuck out a bit more. I know he's not a massive fan of Ferrus as a character (quote 'Ferrus Manus was a dick' in his EVERY HORUS HERESY NOVEL REVIEWED when referring to his Primarch novella), and I can understand that he's perhaps not best inclined to be sympathetic towards a Legion and a chapter who can be written as very iffy regarding their views on 'the purity of the flesh' and 'the strong will survive', but I found it a bit...oversimplified and uncharitable, especially as Ferrus is probably reacting in the most human way possible to being betrayed by his closest and best friend.

    What I don't get is that there were a few of the smaller legions in the Crusade/Heresy era who only recruited from one planet yet still managed to have 50,000+ marines in their Legion. Although the Codex Astartes limited Chapters to around 1,000 marines there's no reason why a planet like Vulcan or Medusa could not produce enough aspirants to still produce a similar amount of recruits. So surely Medusa or Vulcan could support 50 or 60 successor chapters from one planet? Does lack of access to the Primarch's DNA reduce the production rate of Geneseed that much?

  • @TheVoltage2

    @TheVoltage2

    Ай бұрын

    @@pitmatix1457It's entirely due to the Iron Hands as a culture rather than any practical limit. The Iron Hands are incredibly exclusionary. Remember, space Marine chapters have near carte blanch control over their home planets. They may allow pulling of the population for others, but that is not required of them by any means. They chose to keep their planet to themselves. Medusa, as well, is a death world in all but name even at the time of the heresy and has only gained more threats since. After one of Abbadon's crusades there is speckles of chaos taint still roaming that they deal with from time to time. As well the Dark Eldar do frequent raids of the planet that the Iron Hands ALLOW because they believe it promotes a stronger more robust population. It probably could support a few more if the Iron Hands allowed it, but the closest in lore to this is the shakily canon Steel Confessors who recruit from off world, but are required to send their recruits to Medusa to show their worth as a means of honoring the geneseed given to make the Steel Confessors.

    Iron Hands can't even maintain a healthy working relationship with other Iron Hands. So it makes sense they wouldn't be that chummy with the Iron Warriors. Who are themselves bitter and unfriendly, led by a bitter and unfriendly primarch. I imagine more than a few times, the Iron Warriors were the "bait" used to lure out forces to the Iron Hands could strike. Iron Warriors were always seen as more expandable than other legions. I've thought about that too, specially with their dichotomy between the IW defining strength as enduring suffering for the sake of the collective legion while the IH defined strength as purging individual weakness within so each IH was the best they could be. But then I realized unlike Dorn, Ferrus would never be the type to nurse a slight or a grudge. Either you weren't worth his time, or he'd "fix" the problem. In this analogy Ferrus is the stern older brother that wouldn't put up with his younger siblings sass.

    Sigmar forbids this. Of all the writings to be found about the Old World, 40k, Blood Bowl, or AoS settings, there is none as worthless to explore as the bloody zoggin' mess that was the End Times. Okay that bit where Sniktch signs the book of grudges was neat but that is literally it.

    I've always pitied the Iron Tenth for devolving into dysmorphic self-loathing. They smack of an organisation that never truly healed from the Hersey; what elements that could function after the loss of Ferrus inevitably became estranged successor Chapters but the core off the Legion saw fit to wallow in their pain. For all their vaunted beliefs that the flesh is weak, claiming to have discarded what remained of their humanity for supposedly superior logic, their rage and anguish is all too apparent, like a festering psychic canker. Yet despite their massive losses, nor truly knowing if Vulkan had survived the Drop Site Massacre for some time the Salamanders had been trained to be self-sufficient, to adapt, endure and embody their Primarch's teachings so that they could continue their duty to the Imperium in whatever capacity they could muster. Even now in 40K, while they seek Vulkan, they don't need him - for they each carry Vulkan's fire in their hearts.

    Love this series :) I just finished "Fulgrim" and the sense I got from the Iron Hands is not their sense of superiority, but they kind of had a chip on their shoulder of thinking other legions were better than them. They seemed the most stoic "King's Men" while every other legion was off winning glory for the sake of glory. And Ferrus thought all legions were equal which is why he continually saw past Fulgrim's ego to still love him.

    Thank you so much for this video friend! The Xth has such a lack of representation in the current lore, that the only way they really have gotten recognition is with content like yours that shares with them a small amount of the spotlight. Personally, it is my belief that this legion in particular can have the best psychological stories and narratives, depicting their struggles with humanity. They are uncompromising and relentless sons of the Emperor, with a lot of qualities that on paper should outmatch a lot of the other legions (No disrespect meant of course), yet many times, even in their own "Primarch" book, they are made to be seen as angry and grudging in their interaction with others, instead of showing their efficiency. The 40k writting team also had a massive opportunity to make Ferrus Manus likeable or composed, so that it would sting even more when he eventually fell. The dynamic struggles of these individuals with their own origins, and their supposed divine purpose, make them a glorious dark and uncomfortable subject to breach. Fleshing them out would make the entire hopeless and bleak components of the universe even more interesting, as well as giving us a great hope for their road to redemption. Apologies for this long text, I believe it necessary to convey the Importance of the sons of the gorgon in the narrative of the 30th and 40th millenium. Have a glorious day everyone. Thank you very much Ian for the video.

    Brilliant video but they updated the lore recently? In the Fulgrim book Ferrus wasn't impaicent he was troubled that Horus and Fulgrim tried to turn him and worked himself into a blind rage trying to prove his loyalty to the other primarchs. Aslo I don't think the masscare can be soley blamed on Ferrus, none of the other loyal primarchs disagreed with his plan and Dorn even ordered him there along with the 4 other traitor legions. I like the Iron hands because they are only one of two legions who actually seemed to "suffer" from the herecy (along side the blood angels). The rest have "issues" but not really. Ultramarines in particaullar are excatly the same in 40k as they were in 30k.

    I think the clever thing about the iron hands fluff is that they probably would have been smooshed on Isstvan anyway, but Ferrus' impetuousness and their own sense of superiority makes that defeat MUCH worse for them, and knocks them out of the war more effectively than any other legion.

    If it wasn’t for the existence of other loyalist legions with incredibly heartless regard for their own allies, civilians and even themselves such as the Dark Angels; the Iron Hands would be outright the worse of them all. In their pursuit of perfection: they became as much a bunch of tools like any other in their tool box.
