The Incredible Effect of Coating Our Roof w/ Acrylic White Paint!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The part of a house that sunlight heats up the most is the roof, simply because the sun traverses above us. And the amount of heat that a roof absorbs depends on the color of its coating. A typical roof absorbs 90% of the heat coming from the sun. Dark-colored roof coatings absorb more heat compared to lighter-colored roofs. And in this project, we’re gonna put this concept to the test by painting our roof white.

This is just my own opinion. I used to think that the color of the roof would significantly reduce the heat inside of house but a lot of roofer told me that 10 degrees difference on the surface of the roof wouldn't be much different in temperature for the space between the roof and the ceiling. As long as you installed heat insulation correctly (I just used the cheap aluminium insulation sheet), the temperature underneath the roof would significantly be lower than without the insulation. So if you already installed the insulation, the temperature difference due to the color of the is negligible which for me is true. We used to turn on AC almost everyday but after installing the insulation, we only turn it on a few days a month which save a lot on electricity bill.

@lylelaney8270 you may be correct but the heat rejecting paint is not all about sunlight reflectance, but IR reflectance as well. I painted our roof with Boysen Cool Shades (Reflecting White), and the difference is massive even for a single coat. Mind you, our ceiling to roof is only 2 feet. Before painting, our AC struggles and the ceiling gives us headaches even with AC on. At 9-10AM, you will be woken up by hot ceiling even with AC on. But with the paint, even 12NN or 1PM is very mild and AC is set to very low. And this is without foam insulation. Between foam insulation and an IR reflective paint, I would choose the paint. It is cheaper and easier to apply. Foam insulation is expensive and laborious to install. But well, it gives better heat rejection but at a price.

@@michaeljohnjugar703 Boysen Cool shades and a few others paint brands do provide heat resistant but it's not necessarily due to the color but the formulation of the paint though, at least that from what I gather. I agree with on foam insulation. It's expensive and troublesome to apply and to dispose.

Well, I would consider painting the roof and install insulation foam. That might be costly but two working together will definitely make the room far even cooler that even just using standard fans directed at your window as if a makeshift ventilation to replace the warm air inside the room would be enough if you really want to save energy to the point of not using Air Conditioner.

@@dgreater1 If you install the foam insulation, the effect of the temperature difference between the painted and unpainted roofs is negligible. If you could afford foam insulation, you could definitely afford the cost of running the air conditioning. Also, I don't think it's necessary for the tropical equator zone. Just some cheap heat insulation would suffice, in my opinion. We don't turn on the AC all the time; it's not because we desperately need to save. It's just unnecessary. On a regular day, opening up the windows with a low-to-medium setting on the fan is enough. However, our house is surrounded by trees and vegetation which might be different from other people's.

@@lylelaney8270 The point of painting the roof is so that it doesn't absorb heat that would be dispersed to the whole area. It's like in a car, even if you have insulation foam inside, if the car absorbs too much heat from the direct sunlight because of its color, it would penetrate inside and make it like a huge oven. It's the same with houses, the best way to prevent such thing is prevent the body from absorbing too much heat from the sun and there are different methods for that, one is painting. Also, being surrounded by trees and vegetation definitely can help a lot with shading which prevents heat from accumulating that much. Also, another method that could be used instead of painting the roof is put UV shade nets and totally block the sun from heating the roof. If it's concrete type roofing then that's a different thing.

I totally enjoyed your very detailed report about white colored roof paint. There's actually a Boysen paint called Cool Roof that have reflective particles in the paint itself. I wonder if that product will result in a lower temp readings compared to your unofficial experiment? I'm also surprised that no one in the Philippines have thought about venting the roof ridge itself. Also, are pipe boot flashing available in the Philippines? Boots in conjunction with proper sealants are better protection against water intrusion. I also think that cool roof paints in conjunction with proper attic venting and proper insulation will result in even more comfortable temps inside the house.

Very good explanation for an interesting topic. I just have one critique. You should have used a contact temperature sensor like a thermocouple or RTD instead of an infrared thermometer. Infrared thermometers are convenient and easy to use but suffer from a serious (in my opinion) flaw They rely heavily on the emissitivity of the object. In simple terms, objects with high reflectivity (like your GI test sheet) will show lower than real temperatures. Also, generally speaking, dark colored objects will show a higher temperature than lighter colored ones even if they are at the same temperatures. The infrared thermometer you are using is optimized for human skin, not metal surfaces or even painted metals. However, even with this issue, I think your results are valid enough to convince me to go ahead with my plan to paint my roof white. Thank you very much.

Excellent video; thorough & scientific! 👍🏻 Unfortunately here in France there are regulations on what colour your roof is! , ( The roofs in same community must conform to local rules on roofing materials & colour..🙄). Most roofs here are ceramic tiles. New buildings must conform to latest standards for insulation, so things are gradually improving.. Because of our l'attitude difference between summer & winter is more extreme - so good insulation is important to protect against too much heat entry in summer and too much heat loss in winter..

I do not doubt that the white coated roof would be cooler the methodology displayed here is not going to yield accurate results. a few issues: 1. The infrared, non-contact, temperature measurement using two different surfaces without taking their respective emissivities into account, which are likely to be different, possibly significantly so (especially the uncoated metal, which will have a very low emissivity), could result in significant temperature reading errors. 2. Measuring the temperature at different times and different sun angles, and on sections of roofs facing different directions, and at different ambient temperatures, will definitely yield different temperatures. 3. Putting a thermometer in the sun will not yield anything like an accurate air temperature. Depending on the emissivity of the thermometer body, the temperature reading could be even tens of degrees off of the actual temperature. The outside temperature reading presented in the video was likely 10 or more degrees hotter than the actual outside air temperature.

That's a statement about a change in temperrature, not about the tempererture level itself. A drop in temperature from, say, 35 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius, corresponds to a change from 95 degrees Fahrenheit to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and hence to drop in temperature of "just" 18 degrees Fahrenheit -- not 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

The conversion is F =1.8 * C + 32 But if you are going to measure the delta (change) in both sides you need to use differential on both sides Thus, delta F = 1.8 delta C So a change of 10 deg C -> change of 18 deg F

  • @HanDIYman007
