The Incredible Cancelled Monsters Inc. Sequel: Lost in Scaradise Monsters Inc 2 - Canned Goods

Фильм және анимация

Did you know that Monsters Inc almost had a sequel? It would have seen Mike and Sulley trapped in the human world, reuniting with Randall and meeting all sorts of new banished monsters, on a quest to reunite with Boo.
In 2004, Disney and Pixar were at war. In 2005, it all fell apart. In retaliation to Pixar, Disney’s at the time CEO, Michael Eisner, opened up Circle 7 Animation. Their goal was simple, make sequels to Pixar movies.
They had 3 initial sequels lined up. Toy Story 3, Monsters Inc 2: Lost in Scaradise, and Finding Nemo 2. Lost in Scaradise is the only one of these movies where the plot was unknown to the public- until now. Rob Muir, one of the cancelled film's screenwriter was gracious enough to sit down with me for an interview where we discussed the movie, and I can't thank him enough. Here on Canned Goods, we can exclusively reveal to you the story of Monsters Inc 2.
Today, in honor of Monsters at Work’s release, we’ll be breaking down the development, plot, and cancellation of Monsters Inc’s unmade sequel: Monsters Inc 2: Lost in Scaradise.
Enjoy!

Man this script is actually really good, doesn't seem like a cashgrab sequel. Instead a sequel that respects the characters, expand the universe, redeeming Randall and showing an interesting aspect of what monsters are to humans in the real world.

Theres 1 major flaw in the story. Instead of scaring the monster obsessed guy at the end, perhaps sully could reconcile with the human when he finds out that the guy was a kid they used to scare. It's there fault he's like this. Because who's to say he won't escape the arctic and become even more monter obsessed.

I get that take. But I will say, the Abominable Snowman actually has a line in the script about how he moved even higher up into the mountains, even farther away from humans. That detail obviously got lost when I did the summary. So the writers did think through Simon escaping!

My problem with this script is that it ends with yet another chase scene through the door warehouse with someone being held hostage. It feels like it's just repeating the same finale. I would rather a chase through the streets of Monstropolis as it would expand the monster world a little, maybe ending in Sully's apartment or even Harryhausen's.

I can already see the basics of why it wouldn't work from a plot perspective. Using a "wedding" as the ticking time bomb in the plot isn't very effective as Mike's wedding isn't the core of the emotional arc in the story. In the first movie, Mike and Sully's relationship with Boo in the movie is both the emotional core of the movie and the most important plot element in the story. Everything in the original movie revolves around Boo and how she is handled so there is a looming threat around every corner that she might be "discovered" and that Mike and Sully will be discovered as "traitors" to the company that they have worked so hard for. The original film has Sully abandoning his life, dreams, and even Mike to protect "the truth" and "innocent" based on a gut feeling he had that it was the right thing to do. This makes Sully an interesting character as he is the world's best scarer and yet he is the monster with the kindest heart. It's a nice character dichotomy that really adds an extra layer to the movie's already excellent emotional core. The main ticking time bomb in the movie (outside of being discovered/fired) is the fact that the villains are about to kidnap children and essentially "milk" children dry of their scream energy... probably until they die. The stakes are VERY high for both of the main characters, Boo, and for the future of children across the world. In Lost in Scaradise, neither Boo, Simon, Sully, Celia, Flankbottom, or the Wedding are the core of the movie. When hearing the plot breakdown, it was immediately obvious that there wasn't a strong consistent core to the film or an overarching point to the film. Why is Flankbottom important to the plot other than to be a pointless rival? While Mike and Sully being stuck in the human world is inconvenient, we know that it won't kill them and that many monsters have survived in the human world without issue, so there isn't a real ticking time bomb other than Mike's wedding being inconvenienced, which Celia would obviously forgive him upon discovering that he has been missing for several days along with THE CEO OF THE COMPANY. Again, that's inconvenient but that isn't a major threat. To add to that, I'm confused as to why Mike and Sully can't just wait in front of any door at night and wait for a scarer/comedian monster to show up. The first movie has the exact same plot point where they get stuck in the human world and apparently one can get back to the monster world within a couple of hours. The other issue is that (like all Pixar movies) the character has a "want" but doesn't know what they "need". As far as I'm aware, Sully just isn't a fan of being a CEO and he misses Boo, but at the end of the movie nothing is truly accomplished and all of the characters are back at square one with the exception of Mike and Sully leaving management. There isn't a logical rush to find Boo as she is not in any danger other than the fact that Sully feels lonely. Sully wants to find Boo and he finds Boo... did he grow as a character? Did Mike grow as a character? Simon, while mildly interesting, kind of goes against the idea that humans are seen as an "other" or an "entity" that monsters don't associate with and the audience isn't supposed to be interested in. The universe of Monster's Inc is based on a child's perception of reality and "child folklore". However, once you start getting into "humans kidnapping monsters" or "humans invading the monster world" it starts to be more of a science fiction based story with rules, mechanics, and lore (which were all elements the first movie was originally going to have but they smartly cut out due to the lore feeling unnecessary and complicated). The other issue is that Simon isn't really a physical or moral threat to anyone. Sully can obviously overpower any human and Simon has no real means of threatening monsters nor is his motivation directly in conflict with Sully's. In the first movie, Mr. Waternoose is morally at odds with Sully which is why he works as a villain. Sully has to get over the fact that the boss he has worked under for decades is heartless and will gladly kidnap innocent children. Sully has to mature as a character and stand up for what he believes is right, which is in opposition to everything he once believed in. Simon, on the other hand, doesn't challenge Sully physically or morally and at most he can make bold claims of "presenting monsters" to the human world, which obviously hasn't worked for him before so why would it work now? What does Simon do to make Mike or Sully grow as a character? As of now, it seems like nothing. Now, the idea of an adult human element could work, the issue is that humans are no longer viewed as "toxic" so there isn't a huge social stigma against an adult human discovering monsters. Monster's University smartly put the plot in the past so that adult humans could be see as a powerful "entity" or "force" that monsters are unable to control or tame. For humans the equivalent would be thousands of radioactive mutants roaming about. There is a reason humans are scary. However, for a sequel, that element no longer works. I definitely enjoyed hearing this script and knowing a bit about the premise; however, I think it has a LOT of obvious flaws in it as is. For a Monster's Inc sequel to work, there needs to be growth in the characters and the story needs to work towards producing that growth. An interesting idea might be that Sully is both a terrible comedian and a terrible manager so the world that he "saved" is one that he can't adapt to and he feels useless to society. Now, that's not very flesh out, but there are ideas you could play with such as "everyone who was a scarer getting fired due to being too scary" and Sully having to deal with that along with Mike getting married or possibly other huge consequences to the Sully's actions in the first movie. There's definitely a lot to work with, but a consistent issue across all possibilities for a sequel is that it is difficult to "overturn" the world twice. It would start to feel cheap for Sully to be a constant impetus for overturning society, especially given the fact that his character is never displayed as being overly intelligent. He has a big heart and he trusts his senses, but he is never "looking" for action.

@@bitterman7258 After thinking about it a little bit more, I think one way to make "Simon" more intimidating is if they made him a "monster counterpart" and the movie started off with a monster being kidnapped in the same way that Mr. Waternoose was planning on kidnapping children. It might be interesting to see Monsters get a taste of their own medicine and come to terms with the psychological damage they've placed on people. Maybe Simon literally has a monster outfit to sneak in amongst monsters just like Boo's outfit? The idea of a human threatening to kidnap monsters isn't as scary as a human actually kidnapping monsters, so possibly Celia or Mike are the ones who get kidnapped very early on in the movie, but it might be a little cliche for Mike to get captured again. But it would be pretty creepy for Mike to be on the scare floor all alone and a weird monster with a thousand yard stare walks up to him, grabs him, and then smuggles him into the human world. The alternative could start with a monster going into the human world, about to tell a joke to a kid, and then we discover the kid is a fake. The audience will assume this was a "test" in the facility, but then it turns out that it is in the human world and that the "monster hunter" is setting traps. So the intro would show a monster getting captured on the job. The only issue is I don't know how that would actually challenge the main characters since Sully and Mike have already changed as people. There needs to be something for them to get out of the interaction other than teaching Simon a lesson on "forgiveness".

It also works with what the first movie said about kids getting harder and harder to scare, at this point people who grew out of the notion of monsters hiding in their closet are so hard to scare their brains barely even registers their existence, and those who do barely pay any attention to them, thinking they're a mascot or a weird animal that got loose.

That's an interesting and popular opinion, but you really should listen to the Jim Hill Media podcast I did that explains why the talent at Circle 7 Animation was from head-to-toe as strong as any in the industry. As an example, our Head of Story on TS3, Robert Lence, was Story Supervisor on Pixar's "Toy Story" (and" Bugs Life"). I'll toss in that he also wrote the story for Beauty and the Beast. Circle 7 was populated with talented people who wanted to relocate back to SO-CAL from up north. Roy Conli our TS3 producer won many awards (Oscar nominations) for among other films, Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6, just a few years after we were shut down. Anyway, I think in the years following the Pixar buyout, we saw with our own eyes what Disney was capable of. That takes NOTHING away from Pixar.

Though, the "adults can't see the monsters because they don't believe in them anymore" concept has obviously been scrapped (adults DEFINITELY see Sully at the end of MU, and the MIFTers have to hide from adults in one episode), but Pete Docter, the director of the first two films has said that they have ideas for a third, set a couple decades later, with an adult 'Boo' (her voice actress, Mary Gibbs, is now 24). okay hear me out the monsters inc sequel that I've always wanted to see is the continuation from the original ending where everything is now powered by laughter. this is definitely some time when monsters are using comedy to replace scaring. now the cool part, some of the former scarers chose to not cope to this change so they found a way to infiltrate the company or had some inside people to use the doors to illegally scare. this would feel like fight club except its for scaring (just saw the 4th episode of monsters at work and one of the janitors mentioned fright club, so that's interesting). only then, mike found out when he heard some of the current employees talking about it while dropping the details of when the next meeting would be. so mike rushed to tell sully about it and planned to sneak after hours to see if its true. on the night of the club meeting, they were up on the spot like how we saw them in the prequel, they definitely found some scarers cheering around a spot lit door and coming out of it is randall (this part the writers can find a way to explain how he's back , I'm not creative enough). now they will try to figure out how to get these guys and plan things out. for a second, sully was tempted to try scaring again. he felt some excitement in him and mike noticed. he snaps sully out of it and went back home. from this point, the writers can definitely make sully slowly stray from their vision of using laughs to generate cleaner and stronger energy. make sully blowing off some steam at first, make them fight, really having a go at the psychology of "you can't change the inside of me, this is who I am" for sully (but that would be him oposing to what changed him after boo, so I don't know) but would be so cool to see if the animators can make it work

Actually, it's common for scripts to be exposed and available before going into production. When studios buy screenplays in bidding wars they're distributed all over town. Then once they go into production the lid closes tighter and tighter. In this case the script was literally our first and only draft. Typically, scripts go through dozens of rewrites before and during production...this is particularly true in animation. That said, there was so much bad blood during the buyout that it has precluded anyone at Pixar to seriously consider this project...ever. The company line is, "We never have and never will read anything that came out if Disney's Circle 7." We had to come to grips with that many years ago starting with our Toy Story 3 draft. All part of the history, which can be as fluid as ones imagination...so, you never know. I have a feeling Men at Work will be a very well done show. Bob's Gannaway is a great guy and quite talented. Thanks for the kind words. I couldn't have said it better myself. It was certainly not easy having to leave that one behind. Then to live with the "Pixaren't" insults and no way to defend ourselves by showing what was actually happening inside that studio was tough...especially right after we were shut down and sworn to secrecy. The last good thing I remember being said was by Iger and Dick Cook who we were actually working pretty closely with. Dick Cook was quoted as saying our Monsters, Inc. "Lost In Scaradise" script was the best animated script he'd ever read. I also recently found our Toy Story 3 script from November 2005 (a rewrite of the Jim Hertzfeld draft) and it was shaping up to be pretty damn good as well. Anyway, I appreciate your well thought out comments.

You know what? I'm 31 and I was 11 when the first movie came out. I remember crying at the teather and every other time I watched this movie. Last time I did I was with my girlfirend, probably during christmas or easter end yeah, we both cried a lot. I don't know why, there has to be something that hits me deeply about the relationship between Sullivan and Boo. Now i'm listening to the plot of this cancelled sequel and i'm crying again. It's been 20 years, TWENTY YEARS and i'm still crying over everything this movie and it's sequel supposed to have. Thanks for sharing this with us, I felt like watching a movie that never was, listening to your voice while trying to imagine every single scene. Lost in Scaradise not being made is something I have always been made about. Monsters Inc. has always been one of my favorite Pixar Films and it’s sequel developed on the ideas of the original and more. Really makes me wish the Circle 7 was never shut down or Pixar had continued on with the plans for movies already set in motion. Hopefully Monsters at Work, which is a sequel series debuting on Disney Plus does well enough and maybe can lead to Lost In Scaradise finally being made.

Man Eisner was running Disney into the ground and Iger was like 1,000% better. People expected him just to be a clone of Eisner because he correctly read how egotistical Eisner was and knew he'd get nowhere going against him while Eisner was number one, but he set himself apart his first year by making major decisions Eisner would have hated (and did). I respect few executives, but Iger I really respect.

@@HemmasStudios_ Yeah, as a story full of intrigue and backstabbing drama: for sure! And though Katzenberg gave himself too much credit, one can't deny that his time in charge of animation and the "Disney Renaissance" overlapped 100%, and things quickly devolved when he was booted. Eisner seemed almost to hate Pixar, and they became ascendent just as Disney Animation started to decline. Hell, even if the only good thing Katzenberg ever did (and I don't think he did only one good thing) was hire Howard Ashman, he would still be responsible for a lot of greatness. It's so sad that Howard died at such a young age. He had so much left to give.

Fitting since later this year this show turns 20. And lucky you that you got to interview someone who once worked for Disney. Though the part of the Jersey Devil making a cameo in this film feels odd because if you know the legend and cryptozoology, he technically would've came from the human world first since when born he was at first a normal baby, but then transformed into that monster all because his Mother Leeds cursed out to God from the pain of the 13th pregnancy. Also it's interesting how a bit of the plotlines did get reused for the Disney + TV series, and the dog part was based n the teaser trailer of the original film.
