The INSANE Life of History's Most Interesting Surgeon | Hidden Stories

Ойын-сауық

During the mid-1800s, James Barry, a top-ranking surgeon in the British Army, was always known for being just a bit strange. However, since it was nothing too out of the ordinary, people didn't think much of it. But when he suddenly passed away one day and his body was examined, a secret was uncovered about him that BLEW everyone's mind, and suddenly, some of his past actions and behaviors started to make a lot more sense…
My name is Andy Jiang and I do a vigorous, detailed dives into some of the most fascinating, bizarre, and unreal true stories that are out there. Subscribe and turn on all post notifications so you don’t miss any of my weekly uploads!

As far as the cap on Florence Nightengale's head: When a lady was out in public, she was supposed to wear a hat, not a cap. The cap was for indoors only or when at home in your own garden. It was very good narration for an interesting story!

@@a_raichub james having had an abortion doesn't make sense if the cleaning lady really did see stretch marks on her abdomen as possible signs of pregnancy. I would imagine her having been in her 3rd trimester already for those marks to show, and pretty sure abortion would be considered a very dangerous choice in that scenario... I think, her having had a possible still born baby makes more sense... or at least a very late miscarriage... these are ofc assuming that no baby survived the pregnancy.

I don’t think the doctor was a “complete fraud, a complete fake”. The only thing he concealed was parts of his body that would block all pathways to a career he was clearly born for (and had every intention of pursuing, and was v successful at). Whatever the gender identity of this doctor was, I’d argue that in the big picture what really matters is how many people he helped with his skills as a practitioner of medicine - exactly what a doctor should do.

Another great story and very interesting bit of history. It's sad she never would've been able to attend university, reach such positions or had so many accomplishments if she remained as a woman. Best is as a niece of Jerry Berry, she may have gotten married off to a wealthy family. As for why women were attracted to him, it wasn't the appearance... women are attracted to confidence and power, which she as Dr. James Berry had plenty of confidence to carry this off and definitely plenty of power through the connections and positions held.

Nightingale is a pioneer herself she was a statistician who did research and can be single handedly held responsible for the decrease in the spread of infections from soldier to soldier during treatments and surgery. Nightingale brought forth the statistics and research that simple hand washing could prevent infection It very well could be that Berry resented Nightingale as a doctor toward a nurse BECAUSE nightingale was a bit of an upstart herself. She wouldn't hesitate to get in a man's face either. Not to minimize it, but berry was engaging a cat-fight with nightingale That's my thoughts as an RN I'm team Nightingale 😂

Dr. Barry had to dress up as a man in order to get to where she was, so I bet she was resentful that a woman was able to rise to a high level without having to hide. Barry no doubt had a lot of internal strife regarding her womanhood being hidden away. She couldn't marry and have children. She couldn't express herself honestly.
