The invading wild boars: What is really happening in the USA?

The situation of dealing with wild hogs in Texas is proving to be a significant challenge. Wild hogs, also known as feral pigs, are causing numerous issues for both agriculture and the environment in the region. With rapid reproduction rates and the potential to damage the soil, wild hogs have become a major threat to local crops and ecosystems. Regulatory agencies and farmers are closely collaborating to develop effective control strategies, including the use of night hunting networks, motion-sensor trapping models, and enhancing community awareness of the risks posed by wild hogs. However, the issue still requires concerted efforts and innovation to address effectively.

Lets do some math. It was said at the beginning of the video that each wild pig costs about $300 per. Shortly after, it is said that they cost Americans $1.5billion in damages a year. Later in the video, the number of pigs is stated as 9 million. 9 million multiplied by 300 is 2.7 billion. Either, there are less pigs than stated, the damages are more than reported (over all) or the amount of damage each pig does was not accurately calculated. Did I miss something?

I once envied that there were so many wild boars in the USA. I am a hunter in Poland. I don't envy it anymore. Poland is divided into hunting districts which are leased to hunting clubs. The association in which the damage occurred is responsible for any damage to farmers. A small field of corn can result in huge losses. We use electric fences, but it is still difficult. Wild animals roam around in broad daylight where there are garbage bins. There you can only scare them away. Hunting only slightly reduces the population. This is a fight against windmills.

Same with foxes here in the Netherlands at the moment. Levels of protection were exaggerated and the number one cause of the near extinction of native birds like our godwit species.. At least we have the wolves and eagles back. Meanwhile all native insects, birds and wild plants are seriously struggeling. (agglomeration/intensive agriculture/overpopulation/saturation of nitrogen compounds in nutrient-poor habitats/climate/environmental changes) Btw. We’re dealing with lots of invasive plants like Fallopia japonica and many waterweeds recently.. parasites in coniferous wood from southern Europa. A complete invasion of American crayfish (literally everywhere), weird Chinese crabs, sunfish, we have our first viable population tropical treefrogs at the coast (probably dumped by individuals) immense populations of ring-necked parakeets, mediterranean arthropods and even flamingos in the middle of winter. Also mammals like American gray and Pallas squirrel that displace the native red ones with viral diseases up to even tropical flatworms from bags of potting soil. Our first praying mantisses and stick insects are pioneering.. Every month there’s new invasive species lol. We’re definitely in some sort of weird shift in Europe.

Maybe for a small farm, but on industrial scale farms, not likely. One of the hardest parts of dealing with them is the fact that the pigs travel in such numbers that you'd need a whole pack of guardian dogs just to keep them deterred.

Christopher Columbus never set foot on the North American continent, he spent most of his time in the Caribbean, he landed in Central and South America. And look Christopher Columbus did not discover America, or the Caribbean, the existence of islands to the west was long known, Columbus followed a map given to him by someone else. Christopher Columbus was the first individual to make the trip with the backing of a King. If you read the journals of the voyages it will become apparent to you Columbus was petrified of not finding gold for the Spanish King and Queen.

Interesting to see as we have plenty of wild boars in Europe and, at least in Switzerland, no large predators to keep them in check. But Hunters are managing quite well to keep them in check for the most part. But they do a lot of damage, a field looks like freshly plowed if a pack of them went through. Probably the lower population density in the US gives them more space to develop in comparison to the EU. And WTF is up with the froglegs at the end of the video.

Interesting that its mentioned that the pigs can learn to avoid aircraft but it wasnt mentioned how weary they are of traps. You can see when they are going into the trap how cautious they are. There was one at the back that even as it was eating, it was ready to bolt. One pig takes off, they all freak out and that trap would be compromised. They learn what traps are and if they are part of a group that gets trapped and they escape, good luck on getting them back into another trap.

This is the most sense I've heard about this invasive species. Hogs will never be removed from the US. The money in private land hunts and military like operations of removal is too good vs. the ecological damage they cause. People won't care about the environment until the ultimate collapse.
