Learning to fly the C42! I was eager to get into the cockpit with my instructor soon after gaining my licence to get some differences training on the brilliant Ikarus C42 aircraft. Which do I prefer? Watch to find out...
Thanks for watching...
Disclaimer: these videos are in no way a substitute for getting yourself training as most safety checks and radio calls are omitted for brevity reasons. I'm learning to fly microlight aircraft at Kemble Flying Club based at Cotswold Airport.

    Excellent coverage of Ben and David with student and instructor patter. Pleasure to see attitude flying emphasis and simple reference for example "top of white arc" speed in the climb out.

    I really enjoyed that Ben. I’ve not been training for months, and probably won’t get a chance again until the new year, but videos like this keep me enthralled. 60 knot climb, 70-ish knot cruise, it’s all coming back to me... glad you enjoyed it too.

    Ben Atkinson may I ask, is that to turn a non GPS devices into GPS capable? I noted in your video that there was a mobile phone on top of the panel (clamped to the vertical tube) with a moving map on it, when in previous videos you seem to be using the iPad, with, IIRC, skydemon on it?

    @@musoseven8218 Skydemon will run on a mobile phone. So used to seeing it as a 'schematic' map I'm not sure if it'll do other modes. Skydemon's website is really helpful 'though.

    Great video again. Yes I had some difficuty in the steep turns to start with as the cowl sight picture is not easy as there is not much in way of a good reference, the best referance for me was the fastener on the cowl for the oil dip stick. Also I found the flap lever was in a odd place but got the hang of it fairly quickly ( I used my left hand as I found the hand swop harder to control pitch as it is, to me, an un-natural movement and tended to roll a bit with pitch). Interesting you found the C42 easier to fly than the Ranger a local pilot found it the other way around (but did say that you needed to use more rudder and trim on the Ranger), I think it is personnel. And yes none of the other stuff happened as it was not on film :-) I am sure it was great.

    Well done Ben , I fly the C42 out of Barton , superb aircraft the 42 , couple of quirks but like wearing a pair of comfy slippers once you get used to it ......pop some wheelies on landing it helps slow it down , and get ready to enjoy nose down high approach's ....brilliant aircraft 👍

    Screw the differences - This works fairly well as a memory jogger after months of staring mournfully at the sky and BoJo&Co announcing extra lockdown. Incredible that some jobsworths were freaking out about a Helicopter pilot flying from Salford to Preston for a butty. 'Won't someone think of all the poor people he could have got too close to' (At several thousand feet). And yeah, we probably do believe you next landing unvideoed was a greaser Ben. Well known fact videoing attracts Kangaroos.

    Nice aeroplane Ben, how did you find the throttle between the legs LOL - I wonder if some folk think it's the joystick? Am I also correct in thinking that some C42s have electric flaps?

  • @pghampton

  • @BenAtkinsonVideos

    Actually - it’s a REALLY good point, I really don’t like the throttle between the legs. Awful !! Your arm gets in the way of a thigh board/knee board and it’s not intuitive. Much nicer to have a plunger style in the dash or like the skyranger, out of the way to the side! Some do, I didn’t think it was too common most are above on the handle!

    pghampton Thanks, interesting, helps with the crossed hands situation I expect? More to - possibly - go wrong, but with German build quality, I should imagine it's a nice feature?

    Ben Atkinson Hi Ben, thanks for the reply, I agree re the throttle. Skyrangers/Swifts, Eurostars have various conventional throttles - more intuitive. The C42s seem roomy, so I'm not sure why they felt the need for that type of throttle arrangement. Aircraft like the Foxbat seem to be more ergonomic too (centre stick or yoke versions). No doubt the C42 is a great little aeroplane (I think that the one you're flying is the 'B' variant?), especially when compared to Eg a 150 series, Cessna, but Comco do seem to like quirks. At least you'll keep warm in winter, learn some more complex systems (lights, fuel pump, transponder etc) and another string to your bow/another aircraft to choose for rental.

  • @BenAtkinsonVideos

    @BenAtkinsonVideos

    4 жыл бұрын

    As KR says, less drafty purely as it’s a factory built aircraft. I’d suggest it’s simpler to fly on the whole - once you get round the slightly odd effect the flaps have on the attitude of the aircraft. This is an 80hp engine the skyranger is a 100hp engine, so there’s certainly less pull there on take off...yet to fly it solo...but the climb out performance is still v good. Most noticeable difference is lack of rudder required....and just how “stiff” the stick feels. No slop at all. Rods not wires I guess. All in all I hugely enjoy both to fly...skyranger slightly more rewarding perhaps - the c42 more practical at times and certainly nice to have the heater.

    @@BenAtkinsonVideos agree the skyranger is far better to fly in regard its feel...... but the C42 is a little larger in the cockpit a little faster... and has the perception of a plane to passengers I much prefer flying the skyranger but I like the room that the C42 gives you....... Flaps in the C42 are a pita..... you need to be working out if you have any speed at all to deploy them..... overall score skyranger 8 out of 10 ...... C42 scrapes a 9 just for the extra room.

  • @BenAtkinsonVideos

    @BenAtkinsonVideos

    I'd agree - I spoke to a chap to rarely uses the flaps on the C42. Hard to compare speed for the two particular aircraft at kemble flying club - skyranger is certainly more draggy - but the 20 extra HP under the bonnet are notcible on climb out definitely. I also thing the C42 would be a better aircraft for a new passenger who might not be quite so sure on the small plane idea. For a microlight - 8.5/10 Skyranger and maybe 9's just for the C42. Very good!

    The pair of you are rabbiting about 'White Arc'. I know the rain's been B awful but you still had me foxed with that statement for a moment. Presume you're refering to the decals on your ASI but can't say I've ever come across anyone using that phrase before, just thing's 'like mind your speed we want 'x' knots and what have we got'?
