The rubber, spring seals can cause a groove in the cam too. Do the newer seals fit on the old 1.6D? Same size? I've drilled a hole in the rubber cam seals and pulled them with a screw before. I've used the old cam sprocket and washers to press the new seal in.

Yes it is the same 47x32x10 seal. Incidentally this same seal is used by the AHU/1Z MK3/B4 for the crank seal AND the the cam seal AND intermediate shaft seal; so you can PTFE them all. As for the groove, they all leave 'em but we haven't seen any issues there within reason.

This was not meant to be a comprehensive how-to. Generally there are 3 types of seals and we wanted to educate regarding best install practices. Replacement procedure and requisite tools are very much application specific. We recommend purchasing a 24 hour Erwin subscription for the very reasonable price $35. (vw.erwin.com) In that time you can download EVERYTHING for your car. The real-deal specialty VW tools are available to the public from vw.snapon.com.
