The impact of COVID-19 on poverty and global inequality | DW News

The coronavirus pandemic has also become an inequality pandemic. Never before have we seen such a simultaneous increase in the gulf between the haves and the have-nots around the world.
The virus has exposed, fed off and increased existing inequalities of wealth, gender and race. Hundreds of millions of people are being forced into poverty, while the richest - both individuals and corporations - are getting even richer thanks to soaring stock prices.
The crisis has exposed the inability of our deeply unequal economy to work for all. At the same time it's revealed the vital importance of government action to protect our health and livelihoods.

One of the main causes of poverty and global inequality in the world is political corruption. Many leaders of poor nations are busy getting rich while their people suffer. You have to tackle this problem first.

How about lack of education, low ethics, lack of a strong financial and material base from the start among the population of those poor nations? And those leaders are not aliens, they come out of people. Who will tackle this problem? Sure, if a poor country is colonised by a more developed one and it has an outer control corruption could be reduced for some time. But then again people are losing their independence as a nation and don't learn how to make things good for themselves. And since it is a related question, people choose or don't fight for changin their leader or change one corrupted leader for the similar, it is a complex question which can't be solved with any simple measures.

Can anybody deny that one of the main reason for acute poverty and inequality in Asia and Africa is the West’s exploitation and colonisation? For example, Britain, according to an estimate, has stolen over 40 trillion from India alone, during its colonial years! Poverty and inequality is mainly because of man’s greed and selfishness.

I don't think that capitalism can really be blamed for the inequities in India. After all India fully embraced socialism/communism post independence and only recently liberalised its economy in the post cold war era. Thus India never really experienced the rapid industrialisation and wealth increase that the "Asian tigers" (South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Singapore) did in the post war era. Capitalism is often blamed for wealth inequality even though it has brought more people out of poverty than any other economic system. Socialism only brings misery and destruction.

@@Traveler93 You have no idea how much India has grown in last 10 years. You should compare poverty rate, sanitation coverage, running tap water, education levels, etc from 2011 to 2021. There has been great improvement. Less than 5% people now lack toilets which was more than 50% in 2011, around 60% households have running tap water which was less than 25% in 2011, literacy rate is more than 85% which was 64% in 2011, and per capita income has grown to $ 2,200 from $ 1,200. And it's all because of Capitalism. And you are completely wrong in saying that we liberalized economy in 1991. India even today is one of the most closed economies and people don't accept liberalization immediately. Whatever corporate driven growth India has seen (which is also the real growth in Indian economy) was kicked off only after 2000s that too confined to few major sectors. The present government is highly capitalistic, (still claims to be socialist in order to attract the illiterate rabble voters) and India is also experiencing high growth rates. And seeing in an another way, India is much better economically than it's South Asian neighbors of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, even though I don't see these nations comparable to India, but doing so for reference.

@@palmarum9634 the only communist country that has been remotely successful is Vietnam, and that's only because it embraced a form of market socialism that has more in common with the capitalist Asian Tiger countries than the command economy of the USSR/Soviet bloc. It's still a poor country that hasn't industrialised to the degree that capitalist South Korea and Taiwan have in 60 years.
