The murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard by a serving Metropolitan Police officer who abducted her as she walked to her home in south London in March 2021 was a watershed moment for the nation. It brought to the fore the devastating issue of male predators within the country's police forces and highlighted the extent of violence against women and girls in British society - an issue recently declared a national priority alongside terrorism and organised crime.
This documentary looks at the Met’s investigation into Sarah’s murder, how this devastating crime unfolded and its impact - told by those closely involved in the case from the outset, many of whom are speaking on camera for the first time, including the senior investigating officer, Katherine Goodwin, the prosecuting barrister, Tom Little, and Sarah’s local MP, Bell Ribeiro-Addy.

This thing about CCTV is important. its only kept for a very short time, like a day or two on buses. Wayne Couzens must have counted on this: he probably thought that when someone rang the police to report Sarah missing, they would be told that a person has to be missing for a certain number of days before a "missing person" report can be filed. By the time that period of days was up, the CCTV would have been lost. I think he was counting on that happening. No other way would he have been so brazen. Thank God the police officer who took the call from Sarah's boyfriend was a woman. Imagine if it had been a misogynistic man.

A bus probably only passes that spot every 10 or 15 minutes so it would have been partly luck it captures the moment he approaches her. I think the police would still use cctv and phone data to find the last point she makes it too. One line of enquiry would be then check all the cars regs on CCTV in that area at the time. They'd have traced the hire car to him, seen he lives by Dover not London, found that suspicious, probably spoken to him, found out he didn't have an alibi at the time of the murder. But proving he was the killer may have been difficult. Presumably though they would have found her DNA in the hire car, very hard to get rid of. At that point they'd have enough to charge him? Getting away with an abduction and murder in a city with so many cameras is very unlikely these days. In the countryside it's a bit different because of a lack of CCTV but there's also no crowds to blend into so every person you see is more memorable. There was one unsolved case though I saw recently where a woman in her 50s was walking her dog in a nature reserve Paxton Pits very early in the morning 29 June and was beaten by an attacker. Police basically had no leads because no witnesses and no cctv and no fingerprints or DNA. That's probably the sort of location a killer would want. Even the killer of Julia James though was caught because he was seen acting weird in the area before and after. You've just got to remember your chances of being abducted and murdered in a busy city are extremely low, these events are very rare. Being followed, harassed, maybe having your phone stolen I think are more common problems maybe in London but murder thankfully is very rate, murder by a stranger even rarer.
