Uhmmmm... the point is not the intelligence behind the cult that bothers, I think, but how realistic it can be. It's difficult to believe someone would devote themselves to the point of commiting (forced) mass suicide when the cult does not provide what they think they need. The movie gives you ideas about what the cult is about but fails to make it relevant to the plot and characters.

@@iamslf I know about Him Jones and his cult but I haven't seen the movie you mention, so I don't know if it's done properly. But yeah... Jonestown is a good example of people buying into a cult and commiting to it to the point of mass (forced) suicide. So... for the story in The Visit to make sense t they could've shown how their lives changed because of the cult (pattern of speech, avoiding cuss words, dressing modestly, living simply, or having their house covered in art propaganda, etc) and shown their belief and loyalty to their leader for example saying Jim Jones says: blah blah blah, taking him and his word and perfect and law, saying this a LOT, or getting super angry when leader gets insulted. And if they had a conflict of heart in the mass suicide, they could've shown guilt or fear or anxiety during the dinner, have the female cult member have a mini break down in the bathroom and then pull out a photo of the leader or a symbol of the cult as a talisman to calm down. All these things and other ideas can help the audience understand how critical the cult is for them, how unbalanced they are because of the teachings and how close to mass suicide they are getting... so it doesn't feel out of left field. And the couple could've mentioned how they got into it thanks to a friend in the neighborhood, which could explain the other red lanterns in a more believable light. There's not much "showing" and even less "telling" in this movie... and whatever is shown or told is not enough to make the audience believe what they are seeing, so there's no emotionality involved, no fear for the protagonists, no compassion or hatred towards the cultists, no anxiety over the red lanterns... nothing... a great failure in a movie

Not necessarily. The party wasn't "over" in that sense, they didn't even have dinner yet. She left because she was uncomfortable with a game, not a natural "welp, I gotta go pick up my kids thanks for having me" kind of way. That's hardly the *most* unrealistic thing in the movie.

  • @beau4588

    @beau4588

    4 жыл бұрын

I think that was very realistic. For just her to leave. It was a dinner party and people were getting reunited with everyone. Yes it had gotten weird but people give eachother the benefit of the doubt and I mean they were all close, its not like they were not going to try to understand or make the house guest comfortable and understood. Will was just seeing through the bullshit and was staying cause trauma, protecting his friends, proving a point to his ex and and and so why would he leave? This isnt a "I would've done this" movie, It's a "I was there in the moment movie" which is more honest imo.

I really enjoyed the movie though. It's supposed to be about grief and how the idea of "it will all end soon" can be really soothing to someone who lost the will to live, the boy's death wasn't supposed to be a plot point, but a device for the grief. You can see this movie in many ways among them: about people not accepting their loss; about seemingly happy people harboring immense pain to a breaking point; about how vulnerable people can be while in pain. The why bring innocent people to the murder/suicide party is similar to how people kill their loved ones before killing themselves "in order to protect them". The movie is basically about people avoiding facing their emotions, and how it destroys everyone around them.

This movie isn’t as straight forward as you think it is. when it comes to why they would kill their friends even if they didn’t outwardly come out with some sort of past tragedy. that is foreshadowed at the beginning of the film when will hits the coyote, it’s a mercy killing. To these cult members everyone is suffering rather they believe so or not so they invited all of their closest friends as a mercy killing to go to the other side with them. they thought they were being good friends. And everyone in the neighborhood wouldn’t have to go to Mexico just to be a cult member that doctor had made numerous videos and a lot of the people in the neighborhood could’ve seen those videos and had been brainwashed either by wills ex or other people who had bought into the cult these aren’t crazy leaps to take to enjoy the film you just have to pay more attention

Its great to see this comment. This is also reiterated by the fact that they intend to kill everyone AND themselves, plus there is a dialogue between David and Eden (?) where she gets cold feet and they talk about free from the pain. It is also backed up a little by real cults, where people get so convinced that they are following the “right” path and their notions are true, that they commit mass suicides.

so you are happy with the thought that a whole neighbourhood could be easily convinced so murder their close friends "to free them"... And not one of these people to call the cops when they don't want to kill their friends? A lot of logic needs to go out the window for this to work. Yes the coyote scene is neat but the movie falls apart

I don't think that the cult is suppose to make sense. Most cults don't, anyway. Also, with the whole neighborhood having these cultists, I think its very probable that it was a slow spread of the cult's influence. Perhaps the occupants of one household heard about the cult and ventured to mexico. And once they returned, they spread the word. And slowly more and more people are duped into being converted by the cult. The film never implies that this was some kind of over night thing. It's really not that crazy when you think about it.

I really liked this movie. I feel like the plot contrivances brought up are easily explained away. I also feel like if you watch the movie knowing that there is going to be gore you probably won't like it so much. I watched it completely blind, and was intrigued by the plot, never quite sure what was going to happen. I also really liked the tone, I know from a certain perspective it feels disorganized or like there is a lot of filler stuff that doesn't get used or doesn't make sense, but for me it made it feel more like a realistic gathering. I've never been to a party that wasn't at least a little bit awkward, even among close friends. The dialog and character interactions during the party reminded me a lot of Convergence, another movie I really love.

You speak the truth. I also believe it was supposed to be reminiscent of a realistic gathering. The main priority of the cultists was to have a good time with everyone and then peacefully kill them while covering up the little suspicions of Will. Obviously, this would lead to generic dinner conversation and anecdotes from the party-goers. A lot of subjects were “throw at the wall” because the characters were just being people. I enjoyed it.

I got the impression that Eden and David didn't invite Eden's friends because they had grieved over someone they had lost. I thought that inviting and killing all of Eden's closest friends was the only way she would go though with the Invitation in the first place. Think back to the video the group was shown and remember that Dr. Joseph asked the dying woman who she was excited to see. He told her something along the lines of, "You're going to meet them soon." Had Eden gone through the Invitation, none of her close friends would have been dead. Therefore, she couldn't meet them during her transcendence. However, had she died with all of them, she could be with her loved ones in the afterlife. Now, I'm not sure how well this gels with the idea that the whole neighborhood having their own suicide dinner parties, but at least with the main group, I believe this was the motivation for bringing them together.

Because it wouldn’t be a movie, that’s the whole plot. The whole “what if you didn’t leave”. In this movie they tried to showcase that with the fact they didn’t want to leave since they’re all close friends. Claire left so it’s not like no one left.

Add to the fact that they know these people are in a cult and anyone would be wanting to get out of there. Also yes Claire left, which only highlights as to why no one else left. They all were just as freaked out by what happened. If the writers couldn't figure out better ways to stay than "because it wouldn't be a movie," then we have a problem.

Some people just don't like how long it takes for shit to go down, which is understandable. I'm not a huge fan of ultra slow burn horror movies, but I think this one was done exceedingly well (also not ULTRA slow burn, despite what people say). I love this movie a ton. It's one of my favorite movies of the past decade and that's saying something considering in the past 2 months alone I've watched over 140 horror movies. It seems that the people who love this movie REALLY love it and the people who dislike it REALLY dislike it. I'm ok with that tbh.

I believe most of the friends met at a grief support group (it’s briefly mentioned near the beginning) and they developed a deeper friendship from there. As for the the whole neighborhood being involved, it’s not clear how long they’ve been back from Mexico, but they could’ve “recruited” some of their neighbors, but it is mentioned that other people who do not know them were had also “accepted the invitation”, so it’s seems to be more like Scientology is in Hollywood. Not everyone is a part of it, but a surprising amount are! If Scientologists decided to perform this kind of thing, it would have quite a few houses with red lanterns. Then pertaining to the suicide, that second message from the cult leader sounded as if he had just come to the realization that a mass suicide was in order and the decision of individual members to take their lives was accepted and supported before then.🤷🏻‍♀️ Over all, I did like the movie. I do want to know what happened to Claire when she decided to leave early and who the people really were who came to the door (the ones David said “were kids looking for a party). Other than that, I think it was pretty well done. Oh.. and as far as the locks go, there are deadbolts that only have a keyhole on each side and need a key to lock and unlock it… and I believe that back yard had a sheer faced cliff on the other side of the low brick wall, so they couldn’t have gotten out from the back yard.

Wow. It's amazing how two people can see the same movie and have 2 completely different experiences. This movie had me on edge 93% of the time. Partially because of the slow burn. The moment David locks the door...it's like the pilot is lit. When Pruitt follow Claire outside and then he takes her out of sight to "talk", I think I actually whimpered. I didn't find the conversations asinine. We heard a large imposing socially awkward man confess to killing his wife. There were uncomfortable intrusive kisses. We watched the hosts lovingly play a video of an assisted suicide in a cult ceremony. Crazy stranger chick Sadie is showing Will her bits in a way that should have had a subtitle: "I'm here to make trouble". Then Eden slaps one of her guests for no reason. The underlying vibe, before we even know what's going on, of Eden's constant low level panic that everything hinges on every single moment of the night...but desperately holding on to a smile and lithe movements feels like a pressure cooker full of candlewax, holy water and pig's blood. OMG the fucking message from Choi about having been at the house an hour ago, but apparently never making it inside. Ah! Yeah. This was an 8 or 9 on the psychological horror scale. I really liked it. You know...this group of people, without the tragedy that tore everyone apart, would be a set of healthy, young, beautiful, financially independent professionals living in Beverly Hills having a delightful dinner party with friends and fun...I'm wondering if you not really connecting with the movie is because you feel like maybe wouldn't fit in with that kind of group.

Besides if you actually wanted to dissect the movie you'll see that there's lots of hints that show to different interpretations of what the boy really is or if anything is even real. Plus countless amounts of symbolism with different shots in the film especially the opening scene. Like someone else said, they're not for anyone especially the ones who don't wanna appreciate good film work.

They normally don't make sense. Trying to apply our logic and reasoning to deranged cults is silly because by the very definition of cults, it doesn't make sense. So that's why I can look over some of the issues you mentioned. Now it is true that most cults typically do stick to their cult members and don't draw random strangers in like that. But if you really looked, I'm sure you can easily find cults that did indeed do that to people that weren't members of their cult.

I didnt find the movie slow nor boring, I mean it obviusly isnt something youd expect if you went in for some horror cliché with lots of deaths and suspense music, but if you watch closely every detail in the movie is crafted so that the interactions between the caracteres become more and more uncanny, it gets uncorfomtable since you know Will feels the same as you, but theres nothing he can do about, he cant just go because he isnt completely sure that something bad is going to happen, but he also does not feel safe and for good reason. Like when he gets upset because David locked the door and took the keys, when the bald guy says hes going to move his car cuz he parked in front of claire, and one of my favourite scene, the dinner, Will just watches how everyone is eating and drinking and he knows that it could all be poisoned, then he looks at his friends faces and they are so weird because no one wants to be there. You just want Will and Kira to get the fuck out throught most of the movie. At some point i started thinking that maybe all of them were already converted as well. It is a weird movie but a great one too

Lol that happens with me all the time as I’m sure it does with other people it isn’t like you solved the hardest of algebraic equations.. figuring out it was most likely gonna be a cult. If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck it’s probably a duck bruh

I was fine with the movie, even if it was unimaginative ... but the whole lanterns in the whole neighborhood seemed like a shoehorned twist to create some sort of grand ending

Foundflix my man, what the hell. Your usually so spot on with movies that to see you miss this one so completely is astounding to me. I'm sorry you didn't like the movie, but that just means to me that you don't deal with grief the same way as the protagonist or haven't dealt with similar grief, idk which because I don't know you personally. 80% of the things of this movie relate to grief and depression. When he's sitting at the table and screaming to his gf and she doesn't hear him shows what it's like when your that depressed, it feels like you can't communicate with anyone. Even the fact that we barely know the friends names, shows what it's like. They become background noise in your life. Even the house, no signal showing how isolated you feel, the backdoor being removed showing how even something familiar isn't the same anymore. Her joining the cult is actually just a form of denial that comes with false acceptance. The red cult lights in the end are meant to represent how someone's pain can grow out and affect those around them. I watched this movie not long after my father passed away and it was really easy to relate to both the protagonist and his ex-wife, and to see how what was being presented mirrored myself.

Beautifully put. I showed this movie in my film class and MANY of my students caught the parallels to grief and depression. I am shocked FoundFlix missed the artsy attempt in the movie.

Oh so you know everything about his life? You know what he's been through? What he's experienced? What he's lost? What grief he may or may not have gone through? You're comment can be summed up as "You didn't like it because your too stupid to understand it." People got it. It was just boring and slow for a lot of us. We were just waiting for the pen to drop. Would have been better had there been no obvious signs that people will die and instead was a psychological drama about a man's grief. No cult, no murder, no weird dialogue that made the last 25 minutes extremely pradictable.

@@rickywilliams1586 I literally said I don't know his life nor did I say he's stupid or anything like that. Maybe lay off the steroids and chill long enough to read the comment all the way through. Also saying a lot of people is a pretty vague term to use considering one person's definition of a lot isn't gonna be the same as another's. Since it's sitting at around 70 percent on rotten tomatoes audience score I think your in the minority of people.

I swear, the whole time I said "omg just leave." I knew it was over when the guy from Gothika appeared. The weird girl gave away most it. But yeah. I agree. Weird slow dysfunctional burn.
