The Irish Wake: A Query | THE BRENDAN OPTION 035

"I think we Irish particularly are very proud of the fact - rightly - that we have held on to some ancient customs that are in fact very healthy, contrary to all modern usage."
Join Fr. Brendan Kilcoyne for episode 35 of 'The Brendan Option' where he discusses the nature of the Irish wake.

A veritable Tour de Force during these sinister times. Far from ruining my evening, it has renewed my determination to embrace this repressed fear of the unknown with the honesty of the humbled. But, of course, you knew that, didn't you? I'm starting to feel like Gobnait O'Lúnasa when he mulled that "the most decadent days of the Roman Empire are beginning to look like Outlook".

I like a simple funeral, asking God to have mercy and forgiveness on the soul who has died. Today funerals seem to forget that part, and only celebrate the deceased life as if it's a given they will go to Heaven. I don't like this new thing of bringing items up to the alter that were of interest to the deceased.eg. cigarettes, cards, hammer etc., I find it ridiculous. When a person dies we should be praying that they go to Heaven . We should say the rosary for them. It's good to grieve and have loved ones around us. It should remind us how fragile our lives are . We are in this world but not of it. In my opinion , if we are lucky most of us may go to Purgatory. If that's the case, we should have Masses said and pray for our loved ones that by the grace of God they will be allowed to enter Heaven. People seem to think we all go to Heaven automatically. Priests should give more sermons on this subject. Thankyou.

Yes I agree with you. People do think that all will go to heaven. You hear celebrities, you hear it in films etc., when a family or friend dies they say I know they are in heaven looking down. Yet these people are atheists or of other religions, also Catholic's that went away from their faith before they died, amazes me to hear it. I was a lukewarm warm Catholic but after having, as I call it "an illumination of conscience," I'm now a practising Catholic. You see back a few years ago I had my first dose of chemo and almost died, but through God's great grace love and mercy I didn't, because if I had died back then I was gone straight to hell. It was a awake up call for me. The Catholic faith is the one true faith, it's the church of our Lord Jesus Christ. One needs to be a practising Catholic before one dies. I've heard that a lot of lukewarm Catholic people repent on their death bed, which is wonderful.

It’s the priests who are allowing pagan objects to be brought , secular music to be played and poems and eulogies to be performed. People want these because the symbols and rubrics of the funeral mass mean nothing to them so they have to bring their own meaning to it

You are so right....the new funeral Mass is based on a huge assumption that the person in the coffin has tap danced into heaven full of the odour of sanctity complete bypassing the four last things( death judgment heaven and hell) It is a celebration and eulogy of that person that belongs in a memorial service...the Reqium as it was was the gathering to humbly ask for Gods mercy on the person and to combine that plea and offer it to God the just judge with the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord present on the altar at the hands of the priest in black vestments that remind each and everyone there of their mortality
