THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF TOMI UNGERER HD 1080p

There are some who find the work of Tomi Ungerer somewhat of an acquired taste. His children's books are rightly admired globally and in Strasbourg there is a museum dedicated to his life and work. But his deliberate pursuit of a reputation for iconoclasm and sexually provocative imagery can be off-putting for many. Sometimes even I feel that way about him, even though I would describe myself as a great admirer of his work. But whatever we do and don't like about this complex creative individual there is no denying his importance in the evolution of 20th century illustration.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tomi Ungerer many years ago in Cork where I live. He was well liked by those who knew him. I found him charming but liable to make surreal observations spontaneously. I've always admired his quirkiness.

I fell in love with Tomi Ungerer's unique quirky vision when I found his 1971 book "I Am Papa Snap and These Are My Favor ite No Such Stories" in a thrift store back in the '70s. Its stories were foolish, funny, heartwarming, absurd, and riotous. Ah, EXCELLENT, you covered it! I didn't know Ungerer did that DR STRANGELOVE poster. You always delight while you inform. Thank you for all your hard work and dogged research!

I thought the illustration style looked familiar, and upon seeing the Dr. Strangelove illustration, it was confirmed. I had also seen a few other of Ungerer's images, and a photo of the cat-shaped school building. Ungerer was quite an interesting artist who was capable of kid friendly and adult natured illustrations. I wonder how well his career would fare in today's social climate. Another fine video, Pete.

Now you're getting into artists I can remember very well from my maturity! Unlike your last subjects, Ungerer is very stylistically consistent. He never gets into a box like Kincade but an Ungerer in any medium is undoubtedly an Ungerer. But he does bring up that pesky question of what (if anything) more than the artwork itself we do (or should) demand of a children's book illustrator. I think a pedophile would (still) be excluded from the field, be he ever so talented, but what happens as we work our way back "in?" Although this is a question that has been asked of others, notably Shel Silverstein and (in his own way) Maurice Sendak. And it does not help that virtually the only book illustration now being produced (aside from "gift" or "ostentation" classics) is for children's books!

Hello again and yours is the kind of comment and observation I used to enjoy with other illustrators and like-minded souls over too many beers. One of the recurring issues that seems to feature with many of the illustrators I have featured is the work versus the dubious and sometimes worse character/lifestyle choices of the person in question. In Ungerer's case I'm sure he couldn't see that there might be a problem. In Europe and especially France he would have just been one of a very large number who had no problem creating kid's work and smutty stuff simultaneously.

Lovely video. I appreciate the challenge you face when displaying vertical artwork on a horizontal screen. You almost want to post TURN YOUR PHONE SIDEWAYS at times, but motion sickness would be a distinct possibility.

Wow. I envy this guy with the amount of success he achieved and his ability to keep it simple. it's as if he knew what he was going to do with his life as a child and didn't see any reason to learn subjects in school that he would never use. It sounds like he didh't really sudy art acedemically that much and although his work apeared somewhat imature when he started out he met with success all along the way. If it were me I would have said to myself you have to be a better artist than that if you're going to make it. Obviously I would have been wrong. Thanks Pete.

Hello and you make some interesting observations in your comment. It seems to me that luck certainly had a hand in his early success, but he was one of several illustrators I really admire for proving that illustration is frequently not about how well you draw or paint in conventional terms. And kids in particular (and adults of a more bohemian disposition) really seem not to care at all. I tried to tell my less talented students this but few could be persuaded and now they work at McDonalds or similar.

Hello again and thanks for the comment. I greatly admire Tgurber's scribbles too, but in his case it was because he couldn't draw, whereas Ungerer frequently chose not to.

Hello again and yes I'm afraid its true - not that I think it ultimately matters I suppose. His images still make me laugh like a drain. The man himself always said this was the case in articles he wrote and it wasn't helped by the fact that in middle age he started losing his sight quite dramatically.

Hello again and I didn't know that and wouldn't have seen much of a connection. But that last book The Fog did have a certain similarity of execution. Or maybe his admiration was more to do with imagination and broad disposition than style, now I think about it.

Its cool that he could do such extreme polar opposites of work and carry on, in the UK weve had two of our major newspaper cartoonistz cancelled, Steve Bell and another guy i cant remember... shows you how intolerant these times are... satirical cartoonists had more freedom in tbe 17th hundreds than now. A warning of what is to come maybe, his books are hard to get in the UK...

Hello and thanks a lot for your comment and insight. I've been censored a few times myself when working in illustration, and it's something that makes my blood pressure leap to unhealthy levels. But it's been a problem for as long as there's been illustration and I don't suppose it's going to stop any time soon.

And again thanks a lot. I think in Ungerers case he was probably quite surprised about the negative reaction to that side of his work and its incompatibility with children's illustration. But in many parts of Europe and particularly in France there were (and probably still are) many who worked in both arenas and nobody was particularly bothered. The USA and Britain are not of the same opinion though.
