I didn’t get the joke until just now is that in the diner scene, Dean literally had a squirrel in his pants, and it wasn’t until I had recently saw the full clip of the Phineas and Ferb song “Squirrel in my pants”, where the guy said “she literally had a squirrel in her pants” that I realized that the phrase had a metaphorical meaning, but I wasn’t able to figure out what that meaning was until I saw the diner scene again and it all made sense

3:06 9-year-old kid throwing around words like "undignified"! I love how they pulled off writing a smart kid. A lot of fictional smart kids are either essentially adults in child bodies, science nerd boy genius stereotypes, or only smart in one really limited area. But they wrote what a smart kid is often actually like: Still a kid who likes doing normal kid things, and doesn't always have common sense, but is a resourceful and quick-thinking problem solver, outwits Mansley multiple times, and has higher than average verbal expressive skills.

Theory: Dean was in Japan after WW2 as an architect hired by the UN Occupation force to redesign and rebuild the bombed out buildings. My reasons for thinking this are: His aptitude for building scrap metal art. Wears a Taoism smoking gown Knows of Japanese popculture, like Godzilla. His causal nature of working with the US army. I don't know I'll think of more.

This is a seriously good fan theory. I'd imagined he was in Italy (Monte Cassino specifically) as a regular G.I. who'd always done art ("Monuments Men", anyone?). That being said, I can also imagine him in Occupied Japan, and seeing the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. "Gojira" ("Godzilla" to us English speakers) came out in 1954, the events of "The Iron Giant" happened in 1957, so that part of your fan theory definitely fits.

I always loved how Dean never let go of the chair he was sitting in while underwater. XD
“Hey!” “Yeah?” “You’re right in the middle of the road-“ “YEAH?”
The last one is my favorite. His only response bein "yeah?!" Just seems to resonate with me

Pretty weird how Hogarth's only adult friend is a beatnik artist living in a junkyard who ends up getting frisky with his mom later, but I supposed the writers had to throw her a bone somehow. Sidenote: Remember the context, I said only adult friend and the only one he has gets frisky with Mommy Dearest later. The context is already weird and odd, I don't have to make it so. Many of y'all just don't care about the strangeness of the whole thing or you're so used to abnormal junk that calling it weird doesn't even register anymore. Like if you have ask why it's weird, that says more about the junk you've been through you than my plot preferences.

I mean there is a fine line between friend and parent figure when it comes to adult friends when you're a child so. Not that weird. And I agree with the other person, it's only weird if you make it weird.

I just Love the Beatnik Representation. They were the first Counter-Culture movement in America, predating the Hippies and the Punks, but you don't see them at all these days in media.

Supposing that Squirrel Boy’s dad died in WW2 since the movie takes place in the 50s there’s nothing stopping Dean from becoming his official step-dad. And call him Hogarth by night lol.

@@CrossOfBayonne If Hogarth's father did die during a war, it would have definitely been the Korean War. When the Giant's hand is inside the house playing with the TV, you can see a family portrait above the set, presumably Hogarth and his parents, so Hogarth knew his father for at least a brief time. I still wonder about the timeline, though, bc in an interview Brad Bird said that we were supposed to conclude that the father's death was a recent occurrence. IIRC the Korean War ended in 1953, and the movie takes place in 1957 - which is quite a bit of a time span. Maybe Hogarth's father was killed during a routine military training exercise, or something like that, after the war ended.

If Hoghart's dad would have died in WW2, Hogarth wouldn't have been born. The Movie takes place in 1957 and according to Wikipedia Hogarth is 9 Years old which means he was born in 1948. WW2 on the other Hand already ended in 1945, 3 years before Hogarth was even born.

After watching a lot of Stranger Things the past few weeks, and being reminded of this movie… I’ve realized that Jim Hopper from Stranger things is almost exactly like Dean. When shit ISN’T going down… he seems like your average lazy guy who doesn’t take anything seriously. But when shit DOES go down, turns out the dude is a badass.

I can kinda see that? Except Dean is more of the weird but chill artsy type, and sure his place is messy, but he runs his own business, he feeds his creativity and seems content and happy. Hopper, on the other hand, uses a laid-back, can’t-be-bothered demeanor as a front for his unprocessed trauma, loss, and depression. All of which gives him character growth, a great story arch, and a motivation for the choices he makes throughout the show. All that to say, Dean and Hopper are great characters, but I don’t think they’re that similar.

he’s relaxed. I wouldn’t describe Dean as “lazy.” He has a job, makes art, goes out.

Perfect character design, he looks like such a Dean
Dean is my all time favorite animated character.
Man we just all grew up to be Dean. 1. In need of coffee 2. Constantly tired 3. Weird stuff just doesn't effect us
Loved Dean ever since I saw this film as a kid. I always wondered what he read as well since you see so many books in his house. He was always this cool, arty guy with this vibe about him. Can truly recognise that he's influenced my tastes in life even down to my obsession with turtlenecks that started with this movie. As I get older, he just gets more and more relatable.
The amount of love I hold in my heart for this man
i fucking LOST it at minute 3:13 with the car spinning and the fucking music over lay holy SHIT

Meme-worthy one might say.
The irony of this film is 20 years later after watching it I have just realized that for the past 5 years I have worked with a good friend called Dean and he is exactly like this. A mechanic, always tired, endless wit, an art freak, coffee addict and works in a garage next door to a scrap metal dealer. Only difference is he's British and wears glasses. 😂
As a kid I always thought he had Johnny Depp energy. And I still do.
