A study recently published in the Journal of the American Heart Association confirms: Elevated blood pressure was effectively reduced after an average of 10 days of fasting, as evidenced by a study of 1610 fasting patients at the Buchinger Wilhelmi Clinic in Überlingen, Germany.
690 subjects in this group had high blood pressure before fasting. Among them 377 people took antihypertensive drugs, the administration of which could in most cases either be stopped or reduced during fasting as blood pressure fell or remained within the normal range.
Since antihypertensive drugs often have serious side effects, long-term fasting could be used as a complementary therapy for high blood pressure.
In 920 people with normal blood pressure, blood pressure was reduced while staying within the normal range. Low blood pressure values showed a tendency to increase. The results of the study were published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in November 2020 under the title “Blood pressure changes in 1610 subjects with and without antihypertensive medication during long-term fasting” by the authors Franziska Grundler, Robin Mesnage, Andreas Michalsen and Françoise Wilhelmi de Toledo.
High blood pressure is an important and widespread risk factor for life-threatening diseases such as heart attack or stroke and is mainly caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Risk factors for high blood pressure include obesity, malnutrition, lack of exercise, stress, smoking, and excessive consumption of salt, sugar or alcohol. According to European medical societies, the threshold above which one speaks of high blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg.
The study proves that long-term fasting according to the Buchinger Wilhelmi programme has a beneficial effect on blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure fell both in patients who were treated with medication and in those who were not. The longer the fasting lasted, the stronger the effect. The positive effects of fasting on blood pressure can be explained by the reduction in weight due to fasting, a reduction in waist circumference and the interruption of salt, alcohol and carbohydrate intake and, if necessary, smoking. Fasting triggers mechanisms that act in a similar way to antihypertensive drugs: it promotes the excretion of sodium, activates the parasympathetic nervous system and causes vasodilation. The improvement in blood pressure continued for four days after the fasting ended. Closer examination showed that long-term fasting effectively lowers blood pressure, especially in people with high body weight, lipid and glucose metabolism disorders and in older people.
Future studies will investigate whether these positive results can be sustained over the medium and long term, which is likely to depend on lifestyle changes.

    Dear Doctor, Two thousand years ago a roman senator had many chronic diseases and was constantly in pain so he decided to end his life by suicide. He decided to fast until he died. But he continued to drink water. After some weeks of fasting he discovered that many of his ailments had disappeared along with his chronic pain. He decided to live again. @@frjasmaa7011 I had the same problem. Even on BP meds my pressure is still pretty high. I was becoming discouraged. Right now I'm trying the LCHF diet (low carb high/healthy fat) which completely eliminates vegetable oils, all grains and legumes, and, of course, all sugar. It's a simple diet, and I'm finding that I feel fine, but will continue for a while before I have my BP checked again. I'll also have blood tests for organ function and cholesterol. This diet is supposed to be great for lowering cholesterol, which is another reason why I'm doing it (just to keep my doctor happy), although I personally have no worries about my cholesterol, as high cholesterol is protective against all-cause mortality 😊😊👍 Clinical trials have shown that the higher your cholesterol the longer you live. Also, the idea pushed by the government guidelines and the medical profession that high cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease, has been shown by properly conducted trials to be completely bogus. (After about 40-50 years!!!!) 😯🤯🤯

    The reason most drs don’t suggest things like fasting is because a large % of the population doesn’t want to make any changes.. they only want to take a pill ,,,not give up their sweet and salty snacks and sodas.. I fast often and the amazing thing is that If I dont eat the first thing for the day I do NOT get hungry but if I only eat a small amount I am starving in no time. That statement she made just before timeline 10:25 "visceral fatty tissue triggers high blood pressure and insulin resistance" that is huge even in and of itself. If fasting can normalise those 2 things by themselves, then it would be worthwhile fasting once or twice a week for that alone, of course after the initial 10 day fasting period. Incidentally several doctors from across different modalities of medical disciplines agree that fasting (without exercising) uses more visceral fat than if you do exercise while fasting. Thanks Dr Wulhelmi.

    THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I just did a 77.5 hour fast a couple weeks ago and was amazed at how well it controlled my blood pressure. I was taking 3 meds for that twice a day. My cardiologist had to have me stop all but one and that one he cut in half! I did drink water and took supplemental electrolytes during my fast and felt great the whole time. I think I could have gone longer but I just missed food, lol. I did goof up on ending my fast though. Members of my keto group warned me to be careful on the refeed for two days. However, since I felt fine, I thought it'd be okay to fudge a little on my food choices. During the late hours of the 1st day I was bad and grazed on a pound of pork rinds. Needless to say I woke up in the morning to discover they had gone right through me! I had morning angina for the first time which continued throughout the next day or so intermittently. I looked at the pork rinds and realized that I had ingested 7,000 mg of salt just with them. Add more salt with the other foods I ate during that time and you can imagine how messed up I got. So, lesson learned. I hope to try another extended fast before the end of this month. You video has inspired me. Thank you for that! My keto doc tells me I must let him know before I do this and my keto cardiologist is too afraid to let me fast for more than 16 hours. LOL. I typically eat during a 18:6 window. I'm tying to do ADF (alternate day fasting) or OMAD as well. I'll have to look and hope you've published a video on refeeding. Thomas DeLauer has a good one. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIB5ua2oeLOqnag.html I'd love to see yours! Again, thank you for your work and publicly publishing your results! PS I'm 64 with severe CVD. I ate keto for 2 years and now eat carnivore for the last 16 months. I've fixed my T2D of over 25 years (worked my way up to U500). Eliminated those meds in 3 weeks. For a short time I had stage 3 CKD with a GFR of 40. I've kept it above 80 for nearly 3 years now. My A1C has stayed at 5.0. My TG:HDL ratio is 1.6 at present. Oh, and I've gone from 518 at my worst to 340 now. Started the keto at 490. I'm ecstatic at the progress and health I've achieved except for the one problem. The CVD. QQ: Does the fasting cause a reduction in the plaque burden in the cardiovascular system? QQ In his 2019 video this doctor says not to fast too long intimating it could be damaging. That is still a 50 pulse point. You want your pulse point to be 40 or less. Look up Doctor David Williams Healthy directions.com He has been talking for years about how important the pulse point is to go by, more than the systolic/diastolic. Believe It or Not 120 over 80 would be better or 130 / 90, would be better than 120 over 70! If you want to read more about Dr. Williams thinking on why the pulse point is the more important reading, then you can get online and look up his information he has been around for decades and decades and is quite brilliant actually. Sincerely Tami💞

  • @bbsaid218

    @bbsaid218

    I did IMF and low carb diet for about a year....but it was the prolonged fast (4 days) that I needed to kickstart the healing process. You can consume fat on your fast, such as butter, ghee, coconut oil, MCT oil and especially olive oil, which has blood pressure lowering properties anyway.Etc..(not processed vegetable oils) these will help cut out hunger cravings...it is carbs and protein that need to be eliminated for as long as possible to reverse insulin resistance. Olive leaf extract (tea) is also very effective. Cut out all processed foods and refined carbs and processed vegetable oils.

    I noticed that when I began to fast for 72 hours my blood pressure clearly dropped then went back up once I ate again. Repeated fasting 72 hours once a week brought it down - high 130s over high 80s to low 130s to low 80s. These measurements were interrupted by one my 2 BP medications becoming unavailable and the new supplied when they arrived being much stronger - needing half the dose for the same effect. Later I began lifting weights and noticed on days I lifted that that my numbers would drop below 120 and well below 80. It then returns to 120s over low 80s. I am lifting weights precisely to lose visceral fat and I suspect if I succeed I will be able to lower my BP medication. That little mention of visceral fat in the video really got my attention!

  • @MM-li8nk

    @MM-li8nk

    Agree, excess visceral fat is NOT good! I retired two years ago, I’ve been moderately active and ideal weight for most of my life. Last two years I’m not moving nearly as much, at a guess probably dropped 80% of activity ( no work = no running around), then Covid hit, I did the couch potato really well. I gained around 10 kgs. My BF% rose a lot! First time ever my blood pressure is up. Two things need to happen - drop weight and get visceral fat back to normal and move EVERY day. Well done on your fasting!

    Fasting speeds up & tighten up one to Self. This is reduction in engagement and involvement externally, leading to auto cleansing to redefine the physiology to more genetic Expression than Epigenetic response. Thus it's Self definition. But, important to note Fasting is multifaceted & food is only a small part of it. That is, there changes in Space & Time dimensions (quantitative and qualitative). Good study certainly helpful in confidence building.

My bp was over the roof at 155/97, my weight had ballooned to 102 kg (im 183cm tall) and i was chronically stressed. I downloaded an IF app and started on the long journey to reduce weight. Within 3 weeks of IF (12/8 advancing to 10/2) combined w regular exercise I dropped 10kg and my bp has been consistently reading below 135/83. During times i am not stressed it consistently read below 118/77 for a whole week (i bought a bp machine and monitor my bp almost hour by hour). The power of IF is AMAZING!. Recently, during a period of intermittent fasting 1-5 days and eating only one meal on the days that I did eat, my BP dropped from the usual 150-160/100 down to around 120/75-80 and a lowest recording of 103/77 while standing and preparing breakfast. I lost 8kg of body weight which was mostly visceral fat from my abdomenal area. I did experience the problem of near fainting on standing. After 1 week of my usual past eating habit of 3 meals, including sugars, my BP this morning has risen to 130/80 but with no experience of fainting. I suspect that if I cut out the sugar and return to 1-2 meals a day with an occasional fast 1-3 days then my BP should remain reasonably static at a healthy level.

    Thank you Karim for your compliments and for sharing your personal story. May I suggest that you always consult a medical doctor when starting with a new intervention like fasting. It is for your own safety. Especially when taking medications it is crucial to do it supervised. I wish you all the best and that you feel happier and healthier soon!

    Fascinating study! I'm more of a holistic psychotherapist and I´m very interested in your methods. - Can you differentiate to what extent the fasting-related therapies (in particular relaxation, meditation, body exercise...) have also supported the impressive reduction in blood pressure?

    I started fasting every Monday and Thursday of every week, keeping my normal vacto/ovo/veg diet. My weight dropped quickly. BP also. Just plan things to do to keep busy on fasting days and reminding yourself that the next day and the day after you can eat anything you want.

    Hello Elizabeth and thank you for your feedback. I am happy to answer your question. First, your organism should be attuned to fasting in a so-called digestive rest day. This involves ingesting approx. 600 calories in the form of fruit and vegetables, mainly carbohydrates with no fat and only very little protein. This is followed by emptying the intestines and then the fasting can begin. We always recommend doing, especially the first fast, medically guided. The length of a fast has to be defined on an individual basis and it depends on many factors, e.g. previous diseases, general state of health, etc. May I suggest you try to find a medical expert experienced in fasting in the area where you live to help you. To undergo therapeutic fasting in our clinics, you should come for a minimum of ten days. That is the time you need for a digestive rest day before you fast, for the fast itself, and for the refeeding phase after breaking your fast. Breaking the fast with 1 apple / apple compote midday and potato soup in the evening. Generally, the diet on the building up days should be a light, ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet high in fibre with more unsaturated fats, less saturated fats. You would structure it like this: 1. build-up day has approx. 3,300 KJ (approx. 800 Kcal) 2. approx. 4,200 KJ (approx. 1,000 Kcal) 3. approx. 5,000 KJ (approx. 1,200 Kcal) 4. approx. 6,700 KJ (approx. 1,600 Kcal). Continue to drink enough between meals. A spontaneous bowel movement should take place on the 3rd or 4th day of the build-up at the latest. Take care!

    Good questions. I like talks where full disclosure is made, when half information is given, despite the appearance of full disclosure, I get concerned. Bottom line most of these places are come on's. Pay $1000's of dollars to be fed water and air, while they watch. There is so much free information out there today, it can all be figured out free. In the comfort of your own home, perhaps with a consultation here and there with a nutritionist.

    When I do fast, it’s an interesting experience. In a good way. Hard to do though while raising a family and they want their French toast. I’m lucky to pull off 36 hours once a month. When I was working and not around home much, I could do 3:days which tended to have better effects. But French toast kids? I’m lost.
