The importance of Turkey to NATO

Ғылым және технология

The long-lived ambition of Turkey to side with the Western world was realized when it joined NATO in February 1952. This achievement, however, had not come with an easy process. After being diplomatically declined for its first two attempts to affiliate with NATO, Turkey was able to join the military alliance only after the dispatch of its troops to assist United States in the 1950 Korean War. Since then, Turkey has been regarded as one of the most valuable members of NATO. The challenges and the changing nature of future geopolitics begs a question, to what extent is actually the influence of Turkey to NATO?
Hello everyone. Welcome back again to another episode of Military TV. In today’s session, we will discuss the importance of Turkey in the world’s biggest military alliance.

    Here is some facts: 1-Turkey asked for Patriot missiles for several years and got rejected each time therefore they turn to Russians for S-400. 2-Turkey asked NATO and USA for assistance at the beginning of the Syrian conflict to avoid and control the Russian boldness in the region, the answer was no. 3-Turkey asked EU, US and NATO to consider them as main proxy-director of policies and military movements on Syria and ISIS, the answer was no. 4-Apart from middle East conflicts Turkey is waiting on EU doors for many years, despite they have a more powerful economy and developed structure then many other EU members the answer was a witch hunt and these are before anyone find Erdoğan as an Authoritarian/Islamist, the most honest answer came from Germany's Merkel who said "EU is an Christian union". 5-There were a ceasefire and peace process with P.K.K terrorist group and they broke it as they looked the Syrian and Iraqi situation as failed states which could result in Kurdistan Independence, Therefore they began terrorist operations all over Turkey for destabilizing the state, all of the attacks are documented in the news which in every single one of them the operators came from Southern borders with Iraq and Syria, and again all of them had logistic support from Y.P.G. 6-The failed coup hurt Turkey so much both humanitarian and economically, that night there were at least 260 innocent casualties which have not priority of mentioning in western medias, the Turks have a pile of evidence and open-court documents which links the Gülen Network to the coup, yet none of the Europeans or US prosecute/extradite the felons. 7-The P.K.K had been listed as terrorist organisations by US and EU, yet they are fully active in these countries and get media coverage often with a picture of their leader Abdullah Öcalan in their hands, you can search pictures of them all over the world including in Syria ,protesting while waving the P.K.K flag and Öcalan's pictures. Now you add that all of the main NATO allies of Turkey are helping them in Syria.

    This video does not even TOUCH the most crucial role of Turkey during the Cold War. Turkey was the main reason which prevented Syria and Greece from becoming Soviet satellite states like their northern neighbors, and prevented the USSR from reaching the warm waters of the Mediterranean. This in turn would have dominoed into Egypt and Ethiopia becoming Soviet satellite states. Syria and Egypt were Soviet allies, and had the Soviet Bloc taken hold of them it would have controlled all trade and fuel movements in the Suez Canal and much of the Near East. It would have also allowed the Soviets to expand its influence into Iraq, Sudan and beyond. Ethiopia was also a Soviet ally. Greece was surrounded by communist states from all sides, including communist Yugoslavia and Albania to its northwest and southwest and Soviet Bulgaria to its northeast. Without Turkey's presence it's likely that Greece itself could have been partitioned by the Soviet, Albanian and Yugoslav blocs, especially since there were longstanding Bulgarian and North Macedonian grievances against Greece due to their ethnic cleansings in Greek Macedonia in the north and northeast of Greece and the ethnic cleansing of Albanians from Epirus in the southwest of Greece. Without Turkey preventing Soviet southward expansion, it would have turned the face of the Cold War. The entire Eastern Mediterranean, the Red Sea and Black Sea would have been lost.

  • @aris121988

    @aris121988

    2 жыл бұрын

    You obviously have no idea and everything you have stated are fake arguments. Turkey played a crucial role during the Cold War, yes, but had nothing to do with preventing other countries from becoming communist regimes. Greece avoided becoming a communist state by fighting the communists during the Greek Civil War (1946 - 1949). "North Macedonia" did not exist, it was a part of Yugoslavia, which by the way was lead by Tito who had not the best relations with the Soviets. No ethnic cleansing of Albanians or "North Macedonians" was ever comitted and this is the kind of propaganda Albanians use to "explain" their alliance with the Nazis and the Italians and their crimes against the Greeks in Epirus during German occupation on the one hand and the "North Macedonians" to "explain" that they are descendants of the ancient Macedons on the other hand! Also, may I remind you that Turkey, a NATO member threatened (and still does) Greece (another NATO member) with war since the 1970s? If even a fraction of what you said was true, Turkey would have an interest of Greece becoming communist. Syria becoming a communist state is laughable. Do you know many Arab countries that became communist states? Seriously, how do you come up with all these fake arguments?

    Your hypothetical assessment is seriously flawed and shows that you lack knowledge of crucial historical events concerning the countries you mentioned. Turkey in fact did absolutely NOTHING that affected or influenced Greece or Syria and their relationship with the West. The stance of Greece was decided by the outcome of the Greek Civil War that was fought between the Greek government army and the military branch of the Communist Party of Greece from 1946 to 1949. The pro-Western Greek government forces eventually won, largely due to increased American aid and Greece joined NATO in 1952, along with Turkey.. As for Syria, since the early 1950s and the rise of the Ba'ath Party, Syria was considered one of the closes allies to the Soviet Union, in opposition to the Western powers. Syria made numerous arms deals and military and economic agreements with the USSR. In 1971, under an agreement with President Hafez al-Assad, the Soviet Union was allowed to open its naval military base in Tartus, giving the Soviet Union a stable presence in the Middle East. Thousands of Syrian military officers and educated professionals studied in Russia during al-Assad's presidency (1971-2000).

    You are a bit naive. Stalin gave Greece to the British sphere of influence in exchange for Romania, and Yugoslavia was 50%-50%, with Tito becoming a fatal enemy of Stalin over time. Greece never had a fear of becoming a Soviet colony, and it couldn't, because as a state with a huge coastline it would inevitably become the free passage for all of the East European dissidents fleeing to Europe, who were otherwise stopped in the land borders by Soviet troops. The Soviet Union would collapse if it controlled any country with a large coastline like Greece, or even Turkey itself.

    Seeing us as a people in Europe is literally within itself. Sometimes they become good friends when they get stuck like that, but from the way things are, they come from players who are much more hostile than our picture. Europe taught only education, education and training in cooperation with Turkey-Ukraine, war was taught. We dropped Russia's war in 2015, Russia couldn't do anything. They bombed 34 of our soldiers in Syria, but then we bombed all their tanks and soldiers in Syria. Europe and America push us in the way of relations with Russia.

    Although not all the facts are narrated, facts and time go hand in hand... NATO might have offered what it had to Türkiye as it did to all its partners and not less but more.. it did cost a lot, too, where Türkiye had to close its aircraft factories established during Atatürk's time and pushed to become an agricultural land but import all technological products from the west.. coups, in-fights, economic hardships, terror, lost lives and lifetimes with imposed outcomes of inserted coups, in-fights, terrorism to bring governments to seek west's so called interests in the form of so-called democracy but actually ultimate hypocrisy.... overall we actually paid a hefty price and still paying;- pkk-ypg-sdf-ypd, daesh, feto, Eastern Mediterranean... you formed a parallel governance structure in the country, feto, to give shape to all government functions to maximize your interests (!), totally disregarding an entire nation and their freewill, ended up in a coup that cost 251 innocent lives and over 2,000 wounded, whereas for one life you get a lifetime in jail and even execution in some countries...don't you? The US, France established daesh crooks so to be able to destabilize the region and so that they could legitimize pkk-ypg-sdf-ypd rebrand-as-you-go crooks in the so-called fight against daesh crooks. Whereas, it was solely the Turkish Armed Forces to clean the region from daesh crooks. France's lafarge even constructed underground structures and tunnels for these daesh crooks... President Trump confessed to establishing daesh... BBC's cameras caught pkk-ypg-sdf-ypd crooks chauffeuring leftover daesh crooks to Afghanistan to create isis-k, where one of these crooks blew up some over 100 Afghans and 13 US servicemen... and you try to make your countries' people believe in the righteousness of this cacophony poor design movie scenario? and on top, we have hosted some 5,000,000 refugees in our lands for 8 years. Have you ever worried about the lives of these people, the ones drowned in the seas trying to escape a war? Are you for real, really? Do you think you have a statesperson's responsibility? Finally, Türkiye has the longest coastline to Eastern Mediterranean and besides Türkiye, Syria. Lebanon. Israel, Palestine. Egypt, Libya as well as Cyprus as an island with two separate people may claim rights per all international and international maritime laws, not only in theory but also in practice as well; - however, not definitely Greece, not definitely France and not definitely the US... Currently, NATO objectives are being tried to be manipulated by some of the member country leaders who serve to the hands of some so called globalists (these guys undermine any kind of innocent term per their dirty agendas) than their people, Biden, Micron to name a few...we are naturally against it but totally for defending our righteous rights inside our country and at our borders including Cyprus, Iraq, Syria, Libya, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea...in understandable, reasonable, ethical and humane manners... we would like peace in the region as all rely on it for their livelihood, and peace can only be righteous and with dignity.. Options: 1- you can continue this cacophony... time will work for us... we are there to defend.. you put yourself in any sort of trouble, we watch...you want our support, then you will have to provide all you haven't provided with our money, free, and of course if we see righteous... 2- you go into war with us. we will hit you so hard... aftermath: consider at least one less class in your power ranking combined with the world is going to see what kind of allies you make.... 3- you come to reasonable terms... - Democratic governance in Libya - Helping Türkiye securing a safe zone in Syria for the refugees under at least Turkiye's guarantee... - Regarding Türkiye's rights in the Eastern Mediterranean as well as all those having coasts as aforementioned as due course.. excludes Greece, France and the US. sure if they wanna participate in a consortium for no more dime than a fair share by international standards. - the world is bigger than five... The UN should also be redesigned/restructured to reflect greater peoples opinion and action around the world...free of any private sector interests and lobby groups... underline this one, even the 'superpower' countries have already internally gotten in trouble because of such groups...this is the most viable option for a world with least certainty and highest level of peacefulness. We ♥️ President Erdoğan as he reflects our free will.. If half of the country leaders were of his traits, resolve and forward thinking, we would not have 10% of the problems we have around the world today....Erdoğan is one of us. I would choose him as my President any day of the week and twice on any Sunday, ♥️🇹🇷♥️.. better worry about your Biden and Micron...

    Every country has its ups and downs. as a Turk I do not like Erdogan but this two-faced attitude to Turkey has to stop over the s-400 systems. The Greeks acquired the s-300 and did not get any backlash at all. We stuck through thick and thin with America through Korea, the cold war, Afghanistan, and even the gulf war. America committed the "hood incident" which has been covered up to a crazy extent to where it can barely be found on the internet here, America has been openly supporting PKK and YPG terrorists on our border for years now, Biden has openly said there needs to be a change in government (which will ruin the country if America touches it; this will handle itself), and even arming The Greek army as well as holding 20,000+ soldiers near our border. What is the reason for these 20K soldiers on our border Biden?

  • @jellymarx9626

    @jellymarx9626

    You are pretty misinformed on some issues, and completely wrong on others. That's some achievement, well done. To the facts now. Greece never acquired the S-300 systems. They were bought by Cyprus to, being an illegally occupied island, justifiably protect itself against Turkish aggression. The Turks were mad at this, and the EU and USA also intervened, not wanting to strengthen Russian significance. So Cyprus decided to send those missile systems to Greece, for safe keeping on Crete, and later sold them to Greece for alternate systems. They are not activated by Greece, as they are not compatible with NATO systems, and as the air force and the remaining air defense system is strong enough. There you are. Some facts to enlighten your ignorance. The reason other countries have soldiers at the borders to Turkey may stem from a justified mistrust. After all, Turkey is involved in one illegal occupation and several wars abroad. So, not a good neighbor.

As fine and nice as Turkey is as country and many of its especially older people in cities are as human beings the Erdogan governing style makes it highly undesirable and unreliable partner to honestly democratic world. But since we know the good sides of Turkey and the Turks we may have patience to wait until Erdogan time is over or that the Turks tehemselves choose somebody else in ovewhelming majority to return the country into secularism and that kind of democracy that with the Turkish history and national "genes" is possible. It will never be really european style of human values and democracy understanding but something acceptable as it was before Erdogan and after WW2. When Turkey began pursuing its own national interests instead of those of the imperialist West, it came to be termed as "rogue state" or "radical Islamist" instantly. This is a classical case of imperialist black propanda. We don't give shit to this nonsense here in Türkiye.

    @@g1u2y345 I'm actually a proponent of Armenian genocide recognition, but again I still fail to see how him saying cringe magically makes him brainwashed by XYZ on this matter. Even a person who is a proponent of the Armenian genocide being accepted generally does cringe when it's shoved into every single conversation possible. That is cringe worthy....... Fact of the matter is there are very few rational people out there these days and you just added another notch into their numbers. Well done.
