Worth mentioning why the priest is the last person to walk towards the altar. Unlike the kings and the nobleman who always walked in front of the line to receive praise and show importance, the priest walks behind as a gesture of serving others just like Christ.

I have to tell you... I am not Catholic, and over the years, I have not been able to find much understanding of Catholicism to draw me to it. Watching your videos, Catholicism is making more sense than ever. Wonderful work. I believe God is definitely using you to change hearts and convert those not close (or no longer close) to God!

I'm in the process of becoming a Catholic. 😊

I used to go to Mass almost daily. But something happened in my soul and mind, for the worst. I look at all those stirn old faces in the church... no signs of sympathy, empathy, smiles, friendly gestures... Everyone is in their own cloud, almost robot like. I know I should not expect making friends in the church (we go there to celebrate God, not to make friends), but the lack of human interaction and human "touch" really bothers me. I go there alone, I come home alone, not speaking to anyone in the meanwhile. Being friendly would be seen as imposing myself, I guess. I feel so alone. Abandoned both by God and by people. All my prayers fell on deaf ears and I feel lonelier than ever, completely demotivated and left by myself. I wish I could go back to being atheist or at least agnostic. My trouble is in KNOWING that God does exist, and even in that Jesus loves me, yes, but I feel he left me behind and ignores my tears and prayers. I never thought I would be at this point again. I'm crying as I'm typing this. Please pray for me.

So sorry to hear this, i am/was in much of the same spot as you. Catholics are really terrible when it comes to community. There is hardly a worse place to find friends than the church. However, i've recently discovered that for now Jesus is enough and he will slowly lead me into community with others. In the last year i stopped going to the extraordinary form and started attending mass with the local jesuits (no Franciscans around here). Only last week i started serving at mass and finally have my first contacts with other catholics. Friendships aren't build over night. Trust in Jesus, he is enough. I know this is so hard. Putting him into the center is hard but sometimes i think he withholds friendships because he wants for us to first grow with him. My recomendation is maybe switch parish/church find a group where you can get involved, sing in the choir if possible, serve at mass, become a lector.All those things can help you to connect to other catholics.

A woman wanted to quit serving at masses and eventually fall out of the Church. When the parish priest caught wind of this, he asked the woman what was wrong. She said: "Father, I don't want to serve in a place where people have no respect for God." "Why?" the priest inquired. She answered: "From where I'm stationed I could see people on their phones, chatting, sleeping, coming in late and leaving early during mass. Some of them look holier-than-thou inside the church but once they step outside, the hypocrisy in their lives reaks. I can't take this anymore. I quit..." The priest asked her one more time if she's sure about her decision to leave. She was adamant. So the priest asked her for a favor before she's eventually gone. "Take a glass full of water and put it on a tray. Walk inside the church beside the walls and circle it three times carrying it. Make sure you get no spills. Do this before the mass starts then come back to me before you leave. This will be the last service I ask of you." Though she found the task absurd, she agreed just so that she could move on with her life. She did it perfectly and was able to finish right before the procession began. When the mass ended she met back with the priest to bid him good bye. He asked her: "So how did you find the challenge I gave you?" She said: "Absurd." Then he asked: "Did you see anyone chatting, sleeping, or busy with their phone during the whole time you were making rounds?" She answered: "No, I was focused not to spill the water." He also asked: "Were you also aware of the people who were knelt down in fervent prayer before the mass started?" "Neither, like I said, I was busy with the task you gave me." The priest caringly said: "If only we were just as focused on Jesus as you were during that water challenge, all else wouldn't distract us from the service we offer Him..."

This was a very nice video on the Mass. For me though, I just love the Extraordinary form so much. I never would have stayed in the faith coming back to the Ordinary Form. When I found the TLM, the holy sacrifice just finally made sense to me like it never had before. This was after battling with anti-Catholic beliefs for more than 10 years, and now I am fervently in love with our beautiful religion and I strive to love God more every day.

Joe B Having been Orthodox and Eastern Catholic, Liturgy matters. There's a reason why all the young people(myself included) go to TLMs, the Ordinariate, ER, and why there are lots of young people in Eastern Orthodoxy. Also, Latin is in incredibly easy. But vernacular would be nice. The Mass should just follow the Ordinariate way tbh.

@Joe B it's not just the language, the Tridentine Mass is different from the Novus Ordo. Also, he certainly spoken some Latin. Jesus would have spoken Gallilean Aramaic (he was a Jew. And look at all the Aramaic quotes in the NT), biblical Hebrew (he was a rabbi after all, he would have had to write his own copies of sacred texts), Koine Greek (he spent his childhood in Egypt, remember?) and would be familiar with rudementary Latin, as he grew up in Roman territories (though most of the Roman soldiers, govenors, lawyers etc. would have known some Greek as well)

@Joe B the Latin Mass of today is not like the Latin Mass you grew up with. All the people there are focused on the Mass, praying with the Mass. Some read from missals, but most? Prayer. Silence. Silent participation. It's just /being/ there with God. You don't have to understand the language. Look to the hundreds of thousands of saints throughout the ages, few of them understood Latin, but they were edified by the Latin Mass. There is a certain air of prayerful reverence in the Latin Mass that is hard to find in most English Masses. That's why we want it :)

As somebody who's working on becoming Catholic from being a non Catholic Christian prior, I frequently find myself feeling ashamed at mass during the receiving of the Eucharist since I can't partake in it, and because of that I've often found myself questioning what the point of me even going every week is. This video at least helped me understand that it's not the only point of the Mass and that there are other reasons to go, so thank you for that.

Glad to hear it. Even if you are not fully initiated, you are still a part of the worshipping community. And yes, there is much more to mass than just receiving the Eucharist. Even if you don’t receive, you may be witness to Christ becoming present and look on with your own eyes.

We recognize Christ in the "breaking of the bread:" present in the assembly--though many gathered into one, in the priest presiding, in the Word proclaimed, and in the Eucharist, par excellence.

This is interesting so anyone can go to church.. this all new to me after watching you I've been feeling this pull to go to church to believe... But I feel strange going to a place I haven't gone before with people who gone to church maybe all there lifes...

What I share is almost entirely from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and the USCCB's pastoral guide to the Mass. There is also a commentary on the mass from Pueblo Publishing that I used, but I cannot remember its name.

Frater Casey, I have been watching your KZread videos for three years now and have enjoyed them very much. They are a simple and straight-forward presentation that strikes to the core of my beliefs. And, you have a very “charismatic” video presence” [although, you have changed and “growed up” in those three years]. I have watched both videos in this series and have a couple of comments for you. The first is, I believe, a production comment. As I watched the two videos in this series, something struck me as odd in the presentation and I couldn’t put my finger on it. I went back to some of your older videos and I think that I might have found what struck me as odd. In your previous videos, your camera work always made it seem like you were talking to the person viewing the video. Whether it was a close-up shot, a mid-level torso shot or a full length shot, it always felt like you were talking to me. That’s what was odd about these videos. When you are standing on the steps of the sanctuary and speaking to the camera, it feels like you are looking over my head. It doesn’t feel like the video is for me; but, for someone behind me. I am certain that camera angle and all of the other production details that I don’t have any knowledge of are responsible for this view. So, to me, this feels more like a video that would be used in a CCD class or religion classroom rather than a one-on-one video that KZread allows. I may be very wrong; but, I wanted to convey my perception in case it will help make your video presentations an even better tool for your mission. My second comment is more personal and light-hearted. I consider myself to be a mature, knowledgeable and practicing Catholic. I was set on this path and encouraged to follow it by solid religious instruction from the Ursuline Sisters (RU), the Holy Cross Brothers (CSC) and the DOMINICANS (OP) in Providence. So, yes, I did take offense at the joke about the Dominicans. LOL. Keep up the good work. And, remember me to Fr. Jerry Massimino, OFM if you ever run into him. Paul Whealon

I've wanted to convert to Catholicism for some time now but my issue is the veneration of the Virgin Mary. For all my life I've believed that one should have faith solely in Jesus and so the veneration of Mary is something I find difficult to wrap my head around. Any advice Brother?

I recommend reading the book "Behold Your Mother" by Tim Staples. It is one of the best defenses of Marian Doctrine and helped me fully understand the "why" of venerating Mary.

No, it's not mandatory. What I describe in this video (and what the GIRM speaks of) is the ideal situation. The Church always describes what *could* or what we should strive for.

From the writings of The Rev. Eugene Walsh (1980s), who focused on liturgical-horizontal theology, i.e., congregation's roles and attitudes during Mass: "If Sunday Mass is to be truly life-giving, the structure or 'order' of the rite must be energized by the hospitality and the attentiveness and purposefulness of the whole assembly. The Church's liturgies of the Word and Eucharist demand the deliberate presence of the whole assembly and must never be isolated from all Christians' obligation to go forth to proclaim and to serve." About the Introductory Rites, he continues: "The Assembly Gathers: Presence" Key components: "At home, arriving at church, entering and gathering, preparation time, and gathering song." "The ministry of hospitality: Giving time and taking the trouble, giving attention to the sacramental action and to each other, and being personally present--on purpose." Some of his works remain to be available from OCP.

Great visuals in the video. Unfortunately the information about the “Gloria in excelsis” is incorrect. At about 6:00 we are told “it should not be omitted or recited”. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal has in n. 53: “If not sung, it is to be recited either by everybody together or by two choirs responding one to the other. It is sung or said on Sundays outside Advent and Lent, and also on Solemnities and Feasts, and at particular celebrations of a more solemn character.” So it is omitted in Lent, Advent and most weekdays. Thank you. Yes, this is correct for particular times of the year. Unfortunately, this video series cannot account for every situation or explain every nuance to the liturgy, and so I have chosen to speak instead about the liturgy in its basic form. Adaptations are to be made in these liturgical seasons, but they are just that: adaptations.

To inaugurate the new creation. He said in Matthew's Gospel "Permit it to be done to fulfill all righteousness." He then was baptized and the Holy Spirit came upon him and the voice of the Father affirmed him as the pleasing son. All of this needs to be set next to (and in contrast with) what happened in the beginning of the Biblical story, which opens with water and spirit and God's voice (read Genesis 1:1-26). But the first Adam FALLS and brings death into the world. The first creation is polluted and ruined by the first man. When Jesus goes to the waters of Baptism he is recapitulating the biblical story and reversing the fall in himself. He descends into the watery chaos (death) and comes up again as a sign of new life emerging. God's spirit once again dwells with humanity, the voice of God's affirmation can again be heard over a human being. The heavens again are opened (they were closed to Adam when he was kicked out of the garden). After all this, Jesus goes into the wilderness to do combat with the Devil -- and rather than falling into sin (as Adam did), he confirms the Father's affirmation of him -- He is a pleasing son! He remains true to God and does not fail. A new creation has begun in Jesus. A new humanity has taken the place of the fallen ones. We are now given a choice. Follow the first Adam to a grave and a closed heaven, or the second Adam through Baptism into new life and a new creation that results in the end in resurrection and eternal life. The Baptism of Jesus is his own re-presentation of his mission to re-make, re-pair, and redeem humanity in himself as the new creation. When we are baptized we are saying, "I follow Jesus, the second Adam."

It’s actually the Roman Catholic understanding of the purpose for Jesus’ baptism (it is possible that you are not a Roman Catholic, and thus I understand your disagreement though I would encourage you to take a closer look). In terms of whether or not my conclusions are “biblical” - there are two senses in which one may either pass or fail that test. The first is that a conclusion needs to mesh with the particular context at hand, and the second is that it must connect to the over-arching story-line of Scripture. The Catholic conclusion passes the test on both counts. FIRST - Jesus tells us in the Bible (thus, the reason is “biblical”) why he is getting baptized; “to fulfill all righteousness.” Moving from there we need the wider answer to what he means by “fulfill all righteousness.” That’s where the biblical story comes into play, along with the need to set Jesus next to a version of humanity that does not fulfill all righteousness (Adam and his offspring). A new creation is need. Water and Spirit are always present when God begins things anew. Here are the final words in para. 536 in the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church summarizing what I have said here and in the previous comment: “Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all mankind. At his baptism “the heavens were opened”-the heavens that Adam’s sin had closed-and the waters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and the Spirit, a prelude to the new creation.” (P. 136). Here is what Joseph Ratzinger (who became Pope Benedict 16) says about the Baptism of Jesus as pointing to a new creation beginning in Him. “Jesus’ Baptism, then, is understood as a repetition of the whole of history, which both recapitulates the past, and anticipates the future” (from the book “Jesus of Nazareth” by Joseph Ratzinger - p. 20). In other words, in Jesus’ baptism, a new creation is begun. The sinfulness of Adam and his offspring is taken down into the water and left there, and the new humanity - Jesus - emerges, affirmed by the Father as the pleasing son, and proving his faithfulness in the narrative that follows all the way to the cross and resurrection.

@@KennyBurchard The truth purpose of Yahoshua baptism was for him to become The Great High Priest of YAHWEN. See Yahoshua is not just the sacrifice that cover the sins of world, but he is also the hign priest that present and offer up the gift of blood. For without a high priest it wouldn't be no sacrifice. Hebrews 5:1-5, Hebrews 9:6. Caiaphas was the unrightful high priest, for he was not chosen by Yahwen for this job but by the Sanhedrin. John The Baptist son of Zechariah high priest of YAH was the rightful high priest but because of the corruption of the Sanhedrin, John separated from them withdrawing in to the desert. In Leviticus 8, Aaron and his sons as part of the ritual to become the high priest and priests of YAH, Moses had to washed them in water. Same as Yahoshua need it to be baptized by John to became the high priest. And just like moses had the authority to made Aaron and sons priests, John had authority to transfer his title to Yahoshua. He couldn't begin with his ministry without becoming the high priest. Yahoshua committed no sings, therefore he didn't have to be baptized for the same reason as us yet "to fulfill all righteousness" by doing as it is written in the Torah by becoming The Great High Priest of YAH like the righteous Melchizedek was before him. In Matthew 26:65, Caiaphas tore his own clothing eliminating himself as a high priest. Leviticus 21:10 leaving Yahoshua as the one true high priest to perform the last blood sacrifice.

@@KennyBurchard Like you said brother, the Roman Catholic church teach their own understanding of the scriptures from a Greco-roman point of view of things. When in truth, we are supposed to observe, learn and teach the scriptures from a Hebrew-Israelite point of view because that is the way it is meant to be. I encourage you to study The Great Schim of 1054 from non bias material. I can give you 100 reasons why I thanks YAH for opening my eyes and get me out of that Roman system of belief. For example: the change and unfulfilling of YAH second and fourth commandments by the Roman Church. Exodus 20:3-5 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work. But the seventh day is the sabbath of theLord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. There is no absolution during this point of the mass, but there is for the reception of communion. Both are correct.

These things happen in my church

I went in like 5 minutes in advance. The singing already started, everyone was sitting in their seats and everyone looked at me when I entered. Pretty embarrassing perhaps I should arrive a bit early.

You say worship is inherently communal - what about the private Masses of the Benedictines et al.?

Well it depends what you mean by "private." Even if not open to the public, they still have a communal nature if the brothers are gathered together. The Mass is not invalid if the priest is alone, but such a situation would be the exception, not the rule.

@@BreakingInTheHabit I mean before the New Mass - Benedictines (as well as other religious orders) had (and have, for some communities) the habit of having a conventual Mass, but of also having *private* Masses, with just one server. Every day.

Question Brother, me being a Catholic I have always wondered why we sacrifice Christ again and again in the altar. I mean Christ have already died for us once for once and for all in the cross. Then why we do sacrifice and transubstantiation. Is it necessary?

That’s actually a common misconception. We do not sacrifice Jesus again. As the Letter to the Hebrews says, there is only one sacrifice for all. What we do at the Mass is remember and enter into the one true sacrifice. Jesus cannot die again, as he has been resurrected.

JAICIL we remember the sacrifice of our lord, but that doesn’t mean it’s just a representation of Christ. The Eucharist is 100% Jesus’ body

Holy Mass sacramentally perpetuates the exact sacrifice of Our Lord on the Cross in an unbloody manner but this does not mean that Our Lord is sacrificed anew in each Mass. The Church teaches that Holy Mass in essence is the Sacrifice of Christ because what takes place in the Altar is the same thing that happened in the cross and that is that God the Son offered himself wholly to God the Father for the remission of our sins. Same thing happened on the Last Supper yet he consummated the actual sacrifice on Holy Friday and did not died twice. Also it is the Risen Christ whom we encounter in each Eucharist. He is very much alive but it was his desire to make accesible the graces of his one sacrifice throughout time. God bless you.

I think it is VERY WRONG to talk inside the nave/church while others are trying to prepare to take part in the Mass.

And that is certainly your perspective on Church, and I hope you find a community that shares that value. But it's important to remember that this is not a universal rule, and in other places or cultures, it would be odd or even rude not to greet one another. The church is the gathering place of faith, not just a personal room for prayer, and so a balance must always be struck.

@@BreakingInTheHabit So what exactly changed? In the Catholic parishes of my youth, you simply didn't talk in church and the musicians didn't "warm up" in church either. We either shared a communal prayer like the Rosary or we each prayed in silence. What changed? Is this change documented in the postconciliar documents of Vatican II? Now all I hear are booming comments about where people are going to breakfast after Mass and that "I hope father keeps it short today, I'm really hungry." Thanks be to God for my phone and ear buds. At least I can listen to calming/prayerful music just before the procession begins.

That's why I love when there is a separate Blessed Sacrament Chapel! In my diocese, sadly, almost all have been removed as the tabernacle is placed in the large nave and far away from the people.

it does not matter, even if it is done well, and everyone is properly disposed, the ritual of the new Mass is insipid, silly, trivial, uninspiring, and not edifying. It is not prayerful, reverent, or even serious.,, we would do less harm if we didn't unlock the church doors on Sunday

Not always. A bishop can celebrate mass as well. And while he is the "fullness of the priesthood," he is not a presbyter. It is incorrect to use the term "priest" in some cases, but terms like "presider" and "celebrant" are more appropriate.

Oh gosh....so well meaning, so friendly...but totally lacking in reverence and a sense of transcendence....I wish you well, but I see this dated 1970 "gathering" and reference to the "presider" with the nothing background music and find myself unsurprised that Mass attendance has plummeted and Catholics feel so empty. Lex orandi lex credendi. ..and ain't that the truth!

Nobody talks like this is real life. Why do all religious videos.....Catholic, Mormon, Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientologist all have this unnatural emoting?

I grew up going to Mass and allways felt something was wrong and missing. Now it is self evident. The modern Novus Ordo Mass is devoid of any depth or reverence, it's watered down Catholicism. In fact it makes me angry how I have been feed this nonsense when previous generations had at least a much richer mass to experience. Im facing east these days looking towards The Orthodox Church.
