The Intersection of Afrobeats and Hip Hop [STREET SOLDIERS]

The African influence is growing in hip hop with the explosion of Afrobeats music. As hip hop culture becomes more international, it's opening up new doors around the world.
The video for French Montana and Swae Lee's 2017 hit "Unforgettable" was filmed in Uganda and has been viewed more than 1 billion times on KZread. Its success paved the way for many others, like Casanova and Davido's hit "2AM" and Nigerian artist Burna Boy, who has enjoyed Billboard Top 10 chart success with his unique sound.
Hot 97's DJ Wallah, who took a chance and broke Afro B's "Joanna," says the appeal of the Afrobeats sound is universal. He says he sees a lot of the hip hop artists collaborating with African artists now. He says that is pushing the culture forward and broadening the horizons of hip hop.
Dr. Chris Emdin, a Professor at Columbia University Teachers College, says the hip hop-African connection is real and deep.
And Tuma Basa, KZread's director of urban music, says the growing number of collaborations between hip hop artists and African artists is a way for artists to expand their audience without alienating their core fans.

I don't understand why anyone is questioning the connection between these different kinds of music of African people. We are all the same people at the end of the day whether we are on the continent or in the diaspora. It's true that we have differences because of our removal from the continent, but inside of us all we still have the spirit of Africa inside of us and it is evident when it manifests in our music. It doesn't matter if we are looking at the spirituals, highlife, jazz, reggae, blues, soca, hip hop, r&b, afrobeat, gospel, samba, salsa or whatever, we can hear Africa in all of that.

Fela's Afrobeat actually came from a mixture of different sources. He took his inspiration first from Jazz music, then Yoruba folks songs found in local tales, usually in call and response rhythms. Don't forget that Fela schooled in England and at first he was playing European Jazz music until his mother advised him. He then mixed it with African Yoruba percussions using Nigerian Pidgin English and the Yoruba language. The Afrobeats we found today is derived from the work of Fela. He was the first to play music in Pidgin English, mixing it with Yoruba and more artistes have introduced Igbo language into the mix.

Don't get it wrong. Afrobeat is Fela's own hard work. He fussed Nigerian traditional musics, jazz and also only added Ghana's highlife music as part of what he fussed together to form afrobeat while he was experimenting. How dare Ghana now try to claim his sweat. Americans and Nigerian traditional musicians (that he also borrowed from their genre or added their genre to form afrobeat) are not trying to claim his work or sweat. So why is Ghana always trying to steal people's work (Fela's work). Your Ghana highlife was only fussed with other genres to form something totally different and new, and is still there with you. Nobody is dragging it with you. Why don't you make it (your Ghana highlife) big or experiment with it, just as Fela did with Nigerian traditional musics to discover something new, and make it go world wide so that the world can celebrate you too and stop trying to claim other people's work. This goes out to all Ghanaians to always leave Nigeria alone and stop competing. Lets start to see ourselves as one black family world wide with our root in Africa and not only me, me, me (individualism which will not make us (Africa) grow).

Afrobeat was developed in the late 1960s led by Fela Kuti who, with drummer Tony Allen, experimented with different contemporary music of the time. Afrobeat stemmed from Highlife, which began in Ghana in the early 1920s. During that time, Ghanaian musicians incorporated foreign influences like the foxtrot and calypso with Ghanaian rhythms such as osibisaba (Fante). Yoruba percussion and vocal traditions were incorporated as well. Highlife was associated with the local African aristocracy during the colonial period and was played by numerous bands including the Jazz Kings, Cape Coast Sugar Babies, and Accra Orchestra along the country's coast. This was the music Fela Kuti and Tony Allen played and listened to when they were young.[1]

@@TheKofinyarko So, why do you need to infuse the Nigerian pidgin and or Yoruba into it for it to hit? Camidoh a Ghanaian had to use a yoruba lingua and pidgin to hit through the market. Why does reggae have a particular language or tone synonymous to Jamaica? If you don't think it is Nigeria. Sing it in your mother tongue less pidgin or yoruba or Igbo in some cases and let's know if will still be Afrobeats.

Young Nigerians are using Afrobeat to send a strong warning to American hip hop artists. Within the space of 20 years they have transformed an underated African music style to a world class standard. Jamaican dancehall is declining, and if cares is not taken American hip hop would follow.

Afro beats are nothing more than drums and auto tune vocals and stab Tribble instruments sounds that were created on a computer .all songs sounds the same without dynamic chords progressions that we do have on African Americans music styles like jazz. rhythm and bleus.ragtime.funk. pop or rock music and other invented music styles they brought us on this planet.dont get me wrong we cant compare music from the continent with african american music styles that been change the game completly on this planet🎹🎼
