Presented By:
Dr. Scott Wesley Long, MD., PhD.
Speaker Biography:
Dr. Long received his MD degree in 2007 from The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston TX, where he also earned a PhD in Experimental Pathology. While at UTMB, he was the recipient of a McLaughlin Fellowship for Immunity and Infectious Disease and a Sealy Center for Vaccine Development fellowship. After finishing his doctoral studies, Dr. Long completed a clinical pathology residency at Houston Methodist. Dr. Long joined Houston Methodist Hospital in 2011, and received his faculty appointment at the Weill Cornell Medical College in 2012. He is subspeciality boarded in both Medical Microbiology from the ABMM and Clinical Informatics from the American board of Pathology. He is currently an Associate Professor of Pathology & Genomic Medicine, and Medical Director of Microbiology at Houston Methodist Hospital. Dr. Long’s research centers on functional genomics of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains to identify novel drug targets. He has studied MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and Klebsiella pneumoniae, both of which readily acquire resistance to several different types of antibiotics and are prevalent in the hospital setting. He is currently focused on COVID-19.
Webinar:
The Impact of BD Kiestra™ Total Lab Automation at Houston Methodist Hospital
Webinar Abstract:
An important lesson learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is how critical the microbiology laboratory is to ensuring hospitals have surge testing capabilities. At the same time, an increased focus on antimicrobial resistance and rapid detection of resistant organisms has created a need for faster turnaround times while adding layers of complexity. Bottom line: lab resources are increasingly strained. In addition, with microbiology experts retiring and fewer graduates entering the field, labs have struggled to attract and retain the necessary talent to support their increasing volumes. During this webinar you will learn how total lab automation and change management can help improve your laboratory capacity, impact patient management and deliver on your business case.
