I’m 100% Igbo. I love the history of the women I come from. Even the ones that came to the Americas and Carribean. We don’t take shit, we will die fighting for what we believe in, but we are still feminine women. Girl power! I’m so proud to be Igbo! I come from a lineage of queens!!! I don’t know about the feminine part. Most Igbo women i have ever met are very masculine in their attitudes and energy. Most Nigerian women from the south and central regions are, except the Northern Nigerian Muslim ones.

that because traditionaly King / subjects relationship is not what the Igbos are used to; they are more used to Deity/people relationship. There is deity and their priest, and the elders and kinsmen. The Aba riots are just one (albeit prominent) example of Igbo resistance to colonial oppression. There were uprisings by Onitsha market women too!

Just to verify, "Aba riots" is the language applied by British colonialism, to devalue any indigenous act against thier colonial impositions. Thus it is known as the Women's War! Ogu umu nwanyi! .These are films that are needed and should be doing, rather than those shuttle schlocks produced by current Nigerian film makers. The current culture is deplorable!

I am an Igbo man, I confirm what you said and also add that even till date every community still have the dual system of decision making (council/meeting). women meeting still make inputs in common issues in every clan. However the role of the Ada-Ézí (head lady) as called in my own dialect, is now controversial since younger women do not show the deserved respect to the person leading the women in our time.

Even till today. Igbo societies are structured with women having equal say in socio economic matters. The importance of the role of women in governance in traditional societies Igboland cannot be under estimated. It's the political structure that has been over westernized that has left women of today marginalized from participating effectively in politics. But in Igboland, women still have higher representation in politics than in other regions in Nigeria.

I am %100 igbo with my dad from IMO state and mom from Abia state. I loved the video and just wanted to add that the igbo language is 50,000-100,000 years old and I’ve been told by elders before we are close relatives to the Khoisan people you find in the southern region of Africa, which is the original human tribe, we are one of the oldest African tribes which means closest to the first humans that were birthed on the continent

Atkinson, a biologist at the University of Auckland in New Zealand along with Dr. Russell Gray at the same institution, African Studies Center, University of Nigeria, Dr. Acholonu, Professor E. E. Okafor, the Dean of Archaeology at the University of Nigeria all conducted a STUDY finding that the Igbo language was the parent language to many ancient civilizations, meaning they were started, mingled or ruled by people of the Igbo tribe, these languages include Ancient KEMET, Ancient Khoisan people, Ancient Sumerian/Semitic languages, but also they found Igbo words/similarities in Hindu, Indian and Ancient Sanskrit. I mentioned the African languages first because we are from the same continent so more than likely we shared land, and inter married with these people, the same way the Latin language is the parent language for Catalan, Romanian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian, and all those Latin origin languages have tribal indo-European groups that intermarry. One cannot understand Igbo culture without understanding the Osu caste system & the treatment of twins/multiple births, & other “defected” infants within Igbo religion as it relates to dualities, fear & Ala Alusi. Chimamanda Ngozi isn’t perfect, but she is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to her Igbo heritage. If Igbo women traditionally had to combat native misogyny, it would make sense they wouldn’t tolerate foreign misogyny systems either. Very beautiful & strong women. Edit: I forgot to mention that the old traditional religion of the Igbo was called Odinani. Also in my research, most indigenous African religions adored multiple-births & twins. Giving the mothers high status, sometimes whether the infants &/or mother survived or not. With that being said, the Igbo religion is still very fascinating & valuable as philosophical study, & allegorical in-site. The KZread channel the Medicine Shell does a fantastic job of deep diving into the mythology, laws, & beliefs of Odinani. Almost all Igbos are to Christian today, as a result of Odinani’s less-than-stellar application. Some Igbos have converted to denominations of Ifa (worship of Olodumare & the Orishas). Btw.

And man, I don't mind being corrected, but many sources including the Medicine Shell (Igbo youtuber) & Igbo Landing (incident within the Americas related to the Osu caste system) point to this. With that being said no ethnic-group in the world is perfect, religion of our ancestors/or the era before modern-science is a-role-of-dice! Allot of the fears of the Igbo remind me of the Japanese mabiki. And that is without mentioning the amazing parables, philosophy, & fables found within Odinani. And the amazing Igbo artistic technology & architecture. The women riot of 1929 was very ¹pivotal in the agitation for Nigerian independence. In the then Eastern Nigeria, the women riot was widespread, from Aba, to Owerri, Enugu Port Harcourt, Calabar etc, etc. The History of Nigeria agitation against colonial rule would be incomplete without the Women Riot of 1929 and subsequent other riots by Our Dear Mothers of Blessed Past.

Fun fact: Igbos are actually related to some tribes in East Africa especially in Kenya, Uganda, ie the Turkana, Iteso, Jie, Kumam, Toposa, Karamojong, Lango etc. These tribes belong to the same group known as the Ateker. Igbos share similar names and words with these tribes.

People have a misconception of patriarchy, it does not necessarily imply a heavy handed male rule. It really means strong men that protect, provide and guide families, communities and nations. Women were welcomed into the patriarchal Igbo society, this is similar to ancient Egypt. Masculine and feminine are to complement each other not compete or dominate the other.

My African ancestry is now over 400 removed from our homeland but I am African not because I was born in Africa but because Africa was born in me. I think that we, as people of African descent, might want to rethink what it means to be feminine and masculine. We can't let others define those attributes whether in a communal, physical, spiritual or intellectual context. We can no longer allow others to dictate how we as men and women should live in this world and how we interact with eachother.

Most Pre-colonial Igbo societies did not have kings, we were mostly governed by a council of first born sons "Umu Nna." Regardless of the age, all first born males of any family within that village is an automatic member. That son represents and presents his family concerns (if any) at that council were, if need be, the concerns will ve debated upon and then put to vote. The council is led by the oldest living first born son. His vote equals to 1, he holds no power over the council, he only organizes proceedings, and is accorded respect per his age. The Women had their council called "Umu Ada" Some persons are bestowed titles to carry out ceremonial rites. The Nze 'n Ozo are recognized for their immense contribution to society - they hold no power over the people. Once again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you! Daalu rin'ne! 🙌🏾

That is Igbo Akwete clothing. Our mothers made and wore this dresses before colonialism. The pictures are of some of the leaders of the women's war. It's not Akan.

Igbo people are invetors of "democracy". Unlike other civilizations, Igbos believe in individual freedom, moderated by a community commitment. Igbo people do not have "Kings" in the real sense. The equivalence of "King" called "Eze" is not a real king in the Western sense. The "Eze" actually means "master". One who has a mastery in something; Eze-ji, master in growing of ji (yam), Ezeani master in spiritual worship of the earth goddess. The Eze as a clan leader, must lead in consultation with his council. The council is made up of the eldest surviving male of each "Umunna", a clan based on lineage. You can't just get up and give matching orders to Igbo people, no matter who you are.

I love how this history line is detailed. Pre-colonial Igbo land; women have political powers that makes the political organisations a dual gender organisation. Igbo women fighting for their rights to be companions and partners of men in their society because of colonial powers. Interesting, don't we all agree?. That before white man and woman arrived, Igbo women are as valuable and respectable members of the society as Igbo men. It is because of colonial dominance of forcing women into their place behind men, Igbo women now fights for their rights. Doesn't this completely contradicts westernization? That it is white woman who is the forerunner and leader of womanity? It is white woman who is the working woman, the political woman, the useful woman of society. Yet it is this very backwardness of staying behind white man that white men didn't like about these Igbo women and declared a war to push them back were they belong according to him! This is not just a history surrounding Igbo land; the Yorubas, Hausas and the rest of the continent alike all had the same form of societes structures. Women played a very important role in their societies. They were not frequently Queens over their regional lands, but they had powers that men could not even crosspass in many cases. But do we have the right to know this? No, no right to know, because everything is the white woman and her stolen womanity of fakeness. Fake womanity indeed, because this white woman wants to demonstrate herself as the labelled collective "black woman", yet she needs white men in all her affairs for anything to be achieved or completed. While the womanity she wants the credits of without the character or works of, aka black woman's womanity, independently proved her womanity!

Igbo women are branded unruly and independent of the men. That's too bad.

@@jaxthewolf4572 Mary slessor never abolished never came to IGBO land to abolish the killing of twins because it never happened in IGBO land. Read up on her and you will find out. That practise was done by some Ibibio and Efik clans. These were the places slessor spent most of the remainder of her years. One of the things she is remembered for in these areas is the campaign for the abolishment of twins.

@bubulu aye you ever seen a pre human? Crazy people are willing to make comments on something they never seen. I ain't never seen a pre-human and never will because they didn't exist. Second of all you said Pre- human meaning something that is not human anyway. Like I said we were the first humans every where, and I will continue to enforce that statement too. We are indigenous to the planet or should I say first Aboriginal man.

More African Americans should watch your videos instead of appropriating Native American history as black history...smh...this is the part of history that African-Americans should be proud of, instead of appropriating other people's cultures... good job on reaching out and try to teach lost African Americans about their ancient past in Africa.
