Agree, when someone apologises and expresses regrets for an action like a blackface incident several years ago and promises to do better, at least give her a chance to grow and become a better person (which i hope she's doing), with the witch from down under, she had been doing blackface for years right up until the show and never thought to stop or apologise before the show, imo she is beyond saving

@@jon.callaghan4165 It's really a bit troubling that some fans who already hated Rita seemed to be almost excited when it was re-exposed, like it gave them some legitimate ammunition to send her hate. so many people, especially fans who are black expressed sadness and disappointment, especially black French Canadians, and to have a bunch of people basically jumping at the chance to make memes out of an ultimately hurtful act is pretty messed up. it's disingenuous to use legitimately problematic actions just as fuel to send death threats or stir hate online. what matters is how everyone chooses to move forward and work towards making things better in the future for the people who were actually effected by it.

I feel that, like All Stars 6, this season is the season of redemption, with Anita being the congenial queen of the world and getting to be on a watchable season, Vanity getting her flowers that she was denied on UK3, Ra'Jah and Silky completing their 3 season-long rise to the top of the franchise, Victoria slaying a season with a style of drag she could actually be appreciated for, and Icesis showing that even though you may be the best of them all at the game, your mental health comes first. Big improvement on UKVTW, great video 👍

Rita is very Quebecoise, which in Quebec works wonderfully for her, but outside of Quebec, it seems that the biases and hate towards French Canada backfires on her a bit. it's kind of a trip to see international fans hating on her (and gisele, oceane and lady boom boom) for sometimes struggling with english or calling them tacky or corny for their sense of humour / style. French Canada is a cultural bubble of sorts and there is animosity on both sides, but sending hate is never the answer.

Not mentioning Victoria's advocation and runway for the drag kings was a glaring omission of her impact on this show. That she basically forced the show, long known to completely ignore drag kings throughout its history, to showcase the talent and artistry that goes into a king's look was so fierce. I'll never forget her for that. (And of course it got the Twitter gays in a frenzy for not being drag/art enough, again showcasing some primo misogyny)

I think drag race queens need a union so they can secure health benefits such as mental health services. I also think WOW should have a rule where they cannot ask a queen to compete in a competition until six months after the queens season airs and if they do they have to supply the budget for wardrobe and make-up (which honestly they should give the queens a spending budget for the season. They give money for winning challenges so we know they have money to just throw to them anyway) I say that because it's clear a lot of the queens fear they will miss an opportunity and even when the express concern producers try to convince them to do it anyway. It happened with Ginger and Icesis.

Sadly, no, Rita talking about all the hate she got won't stop toxic fans from being toxic. She's said she won't be competing again on Drag Race because the hate really affected her. It makes me really sad because as a French Canadian I've watched her evolve since her season and she's a great entertainer. Also, I feel like people are happy about Ra'jah winning not because she did the best this season, but because it's a satisfying end to her redemption story arc. Based on track record, Victoria should've won.

Rita will be hosting Drag Race Belgium, and, while she's an odd choice considering Vanessa Van Cartier is from Belgium, I think hosting is the right next move for Rita. She's funny, professional, and a great mentor to younger queens. On Canada Season 1, the producers and judges saw all the qualities that would make her a great host and, I think, that's why they raised her up so much back then. She is a wonderful ambassador of drag.

In the case of Rita Baga, I think the hate she received on her season came from the bad judging. She was doing well, but she didn’t deserve two of the three wins she got. I think that if the judging on her season was good, she would be a fan favorite right now. And, in words of Naysha Lopez, if you hate what happen to the queens on the show, hate the producers. I'm going to be totally honest, I never really connected with Victoria on UK3. I didn't dislike her, I thought she was talented and deserved to be there, but of course her run was super short and it felt more like they were going for the "omg look at the cis girl!!!" angle rather than highlighting her as a person. It almost made me feel guilty as a cis woman myself because I didn't just immediately love her. But this season, she easily became one of my favorites ever. She's so genuinely lovable, charismatic, skilled, thoughtful, and fun to watch. I really appreciate that this season they just let Victoria shine and didn't try to overemphasize her labels. Blessings to every human I’ve seen this year, and every year forward and past. Omg! Maybe a drag/Dickens Christmas story. That would be fun! Thank you for all your hard work on your KZread channel.

I stay OBSESSED with Icesis- not just because I live in El Salvador. She is hands down my favorite queen of all franchises. Her humor, her MAKEUP, her story- it is ALL. To see her step down and take care of herself on this season honestly makes me happier than seeing her win again. This is a message that we need more than ''push yourself to win at all costs.'' That is a story that we NEED on TV and the way the show handled it in a loving and supportive way made my day. Icesis encarna la fuerza salvadoreña

Thank you for taking the time to talk with sensitivity about mental health. As a self-employed person, I can relate to your fear of missing out on opportunities. Drag queens are basically self-employed too, so for most queens they never know when their next paycheck is gonna come. That can create anxiety and a lot of pressure to keep hustling. I'm touched that you want to make a video about mental health in the Drag Race community. Our queens deserve more support and understanding from the fans, and I think you're in a great position to shift the needle in the right direction, even in a small way. ❤️

I have an unpopular opinion but please don't crucify me I'm a black woman with my own perspective. I want representation but asking for more black queens to be cast on shows like drag race Uk ignore the fake that the black population is about 3.3% of Uk. I think more important are things like avoiding type casting, stereotypes, pitting queens of color against each other etc. Hope that makes sense

I was originally one of her many haters, bc I fully bought into the editing. I never really thought about the production pushing that narrative this hard. And also thank you for talking about the race issues in drag race. Often, black queens are pushed to be the loud sassy angry black girl and are still underrrepresented. Lots of love from Germany ❤❤❤ (which will finally be getting its own drag race next year!)

Lovely video! I’m a big fan of your channel and all the discussions of representation on the show. One thing about your discussions of Victoria Scone is that it’s not really true that not a lot of lesbians do drag queen work - I’m a drag king myself and I’d say I know more lesbian drag queens than I do male queens or drag kings. It can appear that not many lesbians or women are queens, but that’s because they’re hardly talked about or shown in mainstream media. It feels like nitpicking but with a community already so cast to the wayside and ignored I think it’s important to acknowledge them! Fabulous video, keep taking care of yourself and I’m so excited to see your videos in 2023!

Thank you Jack for commenting so positively about Victoria Scone calling out misogyny. In support of Victoria’s call, I would like to make two points about misogynist things on RPDR that have upset me as an ardent drag race fan and lesbian. 1. use of the term fishy - whilst some of your commenters believe it is not misogyny because they have not personally experienced the word used against them in that way or they believe it means something else in American history, I can tell you it definitely has been a put down for women for a very long time. The first time I heard it, in the 80s, not in America, I asked the person why they used that word. I was clearly told it was because women’s vaginas smell like fish. So whilst people say that is not the origin of the word and it doesn’t mean that at all, the reality is to a lot of people who use the word and have it used against them, fishy does mean the smell of a women’s vagina and it is used as a put down. 2. the way a few drag queens use breasts disrespectfully. Yara Sofia was one of my favourite queens until All Stars where she wore a massive breast plate with huge pendulous breasts in the talent show. She was punching her breasts and swinging them round and everyone was laughing. Most women with large breasts spend their lives hiding their breasts and coping with life with them and avoiding the constant hassle that comes our way (from men) for having them. We don’t swing them around or punch them. No woman punches their own breasts! It really hurt to watch that scene and while that is the worst example, there have been the other odd drag queen who has punched their breast plate for some kind of attempt to get a laugh. I find it super disrespectful to women to see drag queens punch themselves in their breast to add humour, and it is particularly unpleasant for women with large breasts who yet again see ourselves being mocked and objectified for what nature has given us. This is literally punching down ‘humour’. I am totally fine with queens wearing breast plates otherwise - most treat them like breasts and don’t make them the object of mockery. I find breast punching very misogynistic. I think imbued in the art of drag for many queens is a respect for women. You hear that from many queens how it is their mother, aunty or important female figure in their life who has inspired them. So when drag is used to disrespect women and especially, to mock and disrespect breasts, something very associated with being a woman, I think it negates the spirit of drag.

i completely agree w the point that there's a ton of misogyny in the gay community, and i really enjoyed my introduction to victoria scone, but is fishy really a negative word to the point it shouldn't be used? maybe i'm detached from the negativity bc i see it as a complimentary when gia gunn says like "I'm feeling my fish fantasyyyy" or w/e. and a coochie does smell like fish if you don't wash it! it's just how the body works. if she would've said it's problematic bc not all women have vaginas i would get it more. i've never seen a cis woman as a drag queen so i was happy to have her open my eyes in that way but maybe i need them opened a little more

  • @brycegoddard5547

No, fishy is not a negative word. It came from black American trans women in the ballroom scene as a saying to pass as a cisgendered woman. The play on words with someone’s private parts smelling like fish had nothing to do with it at first, and then became a double-entendre. To me, it’s the same way British people reacted to when Lizzo used “spaz”.

Something I don't think anyone brought up about Rita is that she openly spoke about doing blackface BEFORE Canada season one. She apologized before she became globally famous. It isn't my apology to accept, but there's something venomous about bringing up something a performer didn't attempt to hide and openly condemned.

  • @r.j5344

Doing blackface is one of the most disrespectful things you can do to the black community. Period. And it will be something she has to explain over and over and over again. Some people will accept it. Some people won't. And people who meet her specifically black queens might have reservations about befriending her because of that. (regardless if you apologized). She will never be the victim in this situation. Now if anyone is bullying her for that. Bullying is wrong period! But If people dislike her for it or want to bring it up. It's not your place or problem to try to mute conversation by victimizing Rita for her past behavior. you said it yourself it's not your apology to accept. And it's also not your issue to refute! You using an apology and condemnation as validation of why this topic being brought up is venomous. When an apology and condemnation was the least she could do after mocking an entire culture? Wdym!! No she didn't have to. But to keep her reputation in tact of course she would. What matters is her action's and she will always be under a microscope from p.o.c waiting for a slip up. (Because she's on thin ice). And that's sad that it's reality but it's sadder that she put herself in that position. None of us would have something to watch out for if she didn't act out. (i want to clarify my brother or sister i am not coming for you. I'm just having a dialogue Don't take anything as disrespect or shade and let's talk) I understand your perspective but reality is this hurt people. Blackface goes way back. For example. When slave's were freed. White people would make cartoon like comics. Of black people with giant lip's and etc( playing on stereotypes ) eating watermelons . You can findnthis yourself. Freed slaves made a living off of selling watermelons because they weren't offered jobs, had no education, still was enslaved just not physically and segregated. Then it became white men in black face saying the most racist things you can imagine in plays, performances and etc. This is sensitive and is deeper than the gay community and drag community it's just about humanity brother or sis. That's all. It hurts that after all this time we still have to revisit this. An apology is nothing when you don't know the history of why this was offensive.

@@r.j5344 The person who said it Kimora Amour, said Rita's apology is sincere, but she's going to keep bringing it up to remind her of her actions. She condemned the bullying but said on IG she would keep bringing it up. She said "I'm not.trying to cancel you but" in that same post. Saying "I believe your apology but I'm going to keep publicly blasting you" that is straight up vindictive. This brought the bullying and harassment BACK as it was intended to. I hear you loud and clear, but my issue is with the person that brought it up and the admittance of how they will continue.

It's more understandable for franchises like Thailand or the Netherlands but representation of Black queens and other queens of color should not be an issue on any version hosted by Ru 🤷🏾‍♀️ I need WOW to get it together

I wonder ( speculating here) if she was contractually made to and she thought that she would walk out as her way of letting the Producers know she didn't agree to going back. I'm sure she knew that they wouldn't kick her out before halfway through the competition but probably also knew it was highly unlikely Producers would want the past winner crowned again so probably left before she got a controversial elimination( which I think would've been likely) like a Manilla moment.

I think Victoria is just confused, as the term fish does not make reference to that bad stereotype about odors of the vagina. If it did, sure, the conversation would be so justified. The conversation about not bad mouthing women's parts is important, but let's not applaude a confused approach to the topic just because it is an important one, it does harm more than does good for the cause of correcting problematic aspects of the culture.
