The Incredible Way to Paint Vibrant Skin Colours in a Portrait Painting.
In this Alla Prima portrait painting tutorial, realist Painter Alex Tzavaras shows you an incredible way to paint skin in a portrait.

When we're portrait painting in oil, we're presented with a wide variety of skin tones. When we're mixing skin tones, we don't actually need to match any of the colours we see precisely. Instead, we need to match the variety itself, between warmer and cooler, more intense or more nuetral skin tones. So if you want to learn how to mix skin tones, you need to think of them in terms of their colour temperature relationships.
If when we're mixing skin tones, we only need to match the relationships between the colours and not the colours themselves, this means we can push the colour. We can increase the colour intensity of certain notes or even invent colours. In this way we can create more colourful vibrant skin tones. As long as your skin tones are the correct value and colour temperature, your portrait painting will still appear lifelike

    That green between the core shadow and terminator line is an amazing trick to turn the form. I see it a lot in Sargents paintings. This is why camera photos will always feel "flat" We create an "illusion" of our subject and connect differently with our subject and the viewer. Amazing this skill we have. Nice work!

    Fantastic video Alex. Wonder why these last videos have so little views, they’re top quality. Regarding temperature, I was looking at some modern masters (Munch, Picasso etc), and even in their most ‘simple’ paintings (like those ‘geometric’ picasso portraits), every colour - even when appearing just out of the tube - has always some warmer and cooler version of the same hue, of the same value of course, plus some touches of grey/complementary which blend in unnoticed because they have the same value.

    Interesting. I've never noticed that about Picasso's work. I shall have to look more closely. And yes, I've noticed that about my videos recently. I think the algorithm has changed to focus more on audience retention. This is something I've always thought about, by trying to explain quite complicated stuff as succinctly as possible, but I guess I'm going to have to work more on my delivery and editing if I want more views?

    @@SIMPLIFYDrawingandPaintingI think, It doesn't need to be 100% naked, the model can dress on. The pant is alright for the male model, for female I think any clothes that would help avoid nudity is ok. I personally just want to see how you apply your methods on the figure painting. I think it's also helpful for many people who are struggling through this subject.

    Why is munsell colour chart not used anymore?

  • @SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting

    @SIMPLIFYDrawingandPainting

    Жыл бұрын

    Some artists may still use it, but it is completely unnecessary? However, it does provides quite a good diagram for explaining the three main properties of colour, value, hue and chroma. I personally don't the term chroma. I find it a bit too much like jargon. I prefer the term saturation, or even better intensity, as they all mean the same thing. They describe the degree to which a colour moves from grey to purer colour straight out of the tube,.which I talk about a lot in this video. I reckon it would be impossible to try to use the Munsell colour chart to match your colours if you are painting from life, from a model or plein air. It's too complicated and you just don't have time. Once you realise that you actually need to match colours perfectly, but instead you only need to match the relationships between the three properties, value, hue i.e. temperature and intensity in order for you colours to appear lifelike, it will make mixing colour so much easier.
