    De Niro's usually play calmer roles while Pacino is more expressive, but ironically, their most iconic roles are in reverse. Pacino is quiet and brooding as Michael Corleone, while De Niro's Lamotta is an explosive emotional wreck

    The ending to Heat is not dialogue free. De Niro says 'I told you I'm never going back', Pacino raises his eyebrow and nods before saying 'Yeah'. De Niro puts out his hand, Pacino takes it. Powerful, minimal, but not dialogue free.

    You have to watch a Legendary Actor from the beginning of their career to grow old with him. Seeing De Niro in his youth is seeing him at his BEST - in his classic movies like: the Godfather 2, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, the Deer Hunter, Cape Fear. When he was young and a struggling/hungry Actor that’s what made him a Legend. Most of the other movies after that fail by comparison. “The Irishman” finally attempts to capture some of that De Niro acting magic that made him a famous actor (one of the best). Same goes for Al Pacino or Meryl Streep - you don’t skip over the “Godfather” or “Sophie’s Choice” and jump to them as older Actors, they were oh so brilliant in their youth. Hopefully, “the Irishman” will encourage a whole new generation to go back and watch these Actors in some of their classic movies - that’s what I did with all the great films actors, way before my time. Enjoy!

    Yes. What happened to original movies like The Godfather, The Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind, Psycho, and Ben Hur? Oh nvm they're all based on books. But non-franchise movies will not displace the franchise-based landscape of the blockbuster world. that's fine though because beyond the blockbusters there are plenty of great films like Birdman, Under the Skin, Whiplash, Nightcrawler, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Sicario, Ex Machina, The Handmaiden, Moonlight, Hell or High water, Phantom Thread, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Get Out, Baby driver, Logan Lucky, Hereditary, Isle of Dogs, Coco, Dunkirk, Lady Bird, mother!, Detroit, Okja, Roma, You Were Never Really Here, Blackkklansman, Sorry to Bother You, Wind River, etc And then within the franchises there are tonnes of great sequels/reboots like Blade Runner 2049, Logan, Mad Max Fury Road, Trainspotting 2, etc. Overall I have no problem with the current state of cinema. Auteurs like Scorsese can continue to make great films with even the added ease of companies like Netflix helping them to achieve their vision, and we can also receive indie gems from lesser known filmmakers as well big blockbusters as part of franchises too. There are original movies, movies based on real life, based on fictional novels, based on comic IPs, based on established movie franchises..there's everything out there. Overall I have no complaint.

    1.) The Irishman is based off a book. 2.) Even if it weren’t, I’d hardly call it original. De Niro, Pchino, Pesci, and Scorsese make a mob epic that spans the 20th century. They’ve done that how often in the past? True, these movies are not the same, but in spirit, what really sets The Irishman apart from Goodfellas or Casino?

    I'm unsure of what you mean with energy and something to prove. As great as the best actors are, there's still a limit that can be imposed on their performances depending on the script. So sure they would've had more to prove in the 70s, but if the characters, the scene, the dialogue and the movie wasn't good..then all that energy would've gone to waste. I think the only way we would've got Mean Streets/Taxi Driver era De Niro alongside Serpico/Dog Day Afternoon Pacino would've been if Robert was cast as Sonny in the Godfather. But thankfully Robert was cast as young Vito Corleone. So I'm glad with how things turned out. Too many variables to romanticise with a hypothetical early 70s film with the two of them teamed up.

  • @franjes9999

    @franjes9999

    Kaizer.Beatz yeah you’re very right Robert as Sonny would’ve been really interesting but even they only share like 5 scenes together and I think James Khan was an absolutely perfect cast in that role. De Niro went for a few roles apparently he looked into being Michael too but they opted for Al Pacino instead that would’ve been extremely interesting Ultimately what we got I wouldn’t change

But for me the surprise is the new face: Stephen Graham as Tony. I was first blown away by Graham as Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire, he plays Mafioso so well that i think he has the potential to be a part of the new generations Pacino or Pesci with the explosive but then thoughtful demeanor.

    it’s too bad that almost no (good) project involving both of them came up during their golden days. I disagree on Righteous Kill , it’s not a bad movie because of the team Pacino/De Niro being often on screen, but despite of it. The story is lame, even they couldn’t save this movie. Also in Heat, personally I think the fact that during their dialogue their faces are never shown together is made to underline that they are very similar and almost interchangeable, and that they could have the same kind of conversation with themselves in a mirror

    Some things in life require space to make them closer together. Which sounds counterintuitive, I know. When it’s visual it makes sense. Obviously in movies this makes sense but in real life this, too, is important. A great anonymous quote goes something like “Regain respect through absence.” When people are left with a thought of you and not the actual you over time, this leads to a more gripping feeling, as if they miss you.

    Nah. Pesci is fine but his filmographies not nearly as great as the other two's. He only blew up by chance when he was suggested to Scorsese for Raging Bull, whereas De Niro & Pacino had been legends since the early 70s. And then after that Pesci was mainly typecasted as the short angry funny man in Goodfellas, Casino, Home Alone, Lethal Weapon, My Cousin Vinny. etc. JFK and Once Upon a Time in America are often forgotten though :(

    I agree. Especially when you look at De Niro's Imdb acting credits (120 actings roles) vs Pacino's 60 acting roles both over a similar period of time. Both are great actors for sure, but there's no doubt over who's career was more concise. Although Al being in Jack & Jill should've made up about 30 bad movies worth of bad karma, lol.

    De Niro is a legend but his filmographies not nearly as concise as Al's. look it up on imdb: Robert De Niro = 120 acting credits, Al Pacino = 61 acting credits. It's a shame Al Pacino did Jack & Jill though. If not for that his filmography would've looked a lot more consistent. Regardless. The bickering and comparing of them is stupid. all have their own idiosyncracies and pros and cons and their own image and type of roles. ranking actors is pointless because everyone's tastes and what we look for is different.

    The way this is so put together is why I looked forward to The Irishman for so long, a decade's wait. And perhaps I hyped myself up for too long, because I was let down a bit by the overall result. Don't get me wrong, the best parts of the movie, for me, are when De Niro and Pacino are together, but the film felt lacking in depth.
