People tend to choose someone from their own nationality who speaks their own language, you aren't going to find huge Anne Hathaway fan clubs in China or India, or just about anywhere where English isn't the dominant language. The eternal conflict: Anne Hathaway is always a reason to watch a movie, while Nicholas Galitzine is a major reason not to
I was surprised by how much I genuinely enjoyed this movie tbh! It's hardly perfect, but it does succeed in a lot of places where movies like this often fall flat on their faces down the stairs. Also like niche experience, but Solene's relationship to the gallery and the art felt very realistic for someone who has actual real world art gallery experience. The experience of falling head over heels for a piece of art you cannot afford is so very real.

You obviously have never read what so called "fans" a.k.a. crazy fangirls write in the comments under photos of their idol with someone Fandom doesn't approve. It's sick & disgusting and I feel so bad for those famous artists. I could never envy them all the fame and money - the price of all that is just too high.
It's my biggest pet peeve when people say the book was fanfiction. like if it isn't published on a fanfiction site using Harry's name, it isn't fanfiction! i appreciate your "technically" i'll take it lol. I've seen people soo confidently say "oh yeah it was published on wattpad" with their whole chest.

I would say it’s still fanfiction, just not wattpad fanfiction. There is a difference. Like all Sherlock interpretations are fanfictions. I would say the Doctor Who reboot is bordering on fanfiction. And The Cursed Child is a Harry Potter fanfiction that was a comercial success.
@katharineeavan9705
25 күн бұрын
It still counts as transformative fiction if it was based off existing works or people, regardless of whether you 'file off the serial numbers' or where it was first published, but that is a distinction most people don't seem to know or care about. I'd agree that if it wasn't originally written with Harry's name, then it isn't technically fanfiction, though where it's published has nothing to do with whether something is fanfiction - original works are posted on AO3 and Wattpadd and fanfic is published and shared in all kinds of places, and was originally published and shared in print even discounting centuries of people handwriting it and sharing it through letters or salons, or composing and sharing it orally.
@arshiyaamreen5808
25 күн бұрын
It definitely was fanfic no matter how much the author tries concealing it. Certain plot points align just too conveniently. Just because the name is changed from Harry to Hayes, doesn't make it less of a fanfic. The author has even used multiple Harry Styles photos as character fancast years ago. The book is definitely a Harry Styles fanfic. The movie, though, is altered to be more based on the trope of 'extremely popular and attractive British boy band lead singer'.
It's crazy how good they made the 5 years later look on him.

16:45 oh god I'm pretty sure the Hayes/Oliver stuff is a reference to the whole Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson thing a lot of their fans are into and many even genuinely believe is or was real at some point. So I can only assume the idea here is that Oliver is firmly in the closet so it wouldn't be Hayes' place to out him by telling her his 'other' biggest secret. I think that's how the irl fans think about it as well, since Styles doesn't label himself and at least half of Tomlinson's fans are queer in some way and his concerts are basically pride parades. ...and yes I low-key hate myself for knowing all of this.

Hehe, no don’t hate yourself, if you knew the Jovi fans including me lol 😂 At least in the direction fandom at some point the slash was kind of real either way the BJ niche fandom which is now small because let’s face it’s an old band do Jon/ Richie slash while we perfectly know they both straight. I do criticize the band and laugh at the band comments sometimes join them lol 😂 but know crazy know a lot of stuff about them amd read their fan fics. The one direction sometimes juvenile fan faction is justified because they are young men and their fandom is pretty young in general with the Jovi fan fic I myself sometimes cringe that they write adults behaving like kids If they do 80s based stories I’m okay with it or even 90s. But I’ve read a story that even though I enjoyed I kind of cringed a little with the behavior of the characters because it was written with the circle tour with the band almost all hitting 50 and I’m like nooo, that behavior doesn’t fit a 50 something guys. Even though it’s a rock band which actually it’s more pop. Bon Jovi is very much like the 1D of the 80s but the guys singing and playing instruments instead of singing and dancing. You could basically say they were the maroon 5 of the 80s, 90s and early 00s.
I had to pause and cackle at "ocean boat employees". Thank you for that gem. Also, I was on the fence about seeing this because I wasn't sure how they were going to handle the relationship. You've talked me into giving it a chance.
People don’t know I’m getting a great lift at the gym while blasting Taste by August Moon
Maybe Phaethon was chosen as a tattoo because of the chaos and ruin he caused upon the earth, believing he could drive the sun chariot. It could represent Hayes and Solene's relationship, believing they could make it work, but eventually having to face the chaos their relationship creates for themselves and Solene's child and ultimately having to strike it down, so none of them would crash and burn. This is all just hypothetical, though. The Four Disgracers are really cool pieces of art. I hope to see them in person one day. Edit: I just realized Solene, although a French name meaning "solemn" or "religious" could also be Spanish in origin, meaning "sun" or "sunlight." So I guess in this whole metaphor or allegory or whatever, perhaps Solene was the sun chariot that Hayes thought he could drive without consequences. I'm thinking way too hard about this.
Being the child of an age-gap marriage (dad born 1939, mom born 1954...my twin sister and I born 1987) I don't see them as odd normally...and when you make the MILF Anne freakin' Hathaway who could still convencingly play a 20 something 😅 All we're left with is a bland romance movie.
I remember reading the book years ago and not caring for it. But I had a feeling my mom might like it, so I recommended it to her and she loved it. We watched it together last week and were giddy with how good the movie adaptation is. They did good on this one.
Is it good or is Anne Hathaway a mind blowingly good actor?

That was the slickest lead up to an ad read I've seen in a while. I don't think I will use skillshare for that particular craft, but other aspects of it intrigue me
I liked the movie, but it definitely has a very different feel to the book. In the book, he's the one who makes a point to follow her to art events, rather than her going on tour with the band. He tries to learn more about art. It's a really important part of her story that her ex-husband never showed an interest in her work, whereas Hayes tries to understand and appreciate her passion. That’s how she moves from seeing their relationship as just a fling, to falling in love with him. He also fucks things up several times by doing things like hauling her out of an important art show, and that highlights their different levels of emotional maturity. I liked the film too, but I think it would be better if they hadn't sacrificed this part of the story. Now we just get "two beautiful people fall in love because reasons". It would've been so easy to just include a little scene where he walks past a piece of art and correctly identifies the artist, to show us (and her) how much effort he's putting in. It's a fun movie, but it's just missing a bit of the depth that would've made it a great movie.
fun(?) fact: the frontal lobe does not finish developing at 25, in fact so far it seems like it never stops developing! it's a common myth that comes from misreporting of a study that expected to find that development ended in the 18-25 age range and so stopped gathering data after 25 but in reality they didn't observe any end in the development process, they just didn't have the means to keep the study going

This tiring shit about what’s problematic and what’s not really takes me out of enjoying anything unless I just don’t interact with other people ever. As long as two people are consenting adults and there’s no abuse, I don’t care. A position where abuse can be easier does not make it abuse or make it abusive inherently. If that was the case we shouldn’t have straight relationships at all, since men are physically stronger than women by average, which makes you in an advantageous position to abuse. It’s silly and I’m tired of hearing about it. Ever single situation or relationship is individual and situational and should only be judged in the context of that specific relationship. Do you see abusive tactics? No? Then shove off. “But what could you possibly have in common?” What would a successful lawyer of the same age and gender have in common with an artist who is in poverty? You can do that with anything, then it becomes arbitrary.

My parents married inter-racially, and I wish people didn't treat it like a red flag/exploitative so I can kinda relate 😕
Amanda I love your videos! Been watching your content for years and now I'm watching in the living room of the house we just bought
the movie elevated from the book when they starts with aged up the male lead, then they can play more with his emational maturity. i'm so so so glad that they removes all the unnecessary side-plot and also love that they get back together in the end after a period of time and hinted that maybe the publics will accept their relationship now (open up conversation on age gap relationship). their chemistry really sold the love story.

Every relationship is different, and there are always nuances, because, at the end of the day, it's two unique people trying to build a common thing.

Depends on the age when they met rather than the age gap itself I think. A 40 year old and a 65 year old? Chill. A 19 year old and a 44 year old? Sus.
I didn't read the book, but based on everything I've heard it makes sense that they didn't get back together. I noticed that at my local bookstore it was shelved in the general fiction area and not in romance, I feel like that tells a lot about where people's expectations should be.
Hmm. I actually want to give this a watch now. I can’t even lie, I assumed it was a pretty basic movie but I was wrong, it’s nothing like what I had thought. Also just so you know, the hiss was warranted.
God I am such a nerd for my hobby. You bring up the post sandwich thing and I am pausing it trying to figure out if that is a crochet top and what kind of yarn it's made of...
I love your shirt in this video.
Omg I'm so early. Love your work ! You make my comfort videos!
I've recently seen some other youtube videos were the youtuber did not like this movie so yours was a relief lol. I wonder if stories about falling for a boy band singer will always be referred to as Harry Styles/1D fanfiction? Maybe that is the case here, maybe not, but I've always had a soft spot for these types of movies. Like Marry Me and that other one I can't think of the name of with Freddy Prince Jr lol. They usually have at least one song I like and it's such a fantasy it's just a fun time. On a side note, I'm looking forward to the inevitable BTS bandmate with American woman fanfic movie that will inevitably come out.
Michael Showalter being involved in this is absolutely breaking my mind
Loved it and loved your response 100% agree
the "okay i’ve had a moment" and her little sigh of relief had me pausing the movie to run laps around my room 🏃♀️
Fun movie for me too :D I am waiting for book. In Poland it will came out at 15th of May.
Amanda, that segue into the sponsor was actually hilarious wtf
I was pleasantly surprised by this one, and glad that a majority of people seem to like it as well. Definitely gonna rewatch at least once.
I feel this is kinda related. There’s a season 2 of MILF Manor. Can’t wait for you to cover it!! New twist this year.
I actually disliked most of the art in the movie so I spent a lot of time distracted by that. I really enjoyed it overall, but it did gave me the ick thinking about real life Harry and what happened with him. Poor guy. Edit: I would full on fight the book ending.
I loved this movie but I'm also divorced for a couple of years and 53. I have seen so so many videos that slam the movie because of the age gap and it's such a young generation thing to me. Obviously is it's a minor it's a crime or some wild young person and someone way way older to where the power structure there is obvious. However what's the big deal. She is older but he isn't a kid in college living in a dorm. It's fictional and he is wealthy and has travelled the world for years so I'm sure while he's young the maturity level Would be pretty different than the average 24 year old. This age gap ordeal is a newer thing. I was barely 18 and was dating a guy who was 26. I also had my own place and wasn't a kid at home going to school. We were married 28 years. I thought the story was great because it focused on her and her finding herself after a shit divorce and trust me I've been hit on by guys in their 20's and no it's not my thing and I have kids who are 30 but listen if it was Harry styles for instance I would be like "kids what kids" 😂 it was good we are older women not dead
I feel like this movie borrowed a bit from The Rebound with Catherine Zeta Jones and Justin Bartha- especially the 5 year fast forward at the end. That movie focused more on the age gap as the problem vs this one where his game is really the obstacle to their relationship. Either way, both good fun in their own ways.
I would leave everything for Anne Hathaway too 🫠
Fantastic ramble
Loved the little Icarus tangent...
Imma be honest, if Anne Hathaway fell in love with me, I would probably act like Hayes, too lmao
Hey y'all. not much of a commenter, just dropping in to say: Hi Amanda, love your vids. So bingeable and light, but still thoughtful. Also, I haven't seen the movie yet, but I cried at the end when I read The Idea of You. This is weird for me. Its only the second novel I've ever cried at (movies get me more easily). Its also weird for me because I don't normally get very invested in fictional couples that are heterosexual. Whatever we want to call it, I thought the novel worked really well. For me anyway. I'd recommend it. I thought it was smart, funny, layered... there were even dashes of existential horror in there which took me by surprise. Kinda broke my heart honestly, all in all. Thanks for coming to my ted talk. 👍😊
Another great video.
Great examination. I did not like the end of the book (major understatement). I felt like it took us on this wild, wonderful, joyous ride only to shove us in front of a bus with the last two sentences. Both made me cry: the book in pain and rage; the movie because of all the emotions. I was overwhelmed, but in a good way by the movie.
I really liked the movie. As a past reader of The Devil Wears Prada fanfiction, I also got an extra kick out of Anne Hathaway being the older person in a May-December romance.
The ending of the original novel is much more realistic. Solene and Hayes break up permanently, though it's implied that she never really gets over him. Author Robinne Lee was reportedly displeased with the change.

I prefer the Hollywood ending because I don't watch a romcom like this to be left feeling sad.

@@thehappyreclusethis. It was also a weird choice to make for a capital r romance novel, which is what it was marketed as. The vast majority of the time capital R romances have a happy ending.... So I was actually pretty upset and HATED the ending of the book. 🤷♀️ I really don't think that it was a realistic ending at all because they both very very clearly were still deeply in love with each other she just gave up and ghosted him. It really seems like they BOTH never got over it... He just eventually stopped texting her because she refused to reply to his texts. It just made me sad and angry and I don't really like feeling that way after reading a romance novel. 🤷♀️ Other people might feel okay feeling those emotions... but it's NOT my cup of tea whatsoever. Romance novels make me happy... that's why I read them. I was happy during the process of reading the book but the ending did not make me happy. Very glad they changed it in the movie.
I actually had fun watching it, but that might be because I read fanfiction

Same. The vibes were a little bit fanfictiony. But my main source of reading is fanfiction so I totally Vibe with it. I felt the same about Red white and royal blue. It had a LOT of fanfiction vibes. But the author has said that it was very intentionally fanfiction vibe-y because they also LOVE fanfiction... So yeah, I'm totally fine with published works feeling like fanfiction... Some people try to use that as an insult but I just don't see it as one. 🤷♀️ Because there are plenty VERY well-written fanfictions out there.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It felt like a classic romcom in a way that a lot of movies lately fail to. Maybe because Anne is a great actress, beautiful and charismatic so it's easy to run with it lol
Ocean Boat Employees is going to be my hit single
That whole One Direction/Harry Styles wave passed me by. All these Rom-Coms & Romance films that apparently feature Harry Styles surrogates are lost on me. Aside from Hayes being British & in a boy band I didn’t know what the similarities were.
Love love love Anne Hathaway but I’m not so sure about the bangs choice
Not a day goes by where I don’t think about Anne Hathaway saying “What a forward young man you are”
your "Ocean boat employees" line killed me! =))))
Anne Hathaway ruined me for all 'just Romance'/Romance Dramas after Love and other drugs... I havent watched a Romance since then unless it had comedy, action or some other gimmick, it affected even my reading choices 😂 bl webtoons have slowly been bringing me back 😅. I thought this was gonna be more fun and comedic... I was wrong.. this was almost Love and other Drugs again 😂😂😂 I was squealing, laughing, sobbing, then broken. I NEEDED THAT ENDING. I wouldnt have recovered if they didnt give me that ending! I loved whY they did with most of it... it was a bit ro artsy at the end there with the lights but i understood why they did it, so its fine. ❤ loved it, will watch again.. in a few years after I recover 🥹
I loved the book but there needs to be a book 2. Because I hate how it ended. In the book they were dating for almost a year, while in the movie they were only dating for a few weeks. It made me sad they didn’t have more happy moments together compared to the book. Another thing they didn’t touch on in the movie, was the tension between Ollie, Hayes and Solene. I know why they didn’t bother, but it’s kinda sad they didn’t
Jup, I won’t lissyen to the aufiobook just based on your review. That’s the power you have.
15:23 OMG I was NOT ready😅
Anne Hathaway saying lines like I'm too old for you and I'm old enough to be your mom is just Hollywood Twilight-Zone territory. Technically, yes, in actual chronological years, sure, okay, fine. But something still seems off. Can't quite put my finger on it. Yeah, no. Wait, yes I can. It's odd because she's Anne MF Hathaway. Helloooo. Did you see her take off the coat to reveal that spray-on dress to remind everybody, Yeah. I'm still Catwoman. Meee-ow. Age isn't a factor in this scenario because, again, helloooo. They cast the human fountain of youth Anne GD Hathaway. But, it's cute how the movie still puts her in Clark Kent glasses and mom jeans so we can all participate in the shared illusion of going through the motions collective lie that she isn't really immortal and a warrior goddess Amazonian from Asgard. Downright adorable. It's like Hathaway getting to cosplay for unwashed commoners day. She's a GD genetic freak of nature and complete utter delight. Anne could rock a fat suit and still raise the tent pole hype to full staff without a half mast to be found. Yeah. Metaphors. Not for amateurs, baby.
