Also, relative to other boats, like sailing yachts, it's huge - they normally have around 30-40hp engines for manoeuvring and slow cruising in no wind. And compared to cars. Drag racing cars produce around 4-5,000hp, still nowhere near tugs.

@@edwardtye4119 Top fuel averages 10,000hp, 8,000hp is considered the low end. Think the highest I've seen personally was a touch over 11. I work in maritime diesel and the two ABC engines I just serviced the other day will be going into a tug, and only produce 2000hp each. In comparison the Wartsila 40s and 50s we service for cruise ships produce 1000-1300hp per cylinder, in a V18 configuration. Also with two engines on board. Overall it's like pointing at the average minivan today and talking about how crazy powerful it is, then using an ATV or Moped for comparison.

Years ago a former boss/employer, that liked to pretend he was an actual engineer, spent a small fortune building this massive shredder machine to process tires and other things into tiny bits expecting to make a fortune with it. He sourced a tugboat engine that was so big that it was delivered to the local town on a rail car. After getting his monstrous contraption up and running he started testing it. It would eat anything! However, the fatal flaw was that the wannabe engineer never once calculated the fuel burn of a multi-thousand HP engine. Turned out the fuel burn alone ate more money than anything he could shred with it was ever going to be worth! 🤣

Not always. The harbour pilot will decide on the tug package based on the ships particulars and environmental conditions. Bow thrusters are almost never as powerful as a ship docking tug, and do not offer the same degree of control. Most new ships are not built with thrusters because they know the ports they call have adequate tugs available or mandatory tugs through the pilots. In this case, ship owners may choose to not install thrusters and save the cost.

What kind of power tug boat can push? According to the name of this video one would assume having this info.

Never thought of using a drone for a "co-tug" before 🤔 Wonder if the recognition software is capable of recognizing objects this small 🦐

If it's close enough, yes. Modern image recognition software is incredible. Your smartphone probably has the same capability

1:04 gross tonage ist a a volumentric unit equivalent to 100foot squeare or 2.83 cubic meters. The gross tonage is the total amount of cubic space a ship has. The wight of a ship its called displacement and its measured in Metric Tons 1000kilograms. Do not mix this things please.

I picked up on the same comment in the video, however you have also slightly confused GT with the long obsolete GRT. Your point still stands and GT is a function of the moulded volume, not a weight.

I remember having 2 detroit diesel 16-92's around. They had turbo and super chargers combined. Wore ear muffs to hit the air starters. You just go back to work aboard with the ground tilting after start up. A good captain or 1st mate wont yank the controls, you can tell whats going on.

Those versions will not run without the roots style super charger, they don't make HP with them, it's how the engine gets air to "breath" the high HP comes from the exhaust driven turbo charger/chargers and the fact that those series of Detroit diesels are all two-stroke cycle engines so they make twice the horsepower as a four-stroke cycle diesel engine would love the sound of a buzzin dozen with turbos
