I watched the whole vod of him constantly losing his mind, raiding village after village, getting the most insane RNG with idols and such while still struggling to find a lightsource or basic progression item. I think it was mostly getting excited about items with a large crafting tree, rather than ones inherently 'rare'. Though for stuff that is used as-is for progression it does make sense, I'm surprised he wasn't excited about the fairly manageable ender eye recipe, but then again I guess he probably never intended to actually finish the game.
