THE IRON CLAW Movie Review | Zac Efron | Jeremy Allen White | Harris Dickinson

It was one of our most anticipated movies of the season, but "The Iron Claw" ended up being a disappointment for both Christy and Alonso. We have a review of the latest film from writer-director Sean Durkin, whose previous work ("Martha Marcy May Marlene," "The Nest") we've loved. This time he takes on the tragic saga of the Von Erich family, the brash Texas wrestlers who achieved fame in the late 1980s. Starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, Lily James and Maura Tierney. In theaters Dec. 22.

I'd argue that's a very superficial way to look at a character study because you guys underestimate the storytelling prowess of pro-wrestling as a whole and comes out as insulting honestly. It's a pure physical and visual theater, judging a movie by just "things happening" is just mediocrely reviewing it just for the sake of it when the movie primarily focusing on Zac is more than just that. Zac's physical storytelling is probably the best I've seen in years, the only medium of art that provides it is and has been wrestling, and that transcribes well here. The movie is a love letter to that storytelling prowess of pro-wrestling since Sean Durkin is admittedly a fan as well and he understood the assignment. Not saying non-fans of the medium wouldn't find it as compelling since there's much more to meat on the bone with in it, but the review is just flat and pretty repetitive of the movie that you claim to be as such.

I agree. Not to mention they’re stuffing over a decade of events into a 2 hour movie. Cutting characters is to centralize the story to the main character of Kevin (Zac) and do we really need another sad scene in a movie that doesn’t have a real life happy ending. And the Von Erich’s are one note people, they were all wrestling meatheads. These people are reviewing this like it’s a marvel movie and not a biopic of one of the most tragic wrestling stories when the industry itself is dark. They casted the movie as boring because it didn’t hit notes that they personally wanted out of it. What a joke

@@orlandosantiago4063 This review, if made 4 decades ago, about Raging Bull would have been mixed as well since they "didn't focus much on Jake's brother and left out parts in history" when it's often regarded as one of the best character studies of all time. Catering to Hollywood style of dramatizing or undramatizing a real tragedy doesn't and shouldn't take away from what's being shown and represented on screen, taking away Oppenheimer's history of lust shouldn't distract from it being a movie about humanism amidst war of itself, Tim's QANon agenda shouldn't take away Sound of Freedom's anti-sex trafficking advert. This is honestly just as bad as the IGN "The movie is a Family-Drama" criticism.

Also in real life, the brother that wasn’t shown on screen died in a more horrific way than the others. I believe he shot himself just moments after talking to Kevin and his father. Wow, you two! Agree to disagree. I am with Katie Walsh on this one. I thought it was devastating. I was practically sobbing at the end. Great work from the actors, especially Efron and McCallany. The lack of character growth was the point; one of the tragedies of their story is that they never had the chance to grow as people since they were stuck under Fritz's thumb. They didn't get to be whole people; Fritz needed them under control, not growing in to men who could think for themselves. They had no examples of doing better. I also thought they did a great job of recreating the era. Durkin is expert in chronicling fucked up families, biological or found....see MMMM and The Nest. I will say it did pique my interest enough to seek out more info about their stories, so the film's shortness did leave me wanting in that regard. This might have been even better as a limited series.

It’s a bit of a tough spot. This story is a lot to unpack in 2 hours and 10 minutes. However, say if someone had done a six episode miniseries, it might have been tragedy overload. Along with Chris, Fritz and Kevin had to deal with the death of another non-family wrestling prodigy in the promotion (Gino Hernandez), the murder of Bruiser Brody, and just trying to keep their business going when WWF and WCW were bleeding the territorial promotions dry. It’s like what Kiefer Sutherland said when 24 was ending “the audience is only going to go along for so many bad days.”

I think the one-notess of all the characters was very intentional because these people did not have well rounded lives, so how could they turn out to be well rounded people? Obviously I didn't know them, but the lifestyles they've built that their father pushed so forcefully onto them is what gave them their own self-destructive tendencies; their downfalls were the direct result of their "shallow" existences for the lack of a better term. What I'm trying to say is that if their father hadn't made them into people that lack any semblance of balance in their lives and their minds, their story could not have ended as tragically as it did, hence the biopic wouldn't have existed as it does. The characters can be one note because the people were likely one note to a certain degree, at least to the degree that pertains to the events of the story told here

5:47 "Tom Sawyer" was Kerry Von Erich's entrance music in World Class Championship Wrestling. His nickname in WCCW was "Modern Day Warrior" so it fits. In WWF it would get changed to the 'Texas Tornado", which is what the majority know him better as because of the visibility of WWF/E. However, calling Kerry "Modern Day Warrior" played by tiny Jeremy Allan White doesn't really work so I see why that was never a thing in the movie

From a European perspective, it is difficult to take the wrestling thing seriously. Love your work but calling wrestling superficial is pretty ignorant. It is a form of live theater that when great is just as good as a great stage play, but you have to understand psychology. For this, it sounds like they should have focused on one of them. Or made it into a documentary style biographical fiction. Also, wouldn't you expect it to have a lot of 80s Texas cheese, given the topic? Wrestling is full of tragedies so maybe the next wrestling biopic will be better.

Now the condensed story telling does have one good effect. 1:48 - 1:55 That is perfectly what I've been trying to get across to people who ask me why I disliked the film the way I did. Is some of that because I know the true story & know that this story is severely short changing what happened? Sure, that's part of it. I can't turn off my previous knowledge of the real life source material & know that this comes woefully short of that. But even without previous knowledge there wasn't much time given to just feel by any other character except Kevin(Efron) besides that one scene with the mother and Kevin's wife when they were getting ready for Mike's funeral. Also I would've had a problem by movie's end with none of that tragedy changing either parent by movie's end even if I didn't know that in reality it really did. I mean how could it not? However the performers were all really great with the material given to them, I just wish it was better material from someone who I know can do better.

I'm surprised you know The Hart family but not also The Von Erich family. I know they probably didn't wrestle much, if at all, but they were still around the same time frame right? Maybe you got out of wrestling fast as a kid. It happens and if you only like your small group of people as a kid you probably never researched other random wrestling families. I would recommend this film to you as a former fan of wrestling. It is surely more than a 5 of 6 out of 10 film. Easily gets in the 'B' range.

I actually think Sean Durkin felt the need to make the movie more accessible because he's usually a little more observational. The film could have used a more distant approach but it kind of takes the prestige route and inserts too much effort in fleshing out each character instead of just displaying life and embracing presence, allowing the audience to come to their own conclusions. I wished the story or editing of the film would've been told with like a "arms length away approach" kinda how the film "Ida" was edited and shot. would have been way more effective than inserting the standard sad music at the dramatic scenes. Reaching too hard for the feels. The story is tragic by itself. Martha Marcy May Marlene is Durkins best. I'll have to rewatch The Nest. wasn't into it on first viewing. He was the smallest of the brothers at 5 foot 5 while Kerry was 6 foot 2. Jeremy Allen White is 5 foot 7 for the record. Their suicides and why they did it were very similar too so they probably didn't want to show the same scenes twice in the same 30 minute span of the film. It does suck that he got short changed but if anything they should have given him more of a spotlight after the movie ended and they talked about/showed how good Kevin and his extended family are doing. This is a strange movie for me in A way. I loved the first half, completely shattered by the tragedies, felt broken. But wasnt sure the screenplay justified the story enough to earn those moments. Also did they play the lack of emotions as subtlety? The reactions to the first death, then Pomy quietly crying in the funeral, what were those all about? What worked big time were the way the wrestlings were shot. But those too kinda gone colder, specially the last big battle was so disappointing. Din hv enough for the buildup it did. Then, at places the acting felt off. That gun.gifting scene between the dad and Jeremy, the acting felt forced. I think Zac is the only good thing first to last. I hope that softness was right on par with the real character. Cz otherwise, that felt weird too at times. Love the music, energy and the story though. But ultimately a bit underwhelming. Probably din unlove it as much u did. But din love it the way I thought I would. Overall, Durkin's MMM was the best followed by The Nest, which was underrated. This one is a missed opportunity.

Nominate the actors and the script but even then I wouldn't give wins to anything in that movie as of today with everything I've seen. And I've seen the vast majority of the realistic Best Picture contenders in the top 30 at Goldderby minus American Fiction, The Zone of Interest, The Color Purple, All of Us Strangers, The Boy and the Heron, and Society of the Snow. So maybe I'll like those more than The Holdovers or maybe I won't but I will for sure see them all before the Oscars. Yall said their father was one note but Kevin Von Erich said himself there were many fathers in Texas who were like that (me being from Texas, it reminded me of my grandpa) so yeah his father will remain the same no matter in tough situations. They’re all “one note” but with all the BIG story they try to fit in a movie and how good it already is, why is that relevant? They’re wrestlers and brothers who are competitive at becoming the best in wrestling in a movie focused about wrestling and family, if they’re one note then it’s the right note I guess. Even Mickey Rourke, who bulked up a lot for his movie, would have still been on the smaller end of pro wrestlers in the 80s, when all of them were taking steroids. It’s a better result to have an actor get as bulked as they can and use camera tricks than try to teach a non-actor with a wrestler’s body how to act.

I was also disappointed in this movie. It's obvious we're in the vast minority when it comes to this movie and that's fine by me. The fact that Durkin felt his movie couldn't withstand the REAL tragedy of Chris Von Erich in this movie shows you that the Von Erich story should have been a mini-series and not a movie. You simply can't do true justice to this unbelievably tragic story in 2 hours. However I've since come to accept that this movie isn't meant for me and other hardcore pro wrestling/Von Erichs/World Class fans who know this story in depth, its for the casuals and general audiences who know very little and next to nothing & they seem to love it. Which is great, all art is subjective and it's a hit. But I expected more and I felt what I got was a, while well acted, bland, hollow and rushed story. The rushed part kicks in right after the first tragedy, the sudden death of David in Japan. It felt like Durkin just stepped on the gas to speed us through 9 years worth of real life tragedy & cram it into what I believe was 2 years in his story. I came to accept that Chris Von Erich wasn't going to be in this movie and I forgave that, but I'm not giving a pass on the hurried pace of the tragedies seem to take & outside of the ending the only time they seem to stop and feel & let resonate grief was Doris not wanting to wear the same dress for Mike's funeral. That was powerful and I wanted more grief from a mother who buried 4 children in the movie (The real Doris buried 5). Eventhough I didn't love this film like so many it still amazes me that even a quick cliff notes version of the Von Erichs story the The Iron Claw really is, is having such a profound impact on people who knew nothing about this story prior to this movie. As I've been seeing on social media, lots of them are horrified to find out that the real tragedies are far worse than the movie portrayed. I don't think this a bad movie by any means but considering how much I was looking forward to seeing this story come to life on the big screen it was a letdown by film's end

I just saw it Christmas night and I disagree with this video. If you are both disappointed in the film then ok but I'm disappointed in your review so there lol. While it is not perfect by any means it simply doesn't deserve 5-6/10. It probably does help to be a wrestling fan, which I am, although I was born after most of the stuff shown in the film happened. Still, I already knew the tragic story and I did really believe the actor's bond as brothers. I guess knowing what happened to them didn't mean I knew how their parents treated them. I was appalled at how their parents apparently acted towards them when they tried to ever get any emotional support. If you have kids do not act like these parents... Because I knew tragedy was coming around the corner, when they each started dying it was very sad and I think Efron as the main character and last man standing did do a great job. At least I was impressed considering his prior work typically not being even considered for any type of notable award. I do think that eliminating a son was not the best choice but the movie could only realistically be so long. I probably would have preferred an HBO limited series with the same people just fleshed out more but it was released as a movie so what can you do? If it was made how I wanted, people would just complain that it had too many filler plots so again you cannot please everyone. In the end I'm glad the overall RT score is 87% and the audience exit score is 94% which both vastly differ from you two. In the end that is what really matters because that will more likely determine the amount of people who check it out rather than a KZread review that is an outlier.

I think stunted growth was a large part of the commentary on masculinity this movie makes. I also think the movie isn’t just ohhhh masculinity = toxic. The brothers have a deep sincere love for each other that they aren’t embarrassed about. Unfortunately the dad is training them from a young age to always seek his fleeting approval. This stunts them in their development and even them constantly walking around in their undies is probably a reference to that.

I didn't like it. Very slow, boring, surface. Sadly, it just wasn't good to me.

the movie is decent at best, it left out so many details and glossed over the tragedies, to me it wasn't anything special

Talk about a movie I have zero interest in! lol Wow! Professional wrestling? Yikes. Never even heard of the Von Erichs, but thats a result of completely ignoring the sport. Maybe I'll watch when it's streaming. I always appreciate the reviews though. If Christy and Alonso had liked it enough, I would probably add it to my list of movies to see.

There's so much else that's great this time of year. But we are very much in the minority here.

Absolute disservice to this gem of a flick. Am I surprised at your reaction/review? Not at all. As a matter of fact I completely expected you to not see the movie for what it is but what you wanted it to be. Nothing wrong with that in general but you’re so off the mark with this one that I won’t bother watching anything else you have to offer.

Sorry to see you go, but it is totally OK to disagree on movies. Healthy, even.

Growing up during WCCWs heyday I know all about the Von Erich families story, and I also was very upset with the movie acting like Chris Von Erich never existed. It seems like they could have added him without adding too much time. Sure he didn't make an impact on the business like his brothers, but he literally could have just been in the background with a line or two here and there. Kind of surprised the Von Erich family okayed the omission of Chris. I can honestly say I never would have. He was part of the family so he should have been in the movie.

I basically posted this to someone else who was mad at this choice by the film maker and or studio (because do we know who actually had the final call on this?): In a movie with only 2 hours and 12 minutes I feel that it did a decent enough job of combining Chris Von Erich with Kerry Von Erich (played by Jeremy Allen White). I read up on Chris after hearing he was omitted and all I could find was that his life sadly was cut short like most of his other brothers and because he was the smallest of the brothers at 5 foot 5 he didn't make an impact in the wrestling business. So I think they did a decent enough job of combining Chris with Kerry (who was 6 foot 2) because they had Jeremy Allen White who is 5 foot 7 portray Kerry. Both Kerry and Chris' suicides and why they did it were very similar too so they (either the director/studio people in charge) probably didn't want to show the same scenes twice in the same 30 minute span of the film. So yeah you either include Chris in the background for like two seconds then kill him off some other way that isn't accurate or show the same scenes twice and now the movie is longer by like 20 minutes (if the studio even allows that). So there really is no winning and I am not going to dwell on it too much. It does suck that Chris got short changed but if anything they should have given him more of a spotlight after the movie ended and they talked about/showed how good Kevin and his extended family are doing. I don't know why the family didn't insist he was represented there but apparently the family was ok with it so I will leave it at that.

Good film for those new to the story. Likely a letdown for those who grew up with the Von Erichs. The film has Kerry win the NWA title then immediately lose his foot, implying it happened the next day, not two years later. Nothing was gained narratively by starting to compress time or combine events like that. All of those tragic turns didn't feel earned by the end. Mike did return to the ring, after his brain damage, which would have made his father's demands on his sons even more aggregious. His suicide seems to come out of nowhere. Kevin never had that final match with Ric Flair in 1986. World Class had seceded from the NWA before that. Simply telling that, would have better shown Fritz' stubbornness to go at it alone in the business, all the more painful to watch. His promotion went into decline from all the tragedy, loss of talent and inability to compete with bigger promotions like the WWF. A couple lines of dialogue would have gone a long way to show the contrast between World Class at the beginning of their boom and by the end when they sold to Jarret. The film did great by David, but failed to show just how big Kerry really was as a national figure. His character was given so little to do. The movie doesn't answer the question, why was Kerry the natural one to take David's place to win the NWA title? And yes, no Chris Von Erich. No Lance Von Erich, the fake cousin, brought in to keep up with the Von Erich demand at the arenas.

Explain how you could fit all of their lives into a 2 hour and 12 minute movie? Well actually don't even bother because it is not possible. I already said in my main comment here that this would have been better as HBO limited series with like 6-8 episodes but we got the 2 episode version of that so what can you do? Even with 6-8 hours I don't know if you would get the detail you demand from their wrestling careers.
