The Importance Of IGOR | Tyler's Magnum Opus

Tyler's sixth full length project IGOR, is one of the best break up albums and not comparable to goblin, wolf, cherry bomb, or flower boy.
The album opens with an ambiguous yet menacing introduction. It grips you and throws you into a dark looming distorted symphony of synths... as the drums kick in, Tyler greets you into IGOR. Tyler, The Creator has always been a polarizing figure in the industry. His past has been littered with a myriad of controversies and outright vulgarity. To describe Tyler as another copy and paste hip-hop artist is not only wrong but it is unequivocally moronic.
Wolf marks a major turning point in tyler’s discography and his persona in general. While tyler still holds true to his abrasive over the top offensive demeanor we also see his progression as a producer and he even gets deeply personal in a way we’ve never seen from him before on quite a few of the tracks. Wolf was an undeniably important stepping stone on tyler’s artistic journey and while it’s rough around the edges it features some of his best, most compelling material to date. . In “Cherrybomb” Tyler’s signature sound was drowned out by his countless attempts of experimentation. Although it fell short of many people’s expectations especially in consistency of tone, the album was still perceived as above average. What would follow through, was an album that would change the world’s perception of Tyler The Creator.

I just wanna point out I think it the girlfriend was a current girl and not an ex. It's fairly common for men who are still in hiding (take off the costume it ain't Halloween) to have girlfriends even while they explore their sexuality and it makes more sense if they're together and Tyler is trying to interrupt and get them to break up and have Frank( what I call the boyfriend) be in relationship atleast to me.

4 / 10 i felt like igor was the fictional character who was planning on killing his boyfriend and his ex out of jealousy. Like a fictional, villainous wolf haley/sam character who represents what Tyler feels about his relationship, exaggerated into a character who will act drastically on these feelings

Im pretty sure my theory is closee as every song means something in that way he tells a story Igors theme: He meets someone Earfquake: He realizes he feels something for them I think: He confesses his love Running out of time: Trying to get them New magic wand: He doesn't want them to leave before he can get them A boy is a gun: They do things that hurt him but he doesn't realize it Puppet: He finally realizes whats going on and that he's being used Whats good: He confronts them Gone Gone,Thank you: He begins to lose to interest and thanks them for the time he spent with them I don't love you anymore: He loses all interest because how they treated him and it hurts him Are we still friends: He doesn't want to accept the break up and wants to continue to be in their life Take this with a grain of salt cause i think "Are we still friends" was about his relationship with earl

For puppet I felt like even though his lover is mean and not understanding of Tyler's feelings, Tyler still loves them and its hard to break free and move on. He keeps on going back to them to feel love again. Essentially he was their puppet because he did anything to be loved by them imo.

IGOR is tyler, IGOR is frankenstein sidekick when he was making the monster and tyler thinks his lover's girlfriend is the monster. It is a quite unrequited love between him and tyler. IGOR wanted him to be truthful about what he feel because they had a relationship but the guy thinks it would be safer to keep it that way, to hide the fact that he is gay and choose to love the girl instead which refers to garden shed, puppet and whats good. In the second part of the song he finally realize that he can move on from him and he doesnt want him anymore where kanye west became a father figure to him on puppet and cut off the strings that controls him. The third part of the album IGOR kept telling frankenstein that he doesnt love him anymore and also thanks for the love he experience with him. He pushed himself away as far as from him and by the end of the song he asked him if they are still friends. This makes ppl feel like theyll be stuck in limbo forever, IGOR feel like he will be stuck in limbo forever because he cant picture his life without that person. he cant live on an idea of a waste potential and IGOR made a final solution to the problem. Are we still friends? Its a common idiom people know which typically says when breaking up with someone its more of a formality than anything it is something you say in a moment to ease the pain of leaving someone and you propose a reduction of a relationship but not completely abandoned it. Many of these propose friendships failed to materialize but for Tyler the creator, it is him who wanted to be friends not the person who doesnt want to be with him but love him. Igors intentions may sound pure, there would be an indication that he implies he might still holding for a chance of romance later down the road. he ended the song as if he is letting go and accepting the end even tho he wanted to ask him to be friends with him. Yall remember that one part of a song where his call didnt go through? it comes from a place of desperation. perhapds the wasted potential that crushes one spirit is simply too much to bear. ultimately IGOR wanted to have something rather than nothing. even if its gonna be a cycle for him falling inlove again with frankenstein. The ending doesnt resolve tonally doesnt resolve narratively because in the end, IGOR doesnt win over his love interest. He is destined to be IGOR. and PLOT TWIST, just by asking him to be friends and i already told u he might end up falling inlove again, thats what "EXACTLY WHAT U RUN FROM YOULL END UP CHASING" really means. Its an endless loop.

It’s interesting that you saw Igor as Tyler’s love interest. From the past most of his albums can relate to how Tyler saw himself. He was/is a bastard, he was a goblin, he was wolf, and so on. I know at the end you allude to the fact that Tyler is Igor but I read the album as Tyler is Igor, this new persona that is all about experiencing relationships and love and heart break. Whereas Flower Boy was about accepting. But I like your reading of it. It is so interesting and got me thinking. 10/10 on this. I really enjoyed it.

I also saw that plot twist in the album, a wonderful revelation for sure! I did make the connection between Igor and Frankenstein but I never put the pieces together the way you did. When listening to the album I simply only saw it as the telling of a relationship beginning to end. Perhaps, though, I was only looking at the surface.

Noah - Very true but it’s just retarded that people keep labeling his projects his “magnum opus” when he has displayed that he is an artist who has the ability to innovate creatively. Magnum opus implies that the work is insuperable and is the peak of the artists creativity. Wait until Tyler starts making bad music (not saying he ever will), stops pushing the envelope, or retires, then we can start talking about his magnum opus.

Justine Y - No offense taken. My point still stands. Why would someone label an album as the artist’s magnum opus if the artist has the potential to make a better one? In your case, magnum opus equates to saying “this is (objectively) the best work the artist came out with during their career”. Tyler’s career isn’t over; we don’t know if this is his peak or not.

The true path to growth, self actualization, and being your most authentic self is being able to be honest with your own emotions and be mature (aka accepting them), like the video says. Again, excellent video dude

I prefer the theory that Igor is who Tyler becomes. Tyler falls in love with this person, but either through that person or Tyler's fault, that relationship is toxic and obsessive. Tyler obsesses over them to the point of thinking of killing their current lover. But during puppet Tyler actually confronts the reality that he's simply being used by that person, and realises that their dynamic was toxic. And by the time we reach are we still friends, Tyler is Igor. Igor is the assistant to Doctor Frankenstein in many adaptations of Frankenstein. And that's just what Tyler is to this person. He's not the main character, he's not the focus of this person's life, he's simply their friend, their assistant. Whether the metaphors ends there or maybe you could say Tyler is still under their control as he is their assistant, is up for debate. But that's the theory i choose to believe.

Its an endless loop. atleast he live in the truth that he love him even tho he is gay and the guy couldnt do the same which literally what living and pretend means

Its an endless loop. atleast he live in the truth that he love him even tho he is gay and the guy couldnt do the same which literally what living and pretend means

Yo your editing is crazy but something I would do is if you mention a song (1:58) cut to a clip of it bc u say it’s personal then maybe you could cut to the answer music video when he’s talking ab his dad otherwise the editing and content is top notch 10/10

@@askiamo2 Nah that's just a wrong way of interpreting it. If TPAB has taught me anything its two conflicting yet complimentary things: -Poetry can be interpreted in many ways -Some interpretations are just plain wrong. Its pretentious and misleading to say that an interpretation is correct because it IS an interpretation. That's just not how things work. The song has nothing to do with police brutality and is about the danger in relationships, whether the song is about relationships as a whole being dangerous, or tyler being the dangerous one, that's up to interpretation. Saying its about police brutality is like saying its about the holocaust. I apologize for any brashness that may have come off, Its 4am and im tired as fuck my guy.
