Must mean a different thing in North America. In Ireland it means: "Bye" "Bye" "Yeah bye see ya later" "Later" "Okay bye seriously" "Yeah bye we'll talk later" "Yeah bye" "Bye" "Byeee" and it can go on a while. Another variation is saying bye but you or the other person adding "oh wait you hear what happened today" or "we meeting up later" and then the awkward multiple goodbyes. It may be a thing elsewhere, but I noticed it a lot growing up in Ireland.
