Being a big fan of Vlad Vexler and having seen his response. I think this is a very astute connection between the writings and ideals of Ilyin and the reality of the Russian regime today. Obviously we cannot know exactly what is going on within Putins head... but I think this is a great analysis of the current situation.

This means that Russia has to fight Denmark to be able to use it, right? Another strange thing that always bugged me is that Bosphorus doesn't drain into Atlantic/Indian ocean it drains into Mediterrenean sea, which is blocked by Gibraltar on the one hand and Suez on the other. So if Black Sea was an extenetion of Mediterrenean sea, like Aegean (for example) it wouldn't count because world markets are blocked but this time by Suez/Gibraltar?

It’s more similar to blood and soil rhetoric from the Nazis. Land and Sea civilizational distinctions is also Schmittian. But it should be pointed out Schmitt originally got this from Hitler in 1922 from his speech on a German Monroe doctrine according to historian Brendan Simmns. All Schmitt did was expand it to justify Lebensraum and Prussian militarism. In the case of Russia Mongolian/Asiatic authoritarianism and Eurasanism.

@@jurgenparkour9337 to be VERY simple : Carl Schmitt basically said that sacralizing rule of Law is stupid, because laws are made by politicians and/or people in power, AKA by a state. For a state to enforce itself, it needs to be able to change the law however it wants, therefore, *a state is absolute or is not* . Its kinda similar to Hobbs, but it's more focused on the philosophy of law.

Something interesting I’ve noticed about Putin is that he seems very intent on defending the Soviet Union and Stalin while really hating on Lenin. I think that for a lot of the Russian far right that thinks like this, the Soviet Union was not a genuine experiment to construct a just society but simply the continuation of the Russian Empire by other means. It started to make sense to me that Putin sees Lenin as they guy who let himself be corrupted by the West, but Stalin as one of these “great Czars” who reclaimed Bessarabia and Poland, who took the war to the West and who became an absolute ruler of the state. I had never heard of Ilyin but he echoes with Dostoyevsky in the worst ways possible when it comes to this idea. It’s kind of odd how they’re both attached to a civilisational project which is… the lack of a civilisational project. It’s more a fierce attempt to try to preserve a certain character at all costs, and this obsession with that national character is incredibly fascistic. Great video Kraut, I learned a lot from it.

i often think about it. for most of the people that are relatively good, it is hard to not take such words and actions as cartoonish because it seems unrealistic to them. who would do such a thing. ppl often associate with villains to understand their motives. and when ppl try to associate with a true evil, they don't resonate and thus ppl view certain words and actions as unrealistic. but unfortunately genuinely bad ppl exist and often are undermined

As far as ideology who knows exactly what runs through the head of another man? It is entirely possible though that a tyrant who saw himself as the "father" or "shepherd" of His country could comfortably hold this ideology and do all that Putin has done ( murder all his opponents, warmongering and killing innocents, robbing the country blind, not moving them forward as a nation, only moving HIS AGENDA forward and not the country and its people themselves.

The thing with fascism is that it's not really an united ideology as every country's fascists have their own interests, which will almost certainly cause tension between two countries if both countries have fascist leadership. But that's not the case here as Ukraine's current government isn't fascist. The thing is that Russia is clearly overestimating (Possibly on purpose to hide their real goals) the amount of influence Ukrainian fascists have on actual Ukrainian government. And that's why I fear this war might escalate even further if they manage to win in Ukraine as they'll then try to invade yet another country with the excuse "Cause they have fascists"

While it is completely possible that these points and theories are just justifications for Russian geopolitical ambitions, it can't be disregarded that the teaching of these theories, as shown by their vindication in Russian education, feeds and informs the extremist movements and leaders. So it affects global diplomacy and stability.

He really think he is telling the truth. And Kraut provided an explanation (with good citations and references of Putin mentioning of the "philosophers" in each of his speechs) of why Putin and the Russians think this way

I constantly get angry messages by other liberals who do not understand why I, as a liberal, hate Pinochet. The fact that there are so many Pinochet apologists in my political corner truly is one of the big failures of modern democratic liberalism. Pinochet was a fascist piece of shit, he should be reviled, and condemned, and his political legacy ought to be deconstructed and removed from Chilean institutions.

@@Kraut_the_Parrot Really, liberals like Pinochet? I never knew that. Pinochet is absolutely despised by most people here in Sweden. When I learned about Pinochet in school my teachers basically outright called him a violent fascist dictator. We have a lot of Chileans here, a lot of them specifically fled the oppression of the dictatorship so I've never heard anyone say anything positive about his regime.

You mean a text created by the International Bankers. That is why people prefer the Pinochet Constitution. Schmitt understood the fundamental flaws of Liberal Democracy and how it always devolves in to rule by Bankers. In Russia that happened almost immediately, which is why the Russian aversion to to Liberal Democracy is so strong. In much of the West it was a slower, more gradual descent in to hell and so only now are you staring to see the mass discontent with the system starting to boil over in the West.

It's also quite telling on who Putin's favorite past ruler is. You'd think because he's former KGB it'd be a Soviet Premier, but instead its a Tsar and not any of the well known ones in the West like Peter or Catherine, but Alexander III. He has publicly praised his rule as _"a time of national revival, veritable rebirth of Russian art, literature, music, education and science."_ In reality, Alexander was a thug that created a brutal system of secret police to silence anyone who voiced mild discontent with the status quo, cracked down on the educated, as well as harshly oppressed minority cultures and traditions in an attempt to Russify them.

​@@PejmanMan Yup, Alexander II aka "The Liberator" which is quite the ironic title. He proudly claimed that he abolished serfdom in Russia yet instead replaced it with a debt trap which put the populace basically back into serfdom-in-all-but-name. He introduced new capitalistic measures but limited access to them so the lucky few who got in early were allowed to run as corrupt proto-oligarchs unopposed. I definitely think revenge for the murder of his father played some role in III's behavior, but I wonder how much since a lot of his policies in clamping down on liberties were pretty extreme. I guess his mindset was "If this is how people act with freedom then they deserve none."

Why? This video is full of misrepresentations of reality. Neither Gumilev and especially Ilyin are influential in either larger Russian society or russian ruling circles (if you ask a hundred Russians 99 won't know who Ilyin is, 30 will know who Gumilev is, but only because they heard something somewhere about his passionarii concept). It's just Putin who likes Ilyin, that's it. And he's not even into Gumilev. You can't just bring up random obscure Russian philospher of yore and then boldly (otherwise no one will unquestionably believe you) that this is what average Russian believes. This would be misrepresentation. Your friends are going to come out of this understanding less, not more. It's a biased and mangled and ignorant view.

There were a bunch of pieces of information from the video (I've actually heard the name of Carl Schmidt before, no idea on the context) that I'd heard and knew of but having it all come together into a single picture of "WHY" things are the way they are inside of the Kremlin is just mind-boggling. Good video, but as a russian myself I want to bring attention to the fact that this is absolutely NOT what regular russians, not even those that directly support Putin, believe in. This is very much the ideology of Putin and his elite, not of russia as a whole. Russian culture, due to the literal hundreds of years it has been subjected to ideological propaganda, has developed a sort of "immunity" to said propaganda; in the late soviet era, communism by many was viewed as "the thing that you have to say you believe in to get anywhere in life", while during the pre-invasion Putin era most people tried to "stay out of politics" and instead focus on living their own lives, since it was no longer required to swear your loyalty to the state's ideology, and this was very much accepted and encouraged by the state since it meant relative stability and safety for the rulers. Of course, such an attitude is extremely dangerous in itself and essentially negates any attempts at building a democracy, but I just wanted to make it clear that the stereotype of the russian ideological fanatic is very much just that - a stereotype that has had very little relation to reality over the last 60 years. Now, after mobilization was announced, the government is desperately trying to revive at least some sort of ideology in the people, since people who "stay out of politics" don't really want to die for said politics. Right now, there is an expression going around in Russia: "you were not interested in politics until the point where politics became interested in you". Just please, please, please know that we are not lunatics. We are simply people trying to live a normal life in a horrible environment.

Would you consider it possible for Russia to change drastically given the active and persistent disinterest in politics by the general population? So for example if Putin were to fall out of a window due to his failure to achieve victory in Ukraine, could there be some engagement by the population to make things better? Or would the elites elect the next leader that suits their need without opposition by the population? If that is the case and an authoritarian regime is inevitable in the foreseeable future, I see no way the West goes back to appeasement and cooperation any time soon and therefore things won't get better in Russia for at least a generation. The hope that things will blow over for the Russian people and things get back to 2010 would in a way make sure that things will definitely get worse.

In my opinion, the disinterest in politics has developed as a defense mechanism against attempts at indoctrination, and that resistance to indoctrination *could* actually be very beneficial for democracy, but it is key that people participate in politics despite the country's history. After the mobilization, many people see themselves forced to take a stance, and in my experience most of these formerly neutral people now despise the war and the regime. Also, another reason to have hope is that even over the last years before the war the education system was fairly independent from the government, with many young people receiving education much closer to other european countries than the propaganda Putin would have wanted. Of course, now they are trying to shut it all down much more than before, but you can't undo thirty years of progress with seven months of destruction, and much of the younger generation is strongly, if so far not openly, opposed to Putin. Once again, this might just be me inhaling unhealthy amounts of Copium™, but I really do believe that things could improve soon. Putin's regime relied on maintaining stability in exchange for power, and now that that's gone, it could crumble very, very quickly.

the part about being a criminal and a politician was so natural to hear as an Italian I was kinda surprised people struggled to associate the two

I think a lot of it has to do with fear of crime politics, especially in the US but also in a lot of other western democracies. Crime is portrayed by many conservatives as the result of personal evil rather than a systemic societal phenomenon.

Well this surprised me and somehow didn't surprise me at all... The new knowledge you presented to me however DID very much surprise me. Videos with titles such as yours I often avoid because often enough people like to theorise about Russia with their own crazy ideas, references and technicalities. Ultimatley seeing patterns where there are none. This Video of yours however is everything but! You go into detail, dedicated section to the people in question and only refer back to putin when it's factual that he has an opinion or relation to that person. Kraut, by far, you seem like the best history/georaphy/ideology KZreadr I know!

The final words are the best I've heard in a long while. "When someone tells you who they are, it is best for you to listen rather than arrogantly presume the right to interpret who they are for them. Because if you do that, in the end, you will only lie to yourself." Think of how many times either side of the political aisle in western nations assumes someone has ulterior and secret motives. Think of how much distrust there is based on how someone presents themselves or their beliefs. This is why it is so important to not have ambush journalism as much as we do. When we try to get a soundbite that we can create uneasy assumptions about, we doom ourselves into not trusting anyone. For example, I may not support a certain politician, but that doesn't mean that I don't trust them to act in what they think is my best interest. I think a lot of people found this when Bernie did his podcast with Joe Rogan where it wasn't a sensational headline talking about him as a communist or an idiot. He was able to articulately lay out his worldview and the solutions he best saw fit based on the evidence he has been given in his life. Whether you personally agree or disagree with him is not important, but you were able to see him as a man who has positive motivations with grounding in what he believes, rather than assuming that he is just someone who has "never opened an economics book in their life". The same can be true for conservatives as well. If we can help each other articulate what we believe and why, we can dismiss more allegations that people act solely out of stupidity or corruption.

I remember watching Trotsky back in 2018, I rooted for Trotsky at the time, liking the guy who became a shell of his former self because of the brutal actions he had to take to achieve his permanent revolution. The fact that the production team actually wanted me to hate Trotsky yet failing is kind of funny actually.

You speak the truth and its a huge Relief to hear as a german. Its like no one wants to realize whats going on and people Not only get annoyed at this truth but actively talk down people that point it out just because its uncomfortable for many. In this Day and age where a consumer driven society with its short term focus on pleasure and bliss at the cost of rationality i really Look afraid towards the future. That May be because i am from eastern germany where corona Protests with marching music and german flags and people chanting "schließt euch an" or "volksverräter" and so on with more and more russian flags are in fresh memory. Especially since political figueres are more focussed on appeasing those people because they are afraid of Not getting reelected. Rational people seem to be more and more of a minority but this is higly subjective. But seeing this Video givese hope again. I really wonder how Kraut justifies being on the same side as the Azovs.

I am from Georgia, but I speak fluent Russian and constantly monitoring Russian domestic and foreign politics (especially after what they did to us in 2008 and what they are doing to Ukraine from 2014). From my humble point of view, I can say that Kraut conclusion is exactly on the point. Not many people are talking about roots of this phenomenon nowadays, and this video has a very deep analysis. This is one of most underrated and informative (even inspiring) youtube channels I watched in a while. Thank you for you brilliant and hard work, Kraut! I can only hope that someday you will have a video about Georgia on your channel. Best of luck to you!

Hi Kraut. I would like to thank you for this video because it made me understand fascism even better as I was curious on why Putin's Russia is the way it is.

The more I look into political developments the more I see Why Nations Fail is such a fascinating and truthful book. No other method of political dialetics has so succinctly shown why authoritarian states are almost always destined to fail, while inclusive ones, while they may grow slowly, are much more sustainable overall.

Sinclair Lewis said that it's hard to make someone understand something when their salary depends on not understanding it. Merkel and many others (e.g. Bush Jr, even to some extent Obama) didn't want to understand that Russia was rotten because it would have forced them to take positions that would have been harder, lifestyle-wise, with their domestic audiences. If Russia was rotten, then Russian energy was clearly not OK - but Germany wanted cheap Russian energy, so it spun a story of Russian being not quite rotten. This is, in some way, just a variation on Lenin's dictum about capitalists selling the communists the rope used to hang them - immediate pecuniary interest sometimes overwhelms long-term self-interest.

@@cv990a4 You are simplifying and ignoring something very important for the era, that the dominant ideology at the time was neo-liberalism, which now saw itself as the Truth to the point we had reached The End of History. Just like Marx declared Communism the natural development of human society, the neo-liberals believed free trade and deregulations of all markets would inevitably lead to political freedom as well. This mentality also explains why Russia's shift towards market economy became such a traumatic experience. Rather than a controlled transformation, the advisors listened to the the prophet Friedman and decided that the Market would solve everything for the best. Combine that with a culture of institutionalised corruption and the end result could just as well been a failed state.

When the Western European peacekeepers ran away from the Srebrenica safe haven, thereby allowing the Serbs to perpetrate their atrocities, it's not because the peacekeepers thought "hey, neoliberal ideology tells me this is going to be OK because we're at the end of history." They ran away because they were feckless - either at the local or institutional level, they weren't willing to put themselves on the line to prevent what was clearly going to be something bad from happening to people who were fellow Europeans (except not as rich and speaking a weird non-Romance/Germanic language). The only appropriate reaction on the part of the peacekeepers to the Serbs was "the only way you get in here is through us - your move". Instead, they ran away. Given a choice between doing the right thing and the thing that was comfortable for them personally, they picked themselves. Statements like "You are simplifying and ignoring something very important for the era, that the dominant ideology at the time was neo-liberalism, which now saw itself as the Truth to the point we had reached The End of History." If you really believe this is why the Western Europeans were unable to man up and defend their way of life on their own continent, it indicates you've build a conceptual ideological castle in the air, and then moved into it, departing reality. Either that or you've simply never read much history.

It reminds me of a play I read in school once, Biedermann und die Brandstifter (The Fire Raisers) by Max Frisch, in which an arrogant man (Biedermann) allows two *very* suspicious men to stay with him despite reports of arsons in the area, because he's too smart to allow arsonists to burn his house down! In the end, he gives them the match, despite them proclaiming at dinner earlier, "Wir sind Brandstifter/We are the arsonists." It was an allegory for the rise of European fascism, and I thought it was very effective

I can not believe you got through Lev's bit in your normal monotone. I was laughing the whole way through especially after the Mongol astrology thing.

For what it's worth, I expressed outrage that Putin had (essentially) voted himself a 36 year dictatorship, to a Russian. He replied, I believe quite sincerely, "When we have a good, stong leader for Russia, we do not want to change". You can read the whole of Russian history in that sentence.

Excellent video. The appeal at the end is exactly what I've been feeling for so very long about my political contemporaries. I'm fairly sure that I sit somewhere to your left, and the issue of trying to build politics through art and art critique is endemic. Real political projects demand a serious engagement with history, political theory, economics, geopolitics and law. And it always has done. The determination not to do this hard work just leads to broad political illiteracy under the guise of political education. It's worse than actual illiteracy because they think they have an understanding. In a way I think e Ukraine war has been a bit of a wakeup call, and with the rise of China, the threats to our cherished liberal democracy (might) start to be assessed and challenged a little more effectively.

I think it's a little unfair, to be honest. I don't think people missed Russia's emerging fascism because they were too busy engaging with cultural analysis. I think it's cause they just weren't fuckin' paying any attention to Russia! One of the things I've been blown away by when I was looking at this stuff is how obviously and overtly fascist it is, to the point where it can demonstrate hard to explain concepts like the cult of the hero. During Putin's 1 Year Anniversary Block Party, there was a famous Russian anti-war song turned into a patriotic anthem. It's from the perspective of a soldier writing home, asking for luck and hoping he won't die. He didn't want to go to war, but his government decided this was what he was going to do so he had no real choice. The anti-war reading is super clear. So why was it sung during the rally? Because the idea of going to war and dying is heroic in fascism. That's what heroes do, seek glorious death in battle. It's not a tragedy that he was forced to fight and die, it's an inspiring thing that despite his understanding of the dangers ahead, he's still there and going to fight. It can be hard to explain that concept since so much of our understanding of soldiers' deaths in media is through the lens of respect for their suffering and sacrifice. It's sad that they have to do this, it's terrible what they've gone through, we should honor how hard their experiences were. That can feel like turning the troops into heroes and hero worshipping them. But that's not the same as the specific type of hero cult that fascism has, where being ABLE to die for your country is a good thing. It's not about respecting difficult experiences, but rather relishing in the beauty of the ability to become a hero and die. I can't imagine anyone who looks at the political implications of culture missing the obvious fascist propaganda in that Trotsky movie. It's PEZ stuff. I think people missed it cause they never saw it. Nobody thought of Russia as being dangerous anymore. That was old cold war shit, that period of time is over. Even as they became a clearly hostile nation, there wasn't much need to pay close attention to Russian media or Russian culture, we knew about it already; it was soviet era stuff with big statues and workers. This just never got challenged, since a lot of people who might be interested in it don't speak Russian! They couldn't pay attention if they wanted to. All the wild shit that I've become aware of is all new to me, even when it's completely within my sphere. Russia has its own deep-seeded reactionary internet culture. It's got its own 'conspiracy theorists in government' problem. Its propaganda videos look like MAGA twitter did. All this would be of vital interest to the people who view politics through a cultural lens, and they would've picked up pretty quickly on Russia's fascism. They just never learned about any of it until Russia invaded another country and suddenly everyone started paying WAY more attention to them, and all the giant warning signs that we just never looked at became obvious to us.

You don't know how much I am thankful for your work. I've been watching almost every single video you have created and from my perspective only several individuals have actually got so deep in this material. Even some of Russian political opposition Chanels like #МаксимКац and ect haven't seen this problem from this perspective.
