Normally, I object to the use of CGI with magic tricks. In this movie, however, it's used to portray the tricks not as they are, but as they're DESCRIBED to be. We're getting this story secondhand, from the POV of a layman. It's not just a set of mechanisms to him, so why should it be portrayed as such? On a side note, because we're seeing Eisnheim the legend, rather than Eisenheim the magician, some of the details of the cgi are actually wrong, I think on purpose. The real orange tree illusion, the tree doesn't actually grow. Leaves appear, and flowers, and oranges, but the tree itself was there from the start. Slowing the orange down, though, is completely realistic, that could've been a real illusion. The little contact juggling thing he does is also possible, but requires a lot of practice to get it right consistently.

Ah,Robert Houdin's classic "Orange Tree" illusion,The oranges are obscured by flaps, which are peeled back when the lever has been pulled. The oranges will appear to slowly bloom from the tree, and the flaps that were previously covering them will slide back into position.Splendid trick !

Although this trick is based off of Houdin's Orange tree trick, the one in the movie is quite unrealistic... but don't take that as a complaint! I actually love how they did it in the movie because it demonstrates the effect of impossibility that swept the minds of the Victorian era audiences. This puts you more in the mind of the movie than of someone from 2006 sitting on a couch.

"the trick of the Orange Tree was made famous by a 19th Century French magician named Robert-Houdin. It was from Robert-Houdin that another magician, Ehrich Weiss, came up with the stage name "Houdini." This trick is first mentioned in old Indian manuscript as an illusion by Faux. Analogical trick was also performed by Pinetti, an 18th Century magician, but instead of oranges, he used lemons. Houdini was the first one to use real fruits." source- wikipedia

The Prestige is very confusing the first time you watch it. But after you get a concept of how the story flows and how it jumps back and forth in time, it's very easy to follow. After making note of all the details, the movie really blows your mind. I've seen both, and I like the Prestige a whole lot better. The Illusionist had mere illusions, while the Prestige had "real" magic.

This was a real magic trick that was performed by a number of magicians, notably Robert-Houdin, who I think invented it. He used an automaton, which was enough to impress audiences more than 100 years ago... Now we need CGI for the same effect.

In the last scene of the movie you see for a brief second a diagram of many machine parts hidden in the table, all feeding up a center pole in the bucket, though that would not look very impressive in real life.

Yes this was a real trick, although in real life it was a machine and not nearly as impressive. There would be a fake tree already there. It would just grow blossoms and the leaves would separate to reveal oranges. Two mechanical butterflies would rise with the handkerchief. Now the trick is not very impressive, but back then it was state of the art. For the movie the orange tree was CGI and grew from a seed, unlike the real orange trees were it would just simply grow blossoms and oranges.

hamelofca - me too, I think it's better than The Prestige. The Prestige is great, but, for me, too murky. But on the other hand, they recall Nikola Tesla there, who's works I'm passionate about ;-). Still, The Illusionist is a beautiful and sooo warm picture. I love it.

@kakurosudoku Robert-Houdin's orange tree illusion does just that, of course, one could manage it with a little more cover, but yeah, this could be more camera trickery than actual illusion being it's a hollywood movie, not a vegas stage show.
