I think colonialism in Ghana was a bit different from other countries. The colonialist didn't have as much freedom to do whatever they wanted without some form of resistance from the Ghanaians. It probably explains why we got independence first south of the Sahara. Unlike other countries Ghanaians got educated and were involved in administration of the colony and other aspects of nation building.

its usually because Britain didnt see anything meaningful, except for gold, plus the average Ghanaian is not a fighter/warrior, so Britain had no issue controlling the country, unlike south Africa where the British wanted to be their new home

@@idy1172 hahaha, you’re funny, Ghana has her independence before your country. We fought many wars with the British, even defeated them in some wars. Please go and read the Anglo Ashanti wars... for your information, the average Ghanaian is stronger and physically built than a typical southern African. Moreover, before colonialism, the people of west Africa were the most civilized people in sub Sahara Africa, we had our own university in Timbuktu. The richest man to ever live on this planet was a west African, and his name is mansa musu. So my brother we west Africans were at par with the Europeans when they land in our soil.

The main reason the Europeans were able to colonise this area of West Africa was due to wars between the many Kingdoms. Break aways from larger Empires such as Benin Empire, Songhai Empire who were themselves trying to expand into empires. Also a mistake in your pre-colonial map missed the Ga-Adangbe and Ewe's. Two of the major Kingdoms of the South and South East of current day Ghana. Funny is you were filming in Ga towns but almost ignored their presence. Why is this?

Ask my Ashanti imperialists. Feel happy to be colonised. Thanks God there are still people like my grand dad from the same tribe, who never bought that idea of colonisation and still not going to buy.

What Europeans did was the same as what several non-European powers dd. Do you think Europeans alone had empires and were never themselves on the receiving end of colonialism?They need feel no more shame or embarrassment than other colonialists, and perhaps a good deal less as they left behind major technological advances and infrastructure that benefited the the colonialised. By the way, it's 'You're' not 'your'.

In response to your comment, colonialism was no different in Ghana than it was in any other African country. It's ironic that I've heard so many Africans from different countries express the same sentiments..... for some reason they believe that their country was the only African country to wage resistance against colonialism and their citizens the only one to receive a colonialist education. This is the furthest thing from the truth! Many African countries resisted colonial rule and received a colonial-based education, which by the way was just another way to disempower Africans and further colonial policies and procedures. European colonization was a brutal, authoritarian and oppressive system that was used to control and exploit African people and resources, and no form was better than the other. And, although I learned some things that I didn't know about the structural mechanisms of colonization, this documentary did not do justice to the African perspective on colonialism.
