Fun fact: In the special edition, Brad Bird added a scene where the Iron Giant has a flashback. The scene depicts other Iron Giant type robots just like it and they are in fact conquerors of other planets throughout the galaxy. Somehow, when he was sent to Earth, something caused him to forget about all of his original mission parameters and this resulted in the story we have now. Brad Bird basically pitched this movie with one sentence, "What if a gun had a soul?"

Bro, I straight up felt like I was losing my mind when you saw the Iron Giant's nightmare sequence, having been a kid that watched this movie religiously on VHS and knows it back to front but has no recollection of that scene at all. Googled it to find out that the remastered version of the film that's available on streaming services has a handful of cut/deleted scenes restored and included. Pretty neat although I'm not sure how I feel about its place in the pace of the story but then again that's probably just nostalgia and a knee-jerk response to change. At the very least, its an excuse to watch this film again :D

Kent was so stubborn, annoying, and loud, because his character is a representation of hardcore nationalist Americans during that period of time (The Cold war). Being so paranoid and reactive only brought problems, just as Russia and the US could've done if any of the two potencies lost their cool.

Kent is the embodiment of the mindset that was at reign back in the later 50"s. People were still recovering from WW2 and still were in this state of absolute fear. Childeren were taught in school what to do when a bomb drops. People (countries) did not trust eachother, each wanted to be as best prepared for another catastrophy as possible, being it earthly (another war) or something from out there (space). So practically, ánything that America did not know of, was immediately labeled as antagonistical/evil. And yes, this is the Cold War. Which is not truely a war but this period of constant fear and distrust.

HI JV. I"m so glad you liked our little film. I was one of the original animators on the movie waaaay back when. You mention at the end of your reaction that you didn't know why the movie didn't do well. The reason is, that Warner Brothers didn't back it. They really didn't know what it is that they had. Literally. And they had all their hopes (and money) in a different animated movie. Which was terrible. So when OUR movie came out, they had absolutely no promotion for it. No one...and i mean no one knew about it. So...ultimately, it didn't do well. The movie quickly gained and found its audience though and became a movie considered by many as one of the best of it's kind in the history of animated movies. And we...everyone who had a hand in its production couldn't be more happier that so many have taken it to their hearts and have had reactions very much like yours. I thank you for all your kind words, (and for showing some of my scenes in your reaction! :D ) All the best to you! And remember..... "You are.....who YOU choose to be.: :)

Oh my god this is one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember loving it as a kid but I was aware that it wasn’t seen as on par with other animated movies at the time so I sort of assumed it wasn’t as good as I remembered. Then as an adult I started watching it again and man it’s even BETTER than I could have realized as a kid. Also, sputnik was basically just a radio transmitter. It was originally supposed to have included a bunch of scientific instruments but since the goal was to simply beat the US to space, it was stripped of all that to make it easier to send out.

i think the reason Kent was so adamant on destroying the iron giant was explained in the laxative shake scene with hogarth: he's a scared man with too much power in his hands (the military connections), so when he saw a threat he was more focused on his own safety than to consider giving a stranger (iron giant) a chance. and that fear escalated and was what ultimately put everyone in danger. also, the original movie never explained the giant's backstory, and it wasn't until the remaster of it that they added the nightmare scene (that had originally been cut). i personally prefer the absence of backstory bc like "it doesn't matter what he might've been before, bc in this life he chooses good and chooses to be superman." plus, the nightmare scene i think clunks the flow of that portion of the movie (talking about souls, then a horrific nightmare, but then casually playing in the scrapyard like Dean wasn't gonna talk about what he saw in the TV to Hogarth)

Here is some interesting facts about the film. The Iron Man: The Musical concept album, released in 1989, is an adaptation of Ted Hughes' story The Iron Man(1968), produced and largely composed and performed by Pete Townshend of The Who. It also stars Roger Daltrey, Deborah Conway, John Lee Hooker, and Nina Simone. The three then-surviving members of The Who (Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Townshend) performed as a group in two songs. A full stage version was mounted at the Young Vic theatre in London in 1993. On the strength of this, Warner Bros. optioned the story for a movie which, with a very different adaptation of the story, became The Iron Giant; Townshend received an Executive Producer credit for the film version. the original story had TIM coming to earth, befriending Hogarth and eventually the whole town, and defeating a giant galaxy sized alien dragon that wants to eat the earth. Brad Bird was in part inspired to make this movie as a memorial to his sister Susan, who died at the hands of her husband by gun violence. His pitch was this: "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?" "Frank" and "Ollie," the two trainmen that Kent interviews after the derailment, are caricatures of Disney classic animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston two animators of classic Disney films and cartoons and two members of Disney's famed Nine Old Men. They also perform the voices for the characters. The Signature Edition(2015) adds two new scenes that were storyboarded for the original film, but were never fully animated until this release. In the first, Dean and Annie have a conversation at the diner right before the farmer sells dean the tractor with the bite taken out of it. In the second, the Iron Giant has a dream in which he leads an army that takes over and destroys a alien world that is seen by dean on the TV , explaining the scene in the final film of him telling Hogarth the giant is dangerous. also In the original, Hogarth finds the Giant's hand watching the TV, showing an advertisement for Maypo Cereal. Director Brad Bird initially wanted an ad for the Disneyland attraction Tomorrowland. Disney would not not grant clearance to use this footage back 1999, when the film was originally shown. Disney allowed the footage to finally be used when Brad Bird directed the film version of Tomorrowland , which was released the same year as the Signature Edition. The one i have is the The Ultimate Collector’s limited Edition number 1,230 of 15,000 that includes: - A letter from Director Brad Bird to the fans - Five Mondo Art Cards - Beautiful 32-Page Book - Collectible Iron Giant Figurine and the Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD Combo Pack

This was my all time favorite movie as a kid, I had it taped on vhs from tv so it had all the commercials from that time on it like that one chef boyardee commercial where the can follows them home as well as skippy squeeze peanut butter, super soaker water guns and slip n slides and got milk. I watched this movie so much growing up and it makes me tear up every time.

I never thought that the plethora of people who didn't grow up watching certain films very much would herald a whole content genre. It's great. ❤ Also, i used an old a rotary phone in the early 2000s during middle school for funzies. I liked the way the handle fit against my head. "I go, you stay. No following." is the equivalent to "I'll be right here" from ET. Gets me every time. 😭 Edit edit: umm. Have i just not watched this through in a long LONG time, or is that dream sequence NEW MATERIAL???😮😮

So there is a deleted scene that shows in the beginning that he is part of a race of killer robots that are sent to different planets and take them over,But due to the iron giant crashing his programming got mixed up and forgot what he was sent to earth for basically giving him permanent amnesia.

Iron Giant is a treasure of a movie - beautiful story and charming animation. Thanks for reacting to it! Other's must have already recommended these movies: Monster House, Paranorman, Chicken Run, The Lego Movie, The Batman Lego Movie, James and the Giant Peach, Horton Hears a Who. If you ever want to try more mature animated movies, Grave of the Fireflies and A Silent Voice tackle heavy, serious topics - both are Japanese films.

I like the name Hogarth. It's an old Anglo-Danish name, a variant of Haggard and Hoggard, or the Dutch Hoogarrd, which can mean a number of things. It can mean a person who etches names into stone and protects it (essentially meaning Word-Guard), or a goat, pig, or sheep enclosure, the nominative Hogarth meaning one who takes care of said enclosure.

Hey, sorry, I didn’t realize that you already reacted to this film when I requested it, along with a few other animated films in one of your other animated reaction videos. My bad! Anyway, this film is amazing. I especially loved the lines about how “you are who you choose to be,” and “souls don’t die.” I didn’t realize until a few years ago that it was people like Vin Diesel, Jennifer Aniston, Christopher McDonald, or John Mahoney (who would later voice Mr. Whitmore in the 2001 Disney animated film, Atlantis: The Lost Empire) that voiced the characters that they did in this film. Anyway, I’m impressed by the incredible amount of heat this film has, and how well done these characters are. Well, thanks for reacting to The Iron Giant. By the way, I’m glad The Iron Giant has had a cult following over the years.

Loved your reaction to this movie, one of my favorite ones from my childhood. That aside, it just came to mind something. When he gets the giant's screw at the end, wouldn't that screw be so heavily irradiated that it could double as a night lamp? And at what year the effects of radiation began to be studied and understood?

I 'm not 100% certain, but from my understanding that scene was in the original production. It had been taken out because it was too scary for children.

It was in the original script/storyboards along with another scene about Hogarths father, but due to budget cuts the scene was never animated. When Warner Bros. greenlit the blu-ray release in 2015 they allowed Brad Bird and some of the films original animators to go back and animate those two scenes for the film. This version was titled as the Signature Edition.

Since this movie came out it has made me cry everytime seeing it. The values and morals this movie presses doesn’t get any better. “You are who you choose to be” you can either be a gun or a savior. Superman or Atomic man. I can’t express how important this movie is… and the reason for the director making it is even more powerful

23:58 Actually, the original storyboard of that scene (interrogation scene) shows that Hogarth was knocked out twice (the first one originally was when he was running towards the door, he screams "Mom!" and he was knocked out by chloroform and then he wakes up, sitting on the chair, and the second one was the original release after Hogarth gives the location of the Giant to Kent Mansley and then he walks behind Hogarth and fools him saying that it was a bad dream). It was too creepy that the first one was scrapped.
