The Invisible Universe Of The Human Microbiome
The next time you look in a mirror, think about this: In many ways you're more microbe than human. There are 10 times more cells from microorganisms like bacteria and fungi in and on our bodies than there are human cells. But these tiny compatriots are invisible to the naked eye. So we asked artist Ben Arthur to give us a guided tour of the rich universe of the human microbiome.

I love the animation! I especially loved when the little bacteria riding the other bacteria-with a war cry-charged bravely into battle. Epic! A great dramatization of the ceaseless work our body does to protect us against all the shit we fill ourselves with.
Absolutely brilliant video - don't know why but child-like animations always make science more fun. Thanks, NPR,
I really like this concept of edutainment, it really helps put these complex ideas into a more digestible form of understanding. Excellent for people of all ages.
Art and science - a very beautiful animation about the human microbiome. Very much worth your 5 minutes :)
now if microbiology were only taught like this in class, I wouldnt have gottan a C ;)

Woow this was the best animation I ever saw on microbiome... thank you!
This is amazing. I learned a lot, and I'm so happy that there are outlets making cutting-edge science understandable for the general public - even children. Such nice animation, and what a creative way to interpret it too!

Wonderful images. Scientifically accurate. Just the new kind of education we all need to learn.
Excellent graphic illustration to simplify the comprehension of just one small area that reveals the complexity of 'life'.
Not only was it legit, it was enjoyable to watch. Good work, great for kids too.
I LOVE this animation! Beautifully done, congratulations!
Beautifully animated!!! If all biology topics were taught in the form of KZread animations, everyone would want to major in biology!
We are more connected to the universe than previously theorized and we are not separate or above anything else than once believed.
This is the best animation I have ever seen, Sooo good! Thank you. Please keep making biology interesting & fun.
Adorable, beautiful illustrations/animation! Worked perfectly with the audio.
Wow! The tiny universe within each of us that determines our level of health . So well done!! Thank you!! 🎉
I use this video to help educate patients as well as to my college Medical Anatomy and Physiology classes, as a link. Great work.
This was absolutely fantastic, my son loved it. Thank you!
This was so adorable!! I'd watch these animations all the time!
Absolutely loved this work, and have already forwarded it to several of my contacts.
What a beautiful video of Microbiology 101. Something that some MD had forgotten these days. I wish it would be available in Spanish also.
That beam of destruction from the good microbe was epic. Great art and animation.
This video is fantastic on so many levels! Thank you so much for the upload
Absolutely amazing to see that inspiring and beautifully created!
Cant thank enough for this video. I have incorporated it in my lecture.
That was wonderful. Very informative.... makes me understand a few of the ideas better.
Whoever made this video deserves a medal
Bravo! Encore!! A+++ So why are people silent on the likes? Possibly because we still don't want to know that we have 17 trillion creepy crawly invisible things all over us? Oh well, medicine has not always been "tasty". And this piece presents an unsavory subject in just the right amount of comic realism. PS: We are working on a "polymicrobial bacteriostat" an antibiotic that equally stops all species of bacteria from growing, even superbugs, and does this across the board according to their species. Thus, the microbiome is preserved without killing all of anything and the bad bugs are capped from growing into infection. So far so good. As we complete our research we will need some "infotainment" as the information cannot be understood without an awareness of the details to set up the story. John Matlick

John, how are you doing these days? I just found out about this video... it explains a great deal. When you say 'we' as in completing 'our' research, do you mean you are a microbiologist or?? I appreciate your comment and hope you're still hanging around KZread.
Benjamin Arthur, thank you for this lovely animation! Thanks to everyone for making this video!
An excellent explanation of the subject. And quite entertaining to view, in fact.
Kudos to the artist... Love those animations. ❤️
OMG..this video is too good..LOVE it! Thanks!!!
I cant believe how good this video is
This is a wonderful teaching tool. Excellent
Aw man what an awesome way to help us think of our microbes! :D
beautiful illustration of what the human microbiome actually is!
4:18 Aww that little guy is so cute!
That was a lovely presentation, thank you.
4:17 Makes me want to take prebiotics by the bottle
I absolutely love the cartoon! What an adorable whimsical world with prehistoric vibes!
The animation in this video made it a lot of fun to watch. hopefully there are more in the pipeline like it.
Amazing work!!!
Informative, creative, and beautiful.
This deserves more views.
Love the animation! very educational and fun to watch :)
This was so cute! I really wish this was a movie.
i just came back here because this is the first video that i watched in youtube and the presentation is beautiful. 😄😄👏👏👏
I was assigned this for homework im lowkey enjoying this.
It is closer to 3X as many bacteria as our cells. A student of mine showed me the original source where the authors suggested it MIGHT be 10x. This became known by us scientists and teachers as fact. More recent data suggest their numbers are much lower.
Wow, something actually good from NPR
Amazing visual and audio explanation.
Thank you Benjamin Arthur for such a great animation!
Great job NPR ;) Very nice summary of the field.

and epic as well! :)
The 100,000,000,000,000 microbial cells and 10,000,000,000,000 human cells fun fact is a very loose estimate, I heard somewhere that it was more like 35,000,000,000,000 human cells and 40,000,000,000,000 microbe cells (except for after you pooped).
Very Awesome video! Keep em coming!
Adorable animations and really got your point across.
Incredible animation!
Wonderful documentry
Benjamin Arthur you legend.
Now I want to know how to take care of all my little good microbes!
Beautiful :)
This is the neatest thing! My biology teacher showed me this in class the other day.
Friends, this is why masking and hand sanitizing is not good for us!
This looks and sounds like a Ted-Ed but waaay better. Keep up the good work!
I loved the animation :)) This video was amazing!
AWESOME explanation!
What a great video! Thank you very much!
