Excellent interview, what a story teller :)
So nice to know where such a fun car came from. and glad to have 1.
Amazing editing; made the story even more interesting! If only there would be either a hard top version of the Miata, or a convertible version of the BRZ, it will be a direct head to head comparison.
NSX, 300, and MX5 all revealed at the same show. Ugh wish I could go back in time
This is so interesting. Thanks for creating this video!
I would have loved to see the old hard top prototype from a distance. Cool story and great history though.

the success is because front engine rwd, if the mx3 and mx6 is rwd as well, im sure they earn hell of a lot more

yes they did, only for the japanes market sold under the japanese luxury subsidiary Eunos and was called the roadster coupe
Sure wish i knew who to talk to at MAZDA to get a hold of that "M Coupe" splash mold for about 48 hours...

There is an aftermarket hardtop in that design (forgot the manufacturer right now). Take that, mount it, and smooth out the gap where it's connected to the car. And you got the coupé
if a v6 rwd in a mx6, oh yeah i will buy it
The new Miata is growing on me like the new Lexus IS 250/350. I LIKEY!!!
The original model reminds me of the Ford Probe.

I'm sure the Probe was a Mazda design.
I watched a MX-5 add before this video.
Interesting that the final design came from Japan, a country not known for automotive beauty. The designers-san there really improved the flat-sided US prototype to create the classic NA as we know it.
Wish he would've expanded a bit on the MX-3.

Why won't most manufacturers make cars available in colors again (re: 7:12)? All that is available today is black, white, dark gray, silver, and maroon.

It seems that colors are being chosen to justify prices rather than to evoke emotions which are part of the the reason that British sports cars sold so well.
Elan looks like a gem. How in the world British roadsters are no more?

They also had reliability issues. My dad had an MGB that pretty much beat itself to pieces on a regular basis.

Fromkiss Schmiddlap My dad had a white one. I remember it always being in the shop, and him driving a loaner, purplish one, frequently.

British roadsters were notoriously unreliable. Miata MX 5 highly reliable. The ideal roadster built for drivers.
I wish there were ore videos like this on KZread. Worth a crap.
Interesting story. I like the hard top design as well. But the Miata design concept was inspired by the English roadsters. Mazda made it perfect with the great reliability of the Japanese engineering.

Yeah, but,a British 1960s sportscar, for how reliable it may be,can't compete with a 1990s Hapanese sportscar. Besides,I can't even come up with words to describe how clear it is that this is bullshit

Dylan, you're bloody ignorant. You oughta get out of your trailer park more often.
I always thought the RX7 convertible was a cool one
Thanks! Up to now, I had never heard the true story of the MX-5. Only the gossip.

Let the BRAND Snoobs watch these videos of how the Mazda resurected a sports car.....and now look.... the dislikes from a few of them....:-)

Place a Miata alongside a BMW Z3, for example. The Z3 will look much more "agressive". If people don't want that, they get the small car with the big round "eyes". That's why it's a "woman's car"

Max S. So only a million women bought them ? world car and world design 2016 yup the motoring media know nothing yet a few kids who think a trash can exhaust and v8 power is all you need to make a balanced roadster. Hilarious ignorance.
